I don't know why many of my subscribers on YouTube say Madoka is "flat" or "bland," consider 1)it is a magical girl show that has dark tones compared to previous ones and 2)the animation is top notch. I don't know much about the storyline itself having not finished past episode 5 due to computer problems and never picking it back up; but I know it is deep. From what I understand so far, all the girls are tricked into their magical powers. None of them with the exception of Madoka had a choice. At least, that is what I understand. & the main villain is either the white dog/pet or the revolving island later on. All I know is that I might finish it later on.

Some of it may be hype backlash. The show is pretty much put on a pedestal as the epitome of modern anime in some quarters.
Although frankly I'm not a huge fan of the series myself. Madoka is in some ways similar to Mai-HiME, which is one of my favorite series, but I got far more attached to the characters in HiME than the ones in Madoka, which may partly explain why I found HiME to have a strong emotional impact while I found Madoka rather grinding/warying to watch at times.
Then again I haven't have the greatest success with Gen Urobochi's stuff in general. Darkness and despair can be effective when used in moderation, but the way he uses it kind of has a tendency to (figuratively speaking) make me roll my eyes.
My top favorite show of 2011 was actually a WTF comedy called
Ben-To.
