Fic: Zafira's Childcare for the Children of the Magically Gifted
Well, I TRIED to make it light hearted and silly, but I don't think I can really pull it off too well, so we got this, or at least part one of it. Nothing I ever write works out as I imagine it would, but that isn't exactly a bad thing.
Author's Note: This fic came about due to my inability to find any Nanoha/GrimGrimoire crossover fanfics and hanging out in the Exiled to the Couch Community group in AnimeSuki forums. Since there are a few authors who have written for both in there, it seemed like a crime, as i had forgotten about reading deathcurse's fic ChessMaster, since it was only placed in the GrimGrimoire section.
Disclaimer: Cressidor Blan-Virgine and Shuck are creations of Dezopenguin and used with permission, and it is safe to say I don't own the various MGLN series or GrimGrimoire, though I do own a copy of the game.
Zafira's Daycare and babysitting for the Children of the Magically Gifted
Across the myriad universes and dimensions, there is one universal truth, well a few of them. The first is that magically gifted toddlers can be a terrible handful, especially to parents who lack such gifts themselves. Not only that, but finding babysitters for such children is almost impossible. The second truth is that when powerful mages have children, especially the ones who have hero complexes, their children become potential targets and hostages. Being away from them is almost as dangerous, if not more so then taking them into battle. The final universal truth, is that Zafira is surprising good with children, particularly in his wolf form. Once parents get over this fact, they are often the first to agree with this statement.
Today found the childcare building bustling with activity as usual, even in there was only 12 children in the building, less then half of the total clientele. Today, Zafira was giving some of the older children who could sit up on his back rides around the outdoor play area. Giggling with excitement, the 7 year-old girl on his back spoke up, “This is amazing! Maybe I can see my mothers will let me do this with Shuck when he gets big enough!”
“That is something you will have to discuss with your parents Cressidor.” Zafira said to the young girl. Cressidor Blan-Virgine was a blonde haired girl who hailed from medieval era type world that seemed to focus on summoning magic, was a recent addition to the group. Caro had given the Cressidor's parents the spell to reach his childcare building after an incident on their world.
After giving rides to the other children who had their parents permission, Zafira sat back and watched as the children began playing in pairs and small groups. One of his part-time assistants came up and spoke to him while he was watching them, “She reminds me a bit about myself when I was that age, even if our histories are quite different.”
“You noticed it too Vivio?” Vivio Takimachi, the first child he had ever really taken care of, and the child who set him on the path to opening this centre. Hayate didn't quite count, as she had taken care of him and her other Knights just as much as they had taken care of her, but was the one who probably helped him develop his affinity for children. At 14 years of age, the teenager was about six inches shorter then her “adult mode” projected her final height to be, and a smaller bust size which the teen alternated between cursing and being thankful for.
“A young adopted girl with two mothers, one a blonde created through magic by a parent who couldn't love her and a penchant for black clothes, and the other a shockingly powerful magical prodigy who rescued and fell in love with her? You'd have to be blind not to see it when you know about both of us.” The cloned teen said with a smile. “I am just glad she was adopted young enough that she hasn't suffered the hardships Fate-mama, Erio, Caro and I went through as young children.”
Zafira nodded his head in understanding. Like Hayate, all of them had troubled lives before meeting the other two Aces, and that had been a major contributing factor to him having Yuuno research and create a spell any mage regardless of magical school could cast to reach the safe haven he had built in a pocket dimension to protect these children.
“Honestly, I have a feeling that my mama's and hers would have a lot to talk about if we could get all four of them in the same room together. But with me being almost done school, I think my mama's might begin working more, so we'll have to do it soon.” Vivio says, thinking about her hard work to graduate so she could work full-time helping others like her parents, even if that help came from looking up information.
It was a few months later that Zafira in human form would come face to face with his greatest challenge. Cressidor's parents, Lillet Blan and Amoretta Virgine had just shown with an urgent request. “Zafira, something important has come up on our world, and neither of us will be around to look after Cressidor for several weeks or even months. While we trust Gaff, he has to manage our entire staff and arrange for urgent matters to be delegated to other Royal Magicians in my absense, so he will have little time to properly keep an eye on my daughter and her pet. We were hoping that you could look after her and Shuck while we were away, as the few magicians on our planet that have experience with Barghests are rather busy with their own work for Her Majesty.” Lillet tells the Guardian of the Tome.
Speaking up, Amoretta adds, “Since the issue in question involves a demonic weapon, Lillet needs my assistance in detecting, drawing out, and destroying the weapon depending on the strength of the devil who forged or inhabits it, which we will determine once it is found. While Shuck is house broken, he still isn't fully trained yet, and is rather unruly when Cressidor is not around him, as he is rather attached to our little girl, and her to him. We will understand if you are unable to help us in this matter, but we hope for the best.”
Zafira took a little bit of time to think this over before responding. “I do not know the exact methods of how children are educated on your world, but as long as this won't impede her education, I can look after her. It won't be the first or last time I've had to look after some children overnight for several days, though this will beat the record.”
“Thank you. We will try to get back as soon as possible, but...” Lillet began to say, before Zafira cut her off.
“I know how these things go. My family and I, as well as our friends have all been deployed to hunt down criminals and ancient magical relics by our own government. We Guardians could alternate who stayed behind with Hayate while the others went on missions, and her friends were around often and of comparable power to ourselves, and their parents always willing to lend a hand when she was still learning to reuse her legs.” Zafira said, hoping to waylay some of the women's insecurities.
“There is one thing I would like to know though. Do you happen to have any advise, or special instructions on how I should deal with Cressidor's pet Barghast? Maybe a booklet or pamphlet of some sort?” The Guardian of the Tome of the Night Sky asked.
After several hours spent making the preparations needed within the building to ensure the safety of the building, as well as informing Zafira of all pertinent information regarding Shuck, Cressidor's mothers left to prepare for their journey. By this time, Cressidor had been put to bed by her mothers and Shuck was sleeping on the bed with her, and since her parents didn't seem to mind, Zafira saw no reason to change that, and went to sleep on his own bed in wolf form.
Questions, comments and suggestions are all welcome.
These are just some ideas for events that happen while Cressidor and Shuck are briefly living with Zafira.
Ever since the moment the other children learned of the Barghest, the children wanted to ride Zafira and Shuck to race each other, an idea that Zafira shot down repeatedly due to the dangers involved. Eventually one of the older children pointed out that while it would be clearly dangerous for them to race with children on their backs, that didn't mean they couldn't race unmounted.
Unfortunately for Zafira, Vita was around at this time and heard this. She got some holographic emitters installed the next day and spent that day designing a course and obstacles for them to race through. Hayate even got a limiter installed on Zafira to prevent him from flying to make the race fair. After being assured by Cressidor that Shuck understood what to do, the race began.
AN: Going to either need some time to actually write out the race itself, or come up with a way to make it a comical noodle incident.
Zafira was quite glad he was an Ice-spell user when they all learned that Shuck was allergic to Garyu, as it took an hour after Lucetia left for Shuck to stop expelling flames as he sneezed.
The group of remnants of the Archmage's army that attacked the childcare centre never knew what hit them. What they expected was to find a bunch of children and a few adults hiding in a magically hidden school of some sort that didn't have any runes and only a handful of familiars. What they found was pain and humiliation.
They never expected that the blue wolf could cast magic that bound them almost as soon as the attack began, or that the strangely named and dressed girl, Miura Rinaldi would proceed to kick their existing summons into oblivion before moving on to them. One of them would later tell the woman sent to collect them, one-time reluctant agent of the Archmage Margarita Surprise, that the most surprising part of it was when the wolf turned into a man and the girl called him Master, but the judge at their sentencing suspected that the man was hallucinating at that time due to his injuries.
This idea spawned when I thought about what would happen if Cressidor got exposed to the Magical Girl genre, and as I was writing it, that last line came to me, and I couldn't resist using it.
One Day After Cressidor Was Returned to Her Mothers
Zafira was afraid of very few things. Among those were something happening to Hayate or the rest of his family, something happening to the children he was protecting, and angry mothers. Unfortunately for Zafira, he was facing two of the latter, and it wasn't even his fault! The blond woman who appeared to be in her mid to late 20's spoke first, "I understand that there are significant cultural difference between our worlds, and that Cressidor would be exposed to them through interacting with the children here, but exposing her something like that? What were you thinking?"
"I am very sorry about all this. I was sick and called my master, Hayate to find me some extra help a few days ago. I never expected her to come herself, or that she would utilize a child's interest in playing dress up to get them interested in cosplay, though perhaps I should have. Thankfully she didn't bring any of her more risque costumes with her, though most children wouldn't be big enough for them anyway." Zafira said while bowing his head in human form.
"Oh, we aren't upset about that, we actually find it kind of cute." Amoretta tells him.
Confused, Zafira asks, "If you weren't upset about that, then what is it that you are upset about?"
"It's about one of your technological advancements that she was exposed to. Something involving moving pictures, either ones that are so realistic you would swear you were watching at a theatre, or the ones that are coloured drawings that move." Lillet explains.
"Oh, that would be television and movies. One of the children suggested we watch some when the weather was particularly bad. I hadn't realized the kind of effect it would have on Cressidor, she she did not grow up on a world with the technology for it. While Hayate's world isn't as technologically advanced as this one, it is centuries more advanced then the one you inhabit. I apologize for not thinking about that." Zafira tells them, having not thought of the consequences of exposing the young girl to such a common thing in his world.
"Oh, that isn't quite it. Once we explained that such things are currently impossible in our world, but that Lillet would at least look into the possibility of finding a way to magically animate stories for her, Cressidor was satisfied. No, what we have a problem with is something called the 'Magical Girl Genre' of such an entertainment method." Amoretta tells him.
"Oh... would hat be the Classical interpretation or the more Modern one that you have a problem with?" Zafira asks, remembering some of the ludicrous things in the anime and manga Hayate had shown them when she first learned of magic.
"The one's where the girl's start off hopelessly incompetent and wins more by luck then skill, until their love for a boy gives them what they need to mature enough be able to what needs to be done." Lillet tells him, clearly not enjoying the kind of message that sends to children.
"That would Classical then. Thankfully, that is mostly just from Hayate's home world, and is nearly an abandoned sub-genre, mainly remaining only in parody form. Most of Mid-Childa's are of the more Modern style, usually loosely based on historical or folklore figures. The Saint Church tends to frown upon anyone trying to make a series about the Sankt Kaiser being like that, given how she was a powerful fighter and magic user who gave her life to end a civil war that had been going on for centuries." Zafira says, hoping to calm any fears the women had that this was a common culturally accepted notion.
"That is very good to hear. I am glad that such an advanced society doesn't have such horrible ideas as the basis for their culture. There is one more thing I would like you to explain to me." Lillet says, making Zafira feel relief, at least until she said, "Can you explain to me what 'Befriending' means here, are why the word seems to terrify my daughter?"
