Whether real-life women are insufferable is a different issue (and one I'm not going to delve into

), anime generally try to portray them as some sort of idealized figures. A lot of times, it doesn't work because of the disconnect between what the show is trying to tell us about them, and one's personal reaction to them. Hatsukoi, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have any trouble portraying most of them as outright horrid people, and I find that a refreshing change of pace. It also makes it easy to forgive some of that shows greater faults.
As for Hikaru no Go not being a sports anime, I challenge you to find a sports anime where the characters are more passionate/obsessed or where the actions are examined with so much attention. Next, you'll be telling me that Darts and Poker and Billiards aren't sports

.
Oh, by the way, I like the work you did with the characters in the Sengoku Basara thread - did you know about the history behind them beforehand, or did you just look all of that up after watching the show? I'm also a bit undecided about the portrayal of the battles in the future. While stuff like Nagashino are absolutely fascinating, and there are tons of innovative ways to portray it, the anime's style doesn't seem to be very suited to any of them - unless Nobunaga guns down the entire Takeda army himself or something like that. Then again, I'm not sure how the show is going to handle having the characters die off one by one.
