I like WIXOSS quite a bit. It was the first of the currently-airing series that I picked up and I admit that I didn't have high expectations of it, but it might be my favorite of what I'm following. The darker aspects of the series seemingly came out of nowhere, and I'm still intrigued by what the secret behind WIXOSS is. The characters are enjoyable enough to watch. There's an interesting commentary to be made about people in general from it. It's not the case with Hitomi, but with Aki and Yuzuki it seems as if they are losing what little they actually have of their wish even as they struggle in WIXOSS to attain it. People lose things when they become obsessive.

The other series I'm watching are Black Bullet, Knights of Sidonia, Mahouka, Captain Earth, One Week Friends, Escha and Logy, Brynhildr in the Darkness, and Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii. I could drop a few of those and not mind... are you following any of them?

I like the fantasy genre quite a bit. I have a harder time stating whether or not I like romance. I like a good love story, but so many "romance" anime series are either harem-based romantic comedies or "dating route"-adapted series. I can still appreciate them, but when they're the primary focus of the series then I find myself getting bored. An example of that is Outbreak Company, if you've seen it. It had fantasy elements and brought up some interesting ethical and philosophical issues, but it also had "dating route"-style elements. I liked it all in the beginning, but it began to feel as if the series was focusing on the "dating route" aspects more than the fantasy storyline. I felt let down by the end of it.

Speaking of weather, we didn't really have a spring here. Just last week it was still getting pretty cold, but yesterday the temperature went over 90˚F. We're already experiencing evening thunderstorms, which is more typical of summer. I guess we just dove from winter to summer.

I told you that you could always message and/or email me to bring me back And I certainly wouldn't mind it if you did - I've been wondering how you've been. I've also been wondering if you've been watching any of the current shows. I actually started watching nine actively-airing series - I don't think I've followed that many active series since high school. Specifically, I was wondering if you were watching selector infected WIXOSS, which some have been hailing as "the next Madoka." I wouldn't go so far as to label it that, as it isn't quite as profound (yet, anyway), but that made me wonder if you were following along, too.

PM or email whenever you have the time, I'd love to hear how you're doing!

I wonder how the heck we got back to the school system discussion in the Mahouka thread. Seems like there is even more disagreement than I thought, though a part of it seems to stem from people who are plain and simply dissatisfied with the way the author wrote the first arc of the story and the world building. Well, I'm tired of going on and on about that so I'm out of that loop.

I think that highlighting your actual concerns there was a good call... the discussion really did need some refocusing IMO.

Gochuumen wa Usagi Desu Ka? is a wonderful show. At least if you're into the moe-moe slice of life comedu schtick it's aiming for.

Interesting! I've generally gone with a slightly different theory as to why things like SAO are popular, although if and in how far that applies to Mahouka remains to be seen- although I really hope not, because it is something I strongly dislike. Mahouka seems to be a show that may turn out to surprise though, so I'm genuinely curious how things turn out.

    Spoiler for Text:

Sorry if my thoughts seem to be a bit disorganised, I'm in the middle of preparing for finals, so my brain tends to be somewhat all over the place these days

Last Sinner beat me to it about why Brynhildr is compared to Elfen Lied... I'll just add this is one reason I'm expecting it to have more substance than it's let on so far.

Wixoss was actually the first new show I watched, and I'm afraid I wasn't quite as positive on the first episode as you. The dread and foreboding was too unsubtle for my taste. This wasn't like Madoka where Kyuubey wasn't up front with the girls and seduced them with the old justice, frills and sweets pitch - I kept wondering what was wrong with the protagonist that she's gung ho about a game so obviously creepy. I think it's going to take the show staking something on her victory to really get me involved.

I did finally get around to samplying Akuma no Riddle and enjoyed it immensely. I'm not normally nearly as big a yuri fan as you, but Tokako and Haru are exactly the kind of "hard and soft" yuri ship that's my favourite (remember, I used to ship Kanbaru and Nadeko!) and it looks like it's going to essentially be them facing off with a bunch of batshit nuts girls in an over the top fashion. Glorious.

I also saw Hitsugi no Chaika today, and like Black Bullet I have to say it's a solid if hardly mind blowing entry into this season's action show pool. One downside: Chaika'smanner of speaking is a double edged sword, it's cute but also makes her come across as rather dumb.

The main point of frustration for me this week was Irregular at High School Magic. That first episode was slow, bland and cut out a key scene from the start of the manga. The sister has a magic battle and utterly owns face. It's crucial in establishing a sense of equality between the two siblings and that the sister isn't just a mere brother-lover. But within a few minutes, I could tell those adapting this title are keen on cutting her down and making the brother look superior from the get go. Not to mention removing the shounen/action aspect, which was essential in keeping things interesting in the manga amidst the info dumps. I expected a few adaptations to go wrong, but this was one I thought they wouldn't botch. Guess I was wrong, but better wrong about this than other titles I'm sticking with.

Your instincts were right. This adaptation is going right for the fetishes and the tropes. A real shame.

R3, for the record, the reason people compared Brynhildr to Elfen Lied is because they have the same author in their original manga form.
