The Steins;Gate-Romance debate has probably gotten a bit out of hand, yeah. Sorry for my part in that.

Truth be told, the more I think about it the more I dislike the idea of one series dominating a lot of genre categories because I'd like to give more room for lesser-known series' to shine. That was an idea I tried to convey in my hypothetical Fate/Zero vs. Another situation when it comes to Mystery/Horror 2012.

I'm probably caring more about this than I ought to, but what can I say, it can make for interesting discussion!

Looks like Jericho is still a heel; parodying the general catering to the fans that most returning stars do.

    It doesn't look like it.

I can't see anything good coming out of Aquarion.

Right now, Another is my favorite new Winter 2012 anime, but Chihayafuru is my favorite currently airing show.

Another is a rare case of anime doing Horror/Mystery almost to perfection, imo. Like Reckoner, I think you'd find it just Ok, but it might be worth your time.

I'm also really liking Rinne no Lagrange and Moretsu Pirates. Both of these shows have a bit of a space sci-fi throwback to them which you may well appreciate. I think they have pretty well-rounded female leads so far, after watching two episodes of each. It's possible that there might be something in them that'll rub you the wrong way, but I think they're worth a try. If you do watch Lagrange, prepare yourself for some silly fanservice in the first episode, but I didn't notice much in the 2nd. With Pirates, prepare yourself for a slow-burning plot, even I found that a bit too slow.

I'm also liking Aquarion EVOL, but I have my doubts you would. It is pretty cheesy/silly, lol.

With Nisemonogatari, I liked the first episode, and was pretty displeased with the second. If you watch it, prepare for really random conversations and plot movement (if you can even call it a plot so far, lol).

There's some other shows this season I've found Ok, but they haven't really grabbed me to the point yet where I can say much about them either way.

Miki is actually my least favorite idol. I can't put my finger on exactly what, but something about the way she talks and acts really ticks me off. It doesn't help that she's apparently Nishigori Atsushi's favorite character and ended up grabbing a lot of screen time as a result.

And for the record - I do know not all tsunderes hit guys. Well aware. But they are more likely to do it that most other character types, hence why I used the term.
    Okay then.

Have you seen Mawaru Penguindrum? I'm watching it right now and it's pretty awesome, although it loses a couple points due to Ikuhara Kunihiko's penchant for incomprehensibility. I can see why it's considered one of the "Big 3" anime of the year in many parts.

I look forward to seeing the poll results. They might convince me to expand my horizons more.

    Shows I'm seriously following.

Nisemonogatari - Assuming you hate. Disappointed with episode 2, but still promising and ejoyed episode 1.
Moretsu Pirates - Assuming you found mediocre. Find it to be pretty solid so far, but not remarkable.
Another - Assuming you'd find it mediocre. Find it to be pretty good so far.
Rinne no Lagrange - Not sure what you would think. Dumb yuri mecha show, but it's pretty fun adn enjoyable iwth a little throwback to the 90's.
Daily Lives of high School Boys - No idea if you would like. Find it pretty refreshingly funny, though don't know how long that will last.
Knight in the Area - Reminds me of adachi style stuff. If you're into it, might enjoy, though not as good as Adachi himself.
Natsume Book of Friends 4th Season - Still same goodness I've come ot expect form this series. No idea if you were ever into it.

    Still carrying:

Hunter x Hunter(2011) - As a shonen fan I like it. More faithful to the manga than it's older version.
Last exile Fam S2 - Good, but some qualities in it that make it a little less special than the original.
Chihayafuru - Fantastic show really. Pretty flawless in the technical department.

Yep, Okada is prime time for trolling and insanity. Often times she'll write something insanely terrible, but other times you might get True Tears. Hit and miss is certain.

Well, currently seeing the results of an annual club poll with a voting pool of 30 people, it's providing some rather intriguing but overall pleasing results for a year we screened an equal mix of newer and old-school titles - 102 to be exact. Can link you the results once the countdown finishes next week if you're interested.

I think your stance is quite justified. Steins;Gate is primarily a Sci-Fi title and probably the best representative of the genre in a long while, maybe even back to the days Ghost in The Shell 2nd GIG was airing. It's one of the main reasons I stuck with it. So yeah, seeing that lead the Romance category was very 'Er...really?' 2011 romance, I'd have thought more of Kimi ni Todoke S2 and maybe Mashiroiro Symphony. So yeah, I think the fact 2011 was lacking in that department and that there wasn't a title people were feeling magnetic towards allowed a more popular title in general to subvert that category. Which is what you said. If someone asked me if there was a romance anime in 2011 worth watching, I'd tell them to try 2010 or 2009 instead since 2011 was relatively weak in that area.

Yeah, it's why I take polls like these with a pinch of salt as well as limit my participation in threads in the Suggestion sub forum. People tend to take minor aspects and blow it into what they want to see for themselves, thus skewing their judgement and what they recommend to others. It's why I usually can't take the recommendations of others seriously and just look at the titles myself.

On Steins;Gate - there isn't content that was 18+? Weird, I was certain I saw a game CG of Kurisu losing her virginity to Okabe somewhere and that heku had drawn it. I saw it on Konachan but that site is down atm, I'll link it via PM later if I can find it again. Because when I saw that, I got the impression it was 18+. Also curious because someone sent me an English patch for the game and I was intending to try it out for myself very soon.

Unfortunately, it's been hectic for me in the past 2 weeks, so I haven't watched much this season. You can see what I'm watching/following on my about page.

As for Mari Okada... lol Aquarion. It could potentially be a good so bad it's good show, but I kinda can't afford the time for those atm.

While a small sample size is probably what contributes to the Romance situation this year, I don't necessarily think that a popular show winning many categories is all bad. So long as the show can be a reasonable representative of the genre (Like Cross Game was, even if I didn't saw it fit to vote for it), then I don't see all that much issues. Preference in what is best in a specific category is subjective, after all.

What I take issue with in this case though, despite myself loving Steins:Gate (On that note, the VN doesn't have any 18+ material), is it being pushed for the best in a category it doesn't represent. While the romance elements were certainly handled well, it simply is not a romance show by any sensible definition of a romance show. And while the lack of many strong contenders this year is regrettable, I don't think that makes it ok to nominate an inappropriate contender for the position. Two wrongs don't make a right.

It's like "Hm, romance category, not too much to pick from this year ... wait, Steins Gate was an awesome show that dabbled in romance near the very end of it, I'll put that down instead!". An exaggerated notion by all means, but it's to illustrate how I think S;G has ended up in said category. No one is wrong for liking the romance in S;G, it was a good one, and no one is necessarily wrong for finding it the most engaging pairing (though this has more to do with the drama heavy Sci-Fi spin of the story, rather than the actual romance me thinks), but that still doesn't make it a romance show.

You wouldn't recommend it for someone who asks for a romance anime primarily ... so is it really proper to have a show potentially win category X, when you couldn't even really suggest it to someone who is looking for shows of said X genre ? I don't know, but I have a feeling that if the shows don't offer significant content of the genre they are advertised as, then the genre categories actually lose meaning and integrity.

It's obviously a popularity contest to a large degree, and S;G is certainly popular, and rightfully so, but I feel that it featuring so heavily in the romance category actually diminishes the overall value and credibility of the awards as a whole. A less than ideal romance show is still a romance show ... S;G, no matter how perfect one might think it is, will never be a romance show. And that is my issue this year - not a popular show winning many categories (that has been happening all along), but a popular show featuring heavily in a category where it simply doesn't belong (presumably because of its popularity), a category it can't actually represent. I want S;G to win the Sci-Fi award ... but as a romance fan, I don't even want to see it in the romance category, because that's just misleading towards people who might want to pick up the show based on it's award status, looking to find the supposedly most fulfilling romance show of the year, and creates wrong expectations about the show.
