So I was looking over the past few years of Anime Saimoe (Japan) results:
    2008: Hiiragi Kagami
    2009: Aisaka Taiga
    2010: Azusa Nakano

Furthermore if you look at this year's AST results, Kuroneko was one of the most popular non-Madoka characters, and Shana and Nagi (Hayate) came extremely close to winning in 2006 and 2007.

    Some observations:
    1) Otaku really seem to like petite tsundere girls
    2) There's probably some truth to my theory that Shana is one of the most influential moe characters ever.
    3) Despite all of the characters mentioned falling under the petite tsundere category, there's actually some variety among those picks - Azusa, Kagami, and Kuroneko strike me as quite different from both Kugamiya group and each other.

Well the big thing with Madoka Magica versus Fate/Zero and Guilty Crown is that in the formers case it wasn't the main character that was the underdeveloped one early on (we knew from the very first episode, arguably the first half of the first episode what drives Madoka as a character and where her strengths and weaknesses were and then they proceeded to build on it through her experiences with the rest of the cast with each passing episode), just a side character that only became really important towards the end at which point they told all and brought her to the forefront quite nicely. In Fate/Zero and Guilty Crowns case you'd expect the two main characters and their antagonists to carry the show, but in actuality it's completely unexpected supporting and third tier characters that are holding things up right now as the main characters struggle to showcase what drives them and where their personalities centers. It's bizarre....

With Fate/Zero I always hear a voice in the back of my head trying to tell me stuff, but it's more a loud hyped up fan type of voice shouting at me that it's the best show of the season and there must be something wrong with me if I can't find it to be perfection defined. Not so much this week, but moreso the previous few.

It didn't help I'd just finished watching Infinite Stratos ep1 then. It was okay - I know it's medium-grade material at best, that service, cliches and tropes are coming. But...the nationalistic rhetoric in that episode was disgusting. The way Ichika and Cecilia were pitted against each other seemed merely to use Cecilia as a tool for otaku to take a swipe at Westerners. The amount of nationalism in anime ticks me off. So it goes both ways.

China is hardly a country with morals. Blatantly ignoring copyright laws, environmental disgrace, human rights disgrace, a fairly disposable system for anyone that's medium-class citizen or lower. But it's not like other countries in the world haven't done those things either. I don't have much respect for China but I have enough sense to respect they're a powerful nation and disrespecting them is foolhardy and a way for the East to stir up more anti-West sentiment. And I have enough sense to distinguish the difference between a cruel government and people that have to make do since they can't change the system, similar to America suffering under Bush Jr - didn't take that as an excuse to take a swipe at Americans.

Yeah, my life until I hit university sucked. The eternal scapegoat at school for skin colour and high marks. The target of violence of a sociopathic father who hated the fact I wasn't a typical male and almost killed me. I could very easily have hated the world and done something evil. But what's hate going to achieve and what legacy would it leave behind? I'd rather do some good in the world, try and promote understand/appreciation of others/difference and prevent evil being inflicted on others. It's a major reason why I come off as being opinionated and strong-minded. I am somewhat cynical and jaded - but I try not to show it too much. No one likes someone who curses the world or society - especially Australians. It's hard being a responsible adult at times when ignorance predominates and the majority disagrees. But I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I took the easy way out on those issues.

I'm being diplomatic and not lowering my standards. Several people in that thread over the last day were downright rude and pretty much racist. That was not on. I'm not taking a swipe at people or their stance - I'm taking the spirit of the opinion to court. This is not directed at you.

Do you really think talking down/taking a swipe at another country is going to achieve anything? There's passionate support and then there's being downright disrespectful.

I didn't like what was said in that thread because it brang back a lot of ugly memories. Being beaten virtually every damn day between the ages of 5 and 17 simply because I'm half Indian. Or the comments/looks I got post 9/11 because of the colour of my skin. Or the decades of crap my mother got in the 50s and 60s in Australia for being Polish.

The behaviour by several people this weekend was an utter disgrace. You're not one one of them. I find it amusing people get so burnt up over a freaking moe contest that means absolutely nothing in the greater picture - something which Archon_Wing and I agree on. This is the behaviour I consider typical of AST. I don't want to see it in ISML. I had enough problems nearly being killed in high school over racism. I won't tolerate it anywhere.

So if I seem like I'm being harsh, well - I HAVE MY REASONS. And I make no apologies for that.

As for Kanade, I simply wanted a close match. Mikoto gave us one and is the only plausible one to beat Kanade. I don't get that burnt up over it because I called this domination back in April 2010 in the 2010 ISML thread. Back then, most people thought I was insane and that I'd be proven wrong, especially wontaek. Only Konakaga had the balls to back me up. And when it happens, everyone wonders how it could be. The signs were always there - I'm not a moe scholar at all and I predicted it. I don't like Kanade but I don't hate her. Truthfully, once this round is over, the only character I'd want to beat her is Mikoto. Once I was able to rationalise Kanade's population with the fact she's a character that's hard to hate and has a popular seiyuu in Kana Hanazawa delivering her, it makes sense. If this is what people want, so be it! Why waste time, energy and brain cells over a moe contest that effectively means nothing in the world?! All it means is that out of the 10k people that voted, it means the majority of them think Kanade is better and that there was probably some collaborative voting somewhere, but meh. That's the Internet for you. It may have been bewildering earlier in the year, but meh. Why should I honestly care so much about what 10k people I'll never know properly or meet face-to-face have to say? They have their reasons, I have mine.

I'm sick of the spiteful and childish behaviour being displayed by people when their fave loses. You can be upset but it's not justification to get violent over it. And people should know better than to be like that.

Don't take it personally. For the record, I reworded that post to address the discrimination more obviously. Because that's my beef. I almost died in my teens over racism. I'll be damned if I tolerate it anywhere ever again.

Oh wait...YOU wrote that? I remember being linked to it at least once before.

Seriously, bravo. It is very seldom that I find someone who appreciates Nanoha over Fate (though she's fine too), much less being able to appreciate her character on any kind of top-tier level.

Like I said on your blog, apologies in advance if what I wrote was too strong, but I believe I stayed polite. I'm not knocking you or your stance, per se. I'm knocking Urobuchi and his approach to writing.

Yeah, since I follow these threads quite regularly, it is disheartening to see the double standards people post between shows.

Anyway, how is the weather in Newfoundland? I went to Toronto a few weeks ago, and it was much colder than I would like (I'm a southern California native). Did the snow storm get you guys?

My predictions of sexy time from last week were right, I think. I totally didn't expect it.

However this is +1 regardless. It'd be more, but Shana still looks unconscious. Yuji! You're doing it wrong.

Someone posted images from the upcoming Shana episode. Possible spoiler but the image looks funny.

All I can say is that I'm giggling.

Hope that gets you excited... err, in the expecting an interesting episode sense.

I'm beginning to think it is a hopeless cause to try to convince many of those that seem to hate so much in Guilty Crown. It seems that they are huge fans (mostly Horizon backers) of other series that are competing with Guilty Crown this season. Maybe if you ignored them, they might just stop posting instead of the same old crap they spew.
