If she never faced any backlash she would have won last year, instead of this year .

Oh yeah, I forgot KanaHana...yeah, there's a major advantage right there...

Um, not in general. I don't have a clue how ASM works. I did consider that to be a factor in how K-ON appealed as well as well as some other characters. But yeah, there's far more people out there who understand moe more than me. There's only so far I want to delve into it. I'm more of a writing angle person than an aesthetics/director person.

I didn't exactly like or not like Kanade. She's a character I feel somewhat neutral on overall in that some parts of her are nice and can be sympathised with but that she is overly simple. She just feels like too many characters I've seen before.

Well, I guess I should apologise to you about one thing though. That drought I had left me stranded late in S1 of Marimite so you rocketed through it. I think I'll recommence it soon. I was definitely not in the frame of mind to wach it in the last few weeks. And yet that ended up leaving me finally able to watch Cowboy Bebop.

I wouldn't consider Rajura, Kona, Pocari and the like to be sensitive and panderable. Also know some ex-voters IRL and they aren't that type of anime fan either. Some people vote for what they think is cute, some people vote for what moves them the most or was most different. I'm sure a significant proportion of ISML voters - probably a majority - fit that description mentioned. But there are those who look at it all more objectively.

In the general sense of being inoffensive, yes Kanade is and I said that in early 2010 but I got shouted down by the general populace of ISML then when I said Kanade would be dominant in the next few years. People still don't want to concede that one to me. The other funny thing is earlier this year, I decided to predict Kuroneko to win ISML this year. Amazingly, despite what happened in the regular season, she's now in the final four. For someone like myself who is quite resistant to the moe glut overall and only indulges in the odd title out of them all, I find it ironic I can predict stuff like that.

Don't take it personally. I'm just not into ISML anymore and tired of the raging surrounding current shows. I'm having more fun than I've had in a long time watching older shows. Hope nothing I said in that PM to various people including yourself offended you, either.

Edit: Perhaps to make things clear, part of the whole deal in Angel Beats for me was that Yuri and Asami were my major reasons for watching it. Yuri had a very dark past and copped a lot of things a person should bever had to. Yet she was able to be the reliable person to lead people in purgatory. The instant comparisons of Yuri to Haruhi were unfair - okay, they somewhat look the characters are becoming more homogenous over time, so why be picky on that one? And their personalities were so different yet that comparison never relented. Yuri ended being more of a plot character and written out of the running for Otonashi quickly. It was always scripted to be Kanade's right to win over Otonashi. Asami burning bright in such a brief time made her very appealing, but one impact episode and she's gone - to be replaced by Yui who gets far more chances to impact people with a completely opposite package. I think that AB's one cour length left it at a point it was virtually dictating to people who they were supposed to like. But I can't really speak for other people that much.

I actually second Kona, R3. The fact that she is tailored to be inoffensive to the more sensitive and panderable otaku can make her offensive for being so submissive and light. So yeah, I'm with Kona.

Kanade is a thoroughly inoffensive character
I am sorry I have to disagree, you should know of all people of my hate of her being overly bland . And not to mention I actually hated for other reasons for most of the time ABs was airing.

Yeah, I knew it would definitely catch your attention.

I made an exception "Only For Today" because Kanade finally, finally won! As I'm also a big Kanade fan, I felt that last year's injustice by assassination has at last been corrected. It just felt right to lend her my spotlight for once.

Yes, I will be switching back to a Sayaka forum set for Halloween. I don't know if you saw/remember it, but I used to have a non-Sayaka avatar and signature a long time ago.

Even shows specifically yuri-genre don't take a realistic approach. We've got no hope at all when it comes to shows outside that narrow focus.

And yeah, I think you might be right about the "teasing" thing. I think it's probably cultural. Japan loves subtext and indirectness about as much as America loves being loud, obnoxious, opinionated and over-the-top.

Lesbian relationships are one of those touchy subjects in Japan because they don't want to acknowledge that a woman could actually be happy with another woman, as opposed to being a baby factory for the all-important husband. The "Class S friendship" horseshit seems to be built entirely around this fear--they want to keep thinking of lesbianism as a phase, something that girls get over when they become adults.

They're just "playing at love." It's just "practice" so they know how to be a good little wifey for their (inevitable) future husbands.

Ugh, the whole thing just makes me want to punch kittens.

Well, I never expected you to take your sig literally. But you have to give PA props. It was like they knew we were talking about power rangers.

Anyhow, glad to know that Triple R Video Productions is still around since I'm aware you're busy atm.

I'd also like to tell you that I am watching Nana with Demi. and while being a good show itself, I can't shake the shoujo-ai vibes the show is sending. Okay, the show is NOT that, but I'm sure you may have the same goggles that I have at times. I'm telling you this simply because we probably thought you'd react similarly to us to certain scenes.

This series really sparkles. It would make Okada jealous.

Excellent. Your post also reminded me just where I first saw it. Silly me...
