You know the drill. Spoilers will be included.
This being the first set I've looked at since Alara Reborn has resulted in quite a bit of confusion on my part. To me, "When Devout Lightcaster enters the battlefield, exile target black permanent" sounded like a combat ability. Exile was rather obviously related to removal, but the term "battlefield" sounds more like something involving, well,
, not the playing field as a whole. If there's anyone else still around, am I alone with that problem?
Also, why did they make a functionally "weaker" Wrath of God? It isn't exactly
to regenerate creatures(hello abuse), and this basically means that someone can have
4CMC "Destroy all creatures" cards in white. I don't really see the motivation to make Day of Judgment instead of simply reprinting Wrath of God.
I don't know why they didn't reprint WoG (Best guess is because they were tired of the name? Yeah, its tough trying to figure out what Wotc thinks when they do stuff like this, since a lot of times, it seems like they don't think
), but the reprint in Zendikar was probably to give control the tools they thought it needed to stay competitive in the new meta game.
And one can only play eight Wrath effects in extended (1.X) or the Eternal formats, Vintage and Legacy (1 and 1.5 respectively). Most of the time its not wise to run so many cards that do the same thing, the only real reason to run Wrath and Day of Judgment in the same deck is because you use Gifts Ungiven as well.
I hope this answered your question.
