I'm not asking for Mary Sues, lol. I'd rather see characters who are people rather than stereotypes.

Yeah, I've seen Blue Drop. Most of the lesbian characters are depraved rapist aliens... so uh, not sure that's a good positive example.

I did manage to finish watching Shin Sekai Yori, though. The story was interesting, especially underneath all the pseudo-religious philosophical handwringing nonsense. I think had the author ditched most of the hipster crap it probably would have read/watched a lot better.

I still stand by my original opinion, though--the author of the original novel (and the screenwriters for the anime itself) seem to use homosexuality as an allegory for childhood, immaturity and childishness, to be discarded upon becoming an adult.

That's... not very positive. In fact, it's more reinforcing the current Japanese cultural view of homosexuality. "It's a phase" or "it's playing at love" or "it's practice for adult (heteronormative) relationships."

I swear, sometimes I may bash on America really badly, but when I realize things like this, I think to myself that I really don't have it too bad here. At least crazy right-wing nutjobs waving their "God Hates Fags" signs are easy to ignore.

Thanks! I've downloaded the images, so you can delete them from your imgur account.

I'll work on them after waking up and although they will be avatar-sized in the end, I was planning to delete them after reviewing them. However, I can (and will) upload them for you to see.

I actually wrote most of the rant that I posted in the Valvrave thread to your wall, but then removed it because I was worried about bringing the series down for you! I guess we're similar types.

I really don't mean to get into show-bashing or dwelling negatively on a show because it can ruin the experience that the show has to offer. One bad episode shouldn't bring the rest of the show down. My mounting negativity has more to do with the direction that the show feels like it's taking. We're headed into "kid power" territory in a Lord of the Flies manner. Maybe we're just too old to appreciate that

Another disappointing factor of this episode was character development. More specifically, the lack of character development. I don't mean character growth, but having the audience learn more about the characters. I didn't feel like I gained a better feel for any of the characters. If anything, it was disappointing to see them acting like a bunch of dumb kids. (Once more, maybe we're just too old to appreciate this...) Saki's character also became a bit unreadable to me. She always seemed somewhat withdrawn, perhaps a bit moody and shy. It was clear that she harbored feelings for Haruto, but she seemed aware of what was going on between Haruto and Shoko. Her sudden aggressiveness at the end of episode 5 seemed very out of place. Point #4 of your post makes Saki's behavior in this episode a bit easier to handle, though. It certainly is curious that she bit one of the other students, so who knows what we'll find in her past regarding the Valvraves?

The show can redeem itself, but I don't know... I can't speculate about too many possibilities that I like the sound of at this point. Too much speculation just sets up expectations to be disappointed over, too. The show still has a lot of potential, I hope it gets there!

By the way, have you started Suisei no Gargantia? I have to admit that some of my displeasure with Valvrave may have to do with Gargantia. Gargantia is also a sci-fi series, although it's pretty clear early on that the show is more about people and interactions than the sci-fi aspects. I was really enjoying Valvrave, but I'm wondering if watching Gargantia made Valvrave's characters seem a bit dull by comparison, as Gargantia's cast is pretty incredible. It's been a really long time since I watched more than two shows at once, let alone two shows with overlapping genres; I'd forgotten that one show could outshine another. (I still have hope for Valvrave, though!)
