They have a very simple story- it's not the best I'll admit, but then they never claim to be.

Ninja Theory's creative director on the other hand, says he wants to write a story that could stand along side the best that film and literature has to offer- that's not word for word but it's pretty close to what he had actually said.

So is it somehow wrong that gamers criticize the story now?
Well I did say it's not good to make claims/promises and then not being able to follow through with it. I don't know anything about the game's story other than a quick summary that it relates to the media's negative influence on the world. Whether it's good or not is something I can't accurately judge. I can only go from what I've heard about it.

I was actually neutral on Platinum Games in the beginning; I had only played one game from them which was Vanquish.

Great gameplay, but horrendous B-grade story Hopefully their experience working with Kojima would help them pick up some pointers in that department to make at least serviceable B-grade stories
Since you like the original DMC's so much, I'd figure you'd have followed Platinum Games closely since it's comprised of the core staff who worked on Devil May Cry before their original studio closed down and they were laid-off by Capcom.

In fact Bayonetta could be considered the spiritual successor to Devil May Cry since the gameplay is very similar and refined, not to mention the themes of the game largely revolve around the Divine Comedy, only with a hot witch as your protagonist instead.

I know about Vanquish, the only reason I didn't play it is because it sort of succumbed to shooter generic-ness. That and I heard the plot is some uninspired sci-fi expy of the Cold War.

From what I've heard the first 4 DMC games didn't have a particularly stellar plot either, but I suppose it's better than one that's full of absolute hypocrisy then this recent one is.

Ah well. Despite it all, it's good that we still have Platinum Games to turn to for quality hack n' slash games. First Bayonetta and now Metal Gear Rising.~ (I'm hoping Bayonetta 2 turns out great as well.)

Yeah. One shouldn't make promises if they aren't going to follow through with it.

Well the music is a subjective thing. I haven't heard any from the new DmC game, but I do like electronica and dubstep a lot of the time.

The setting is in limbo, so interestingly surrealistic environments are a given. Not to mention one of the boss fights in particular I found very visually impressive.

Well in one of the videos of the guy you linked me to, apparently the writers for their two previous games (Heavenly Sword and Enslaved) weren't actually employees of Ninja Theory. DmC is the first game they've done a story for without an outside writer.

Well, taking into account all of the information you've shared and a positive review of the game by an independent internet personality I looked at, I can come to the conclusion that even though how Capcom and Ninja Theory acted towards those who felt disappointed by the game was completely unacceptable, DmC does actually kind of look like a pretty good game in some aspects. Again, keep in mind I never played any DMC games before. (But I have played hack n' slash before.)

There are some things about it that seem like a downgrade like the style points being too easy to accumulate, lack of a lock-on, guns having no real use, limiting certain weapons to defeat certain enemies and just some downright bad glitches that Ninja Theory didn't bother fixing. I can see why folk are not impressed and don't consider the game DMC quality. Not to mention the plot is incredibly hypocritical and the characterization is horrible.

Now on the OTHER hand, a lot of the visual style of the game from what I saw I actually really liked. Not to mention the combos were really flashy and still a joy to see in action. I have to agree with the sentiment that in general the game isn't all bad, it's just really not up to par with the set DMC standards.

I still don't plan on buying or playing the game myself, but despite all I mentioned above, it still managed to impress me in some aspects.~
