Thing is, curls are such a specific exercise. Presses usually train a whole group of muscles together including the biceps. Its why they say do pullup to do more chinups, same idea. What my friend suggested to me was to do these kind of full-body exercises before going onto specifics like abs or biceps so as to get as much effect as possible.

Honestly, after gymming for awhile, I don't really find curls to be very effective. Shoulder presses or even laying down and doing weight presses seem to get more of an effect outta me. Of course, that's just my opinion, since my friend always makes it a point to do a couple of sets everytime we go, says it's good for him.

Also, might want to try squats with the benchpress weights instead of dumbbells, but both should do fine?
