Wow, blackface? Really? I made a joke about Uchuu Kyoudai and the whole Buddy the Gorilla fiasco in the RC podcast, "I guess minstrels weren't available." Little did I know...

I was thinking of the "I like that character's personality" sense but to be honest I'm interested in your answers to both.
I'm basically thinking characters that have graduated high school but 18+ is pretty close.

Yeah, I would say that's pretty early-on - that would be the equivalent of episode 2 or 3 of the anime. But I think that reflects the reality of the demographic differences between manga and anime in 2013. The studio probably figured if they introduced the males too early, half their intended audience would drop the show.

I feel the urge to ask a few of you guys some questions as a thought exercise.
    1) Adult female characters that appeal to you. Immortal options are allowed but you have to give some non-immortal ones as well (because I want to get answers other than just Horo and Matsuri).
    2) Characters you'd like to see an older version of.
    3) Male characters in EF you like or dislike.

I'll probably post my own answers at some point but it might be a few days due to various stuff I have going on.

Would it make a difference if male characters were involved in 3/4 of the series instead of half? In a vacuum, sure - though I suppose it would depend on how (and how much) they were involved.

Yes, I certainly agree there's a difference between a show like this and K-On, though for me it still boils down to a matter of degree. LL seems to at least acknowledge the existence of males, and even incorporates them into the plot eventually (from what you tell me). I suppose I might ask why, if that kind of comic misunderstanding is an important part of the equation, you'd wait until there were only six episodes left to even introduce them.

As for the mangaka being female, that's certainly a positive. It doesn't solve the larger problem with anime having almost no series of this nature told from the male perspective, but it's not the job of one series to do that. If every show is going to be about the female experience, it's better that a couple are written by people who actually have female experience.

I would say I tend to have a tolerance for jerkass characters if they're the right kind - I immediately thought of Mitsudomoe by the same director/writer when you mentioned it, as it's one of my faves. It depends on the scenario, the specifics, the balance... My initial reaction here is "Why am I watching a series about a bunch of people I don't like?" Maybe I just didn't get to know them well enough.

It seems clear to me that I haven't seen enough of LL to make a definitive conclusion, but also that my initial response to it was quite different from yours. It appears that for me the differences from what I see as a very played-out formula are somewhat semantic and a question of degree (instead of ignoring males we get supporting ones when the series is half over; instead of pretending they don't exist we openly acknowledge that they do, but that they might as well be aliens), where you see them as dramatic and fundamental.

I won't deny that my irritation with the industry in general could be influencing the way I view this show. Why is it that we never, ever get a show that takes this sort of look at guys in their own habitat and how they view girls in a semi-serious way - only shows like Free and KtB where they effectively act as genderless swap-outs for cliche female characters? I can't shake the impression that I've seen LL many times - a male writer and director's perspective on the teenaged girl experience - and that this is just a tweak - whereas you look at LL and see something that's not a tweak but a fundamental reimagining of formula and completely original. That's the disconnect, ultimately, between us on this show I think - but I've only seen a couple of eps and you the entire thing.

Well bear in mind, I didn't watch the entire thing. But first off, we have a scenario where the premise of the series seems more or less built around girls getting together to commiserate and bond with light yuri overtones (sorry, but they are there) in a universe where guys might as well be on another planet. I get that this is the point, to some extent, or at least I think it is - that girls are clueless about guys to the point of comedy. But haven't we seen this basic premise about a thousand times? It seems like an unintentional symbol of the way males have become virtually extinct in romantic comedy, apart from the odd harem series and hideous freakshows like Oreimo and Papa Kiki.

Not to put too fine a point on it - and I know it could never happen - but this sort of show would be really interesting if it were a bunch of boys getting together to commiserate about how little they understand about girls. Now that would be something different and original - Love Lab I feel as if I've seen in its basic form many times over. It does have a spark of wit to it, I confess - with Ohta directing I think that's inevitable. But even if the execution is relatively fresh the premise feels very tired to me. I mean, I think it's ironic (perhaps again, intentionally) that for most of the series the only guy is a body pillow. And from what I see, when a couple of males are introduced (like the brother) they seem to be physical and metaphorical punching bags more than anything else.

And then... Maybe this is just me, but do you really find Riko a good MC? TBH I don't think she's an especially likeable person - she's kind of a jerk, really, and not in an endearing way. At least for me. I don't really find any of the cast all that likeable from I've seen - apart perhaps from Maki, who did prompt a few laughs from me in the couple of eps I watched.

Perhaps if I sat down and watched all 8 episodes, it might grow on me like a virus and I'd pick up the wavelength it's operating on the way I'm intended to, and it would connect with me on some genius, meta level as a show that satirizes and enlightens rather than seeming to be part of the problem instead.

I didn't think there was any way to slowly but surely that series - it's the best at episode cliffhangers I've ever seen. For me it would have been like eating one french fry a day. I marathoned the whole thing in about a month.

As for Love Lab, I did give it a try... You know, I feel as if maybe I'm not seeing the same things you're seeing. It's not bad or anything, but it played for me like an unintentional illustration of what's wrong with anime at the moment, and I found it more sad than funny for that reason. I'm sure there's a level it's operating on that isn't connecting with me, but that's how I felt watching it.

This is just an aside, but did you notice that the Love Lab OP is a blatant ripoff of the Minami-ke S1 OP?
