I'm almost caught back up on Tokyo Ravens - I just finished watching Episode 15 about 30 minutes ago.

Yeah, it's been really great the last few episodes. I'm glad they moved on from the comedy blackmailing they had going on for awhile there. The more serious episodes in this are truly great, and the action scenes are just wondrous.

Well if you're short on time the good news is this: check the runtime of these shows , these past few years have seen a revival of the 5-15 min format but it was actually around for a while around the turn of the century, here's another example (which I found interesting because while today there's plenty of gags where the girl will hit the guy for no real good reason, here she does have valid reasons, makes me wonder if there was an evolution). Or another one
One of the most iconic shows that used the 15 minute format was Galaxy Angels, there's a few things I find quite interesting: first of all it was successful back in the day and had 4 seasons but is really forgotten today (#1462 on MAL's popularity ranking) , you hardly see it suggested to people who came into anime after it aired unlike say azumanga daioh (#105 on MAL).
But what I really find interesting about it is this trivia from TV tropes

    TL;DR…

Sorry; dynamic content not loaded. Reload?

I've seen a lot of people call cute girls doing cute things shows "harems without the male lead" and this one literally is! Though Galaxy Angels is more wacky girls doing wacky things.

I'm not sure if this is helping you any,I'm just rambling

I think your best bet is using the anidb calendar to look at the lineup of a season and pretend it's the upcoming season and pick a show like you would today, here's spring 2000 for example.

I do want to make a recommendation though as a "moe historian", I'd love to have your opinion on Key:the metal idol , it's gonna turn 20 soon and while it's not a household name it was critically acclaimed at the time and I think Key was kind of a "Rei clone" before Rei even existed.

And lastly as a bonus this wonderfull quote from the end of this ANN editorial from 2003 about azumanga daioh:

    Quote:
I'd honestly be surprised if it picks up a new wave of anime fans. Shows focused on humour like Kodocha may do that, but not something so culturally focused like AzuDai.

I lold at your discussions with totoum regarding that youtube channel .

As I mentioned to him, that youtube channeler goes to film school and originally (and still does) started off with tech reviews.

Fair enough, the "pretentious" part to me came more the visual presentation , looks like he's got a dlsr and a mini steadicam, makes his vid look a lot more pro than a lot of anime youtubers out there.

I'm afraid I can't give you any advice though, see I work in video editing and the video production industry tends to be pretty loose so there's no real issue when I mention anime. When I've done more corporate work the people working for the company sort of just brush off any "eccentricities" (like anime) as this being normal because I'm a "creative".

I recently checked out Nisekoi's first episode because I recall you bringing it up awhile ago. I do love the SHAFT style, and the interactions between the male and female lead are relatively fresh and edgy (in the sense of them being combative with each other, but it not being straightforward tsundere-esque material).

However, the Yazuka "Arranged Marriage" element is a bit off-putting to me. For one thing, it was painfully predictable that it would be her. There's also how relationships that grow out of two people literally being forced together (and/or through blackmail) isn't an idea I'm fond of. Not sure yet if I'll be able to work around this issue.

I watched the first ep of Inari Konkon. It was vibrant and pleasant to watch though I'll have to see what direction it takes. Hopefully it won't just rely on the "sugary" cutesy nature but actually develops its premise nicely to back it up.

I didn't forget about what you ask, and thus far I can't find people who really checked that closely GT and OC.

However, a JP contact did confirm what I already suspected and researched: NagiAsu initial impressions were mixed mainly due to Hikari's initial personality and the dynamics between the kids being too obvious (as in, a chaotic romance train).
To supplement that, things are quite obvious when it picked interest of people if you look at that graph:

The ranking of Vol 2~5 literally skyrocketed within few hours on 10th january, due to ep14. As you can see, they were all stuck within 4 digits, then jumped to 3xx in the rankings.

Things went much better around the latter part of the first half and so on.
That said, as usually, a better midway/ending will not change the sales in a spectacular fashion if a lot of people dropped it from the get go. That said, it also shows that otaku does have a "wait and see attitude" without necessiraly forsaking something that doesn't match their expectations within 2 episodes.

In general, that proves you better wait for the last volume to be released before treating a series "selling well/bombing", considering the curve isn't always linear.

Not sure if I can have the same kind of data with OC and GT. That said, regarding GT, I did see a lot of complains regarding Koko which might lead to the same kind of response from the JP audience.
