Well, dependent on someone else, or being independent or being strong or weak isn't the issue. There's probably many sexist depictions of strong and independent females if it's just used as a fetish item or especially the "she needs a man anyways" tripe. I think Clannad barely averted that with Tomoyo (though Tomoyo After not as much and can be safely ignored as just being a pointless what-if spinoff.)

What matters is choice. This means that anything from burqas to skimpy swimsuits, from prudery to blatant sexuality can be sexist if it's regarded not as a choice on the persons' part but to solely please other people. But as you've noted this gets twisted around so much to fan desires. It would be kinda ironic if Madoka would spiral down even faster than Nanoha did, but then again I have like negative respect for Shaft/Shinbo at certain points so it's to be expected. In either case, yuri fetishism has at the same time brought to the forefront but because it's being fetishized can never be taken seriously outside people's dark bedrooms. It's been emphasized for all the wrong reasons.

Anime often has so much trouble just appreciating platonic relationships too. I could list all the shallow and forced attempts at romance just to create drama and pairings but that would be too tedious. It's no wonder I scoff at romantic elements so often.

Of course, male characters have the same problem. As you might have pointed out, there's so much expectations for them to all be conniving and cold blooded, and violent. Where a guy that doesn't solve his problems through violence and destruction is criticized as being not a man. Besides, you don't need a body count or life threatening injuries meted out to others. Hell, look at Akagi. He hasn't killed anyone; and anyone that did get fucked up dealing with him brought it upon themselves. And I bet nobody brings this up, but he does often pick the solution that doesn't result in more bloodshed. (Such as vs the punks or Urabe... he could have easily killed them all if he was a true asshole. But he didn't.) Though at the same time I guess Madhouse did make him seem more cold in the anime-- they cut out some of his more human moments. There's still a few in the anime, and I find those actually pretty good to round out his character-- in the end he's just a human.

Ultimately, to make good characters you need to make them appear to have their own will and sentience. Otherwise, you get a lot of junk and characters that aren't people-- they're caricatures. And I have never been forgiving of such things.

Well, it's certainly a very novel series. I think they did create things that were unique and stood out. In particular, Nanoha the really charismatic lead that isn't afraid to take charge is a far cry from the incompetent and scared audience surrogate that seems to populate this kind of show. Fate is put out as a tragic character but her internal and external conflict don't define her as a person as that would just be rather contrived and manipulative. Instead, it's used as a stepping stone to bigger and better things. If they took anything of value from mecha anime it would be the heated conflict between those with different ideologies that are fighting for their own cause and that has that whole "in any other universe we'd be friends" or some crap, but very prevalent in A's.

May want to check out the movies.

One of Nanoha's main attractions was its delicate, and sometimes perfect, balance of magical girl with mecha. It's first two seasons combined the strengths of both genres while discarding most of the weaknesses, creating something very appealing to many fans of either genre and certainly for people who like both genres. But over time the Nanoha franchise erred a little bit too heavily on the mecha side, and I think that created an opening that was exploited by Madoka Magica, Symphogear, and other more recent magical girl shows.

Nanoha also suffers a bit from a clear lack of direction, and the sense that the people behind it are just milking it for all its worth. Nanoha/Fate has been teased for too long, meaning that newer (and sometimes less ambiguous) yuri pairings have kind of eclipsed it.

However, none of this changes how very good those first two seasons were. For a magical girl fan who wants something more mature and serious than PreCure typically is, but maybe not as dark as Madoka is, Nanoha's first two seasons provides the perfect balance there. It's light and endearing, but without feeling fluffy and inconsequential.

    I'm glad you're enjoying it!

Sounds good to me. I'll be sitting back and enjoying it regardless of what other people are swinging around and taking a cartoon too seriously.

Eren's no Shinji I feel but yea I don't feel he's a particularly impressive character either. Attack on Titan is somewhat decent but it's found elsewhere. I don't obsess too much.

And yea, Tsuzuki thinks that if you play the tragedy card enough blindly, it's gonna work. Just because it worked a few times, doesn't mean you can blindly push it forward.

    Spoiler:

Yea it sucks. Pretend it doesn't exist.

Well, my fellow Australian, I should point out Girlfriends is a Hell of a lot better rereading it and getting over the will they won't they thing that bugged me the first time around. Now if Milk-sensei carried over what she did here to Nana and Hitomi from Sakurairo I'd be one happy camper.

Thanks a lot for the cosplay pics from AVCon. Those are very good cosplays! I'm particularly impressed with the woman in the very metal and futuristic-looking suit.

Yea, any time you get a source material that gets regarded as Biblical and if you haven't been enlightened to every detail and all the supplementary material, you are some heathen. It's the same shit that has caused humanity grief over history on a smaller scale. This happens with every crappy LN, and you could see the worst with Haruhi-- while FSN is certainly not that, it could get kinda bad.

I can't exactly blame them (at least, not all of them), since it is a given there is another extreme at work: some people are pretty abrasive when it comes to criticism, even watching shows that won't be to their liking.
Hell, we had members who had to "crash the party" when a series is too popular and/or from a specific anime studio / directed by a specific individual.

To me, anime series in general generate a bipolar audience, and it becomes apparent that "you must be in a side: either you are with us, or with 'them'" trop is being more present over the years. I'm pretty sure this trend was there ever since late 2000, but it becomes quite apparent since 2010 imho.
