I can only fly when I take my glasses off... and that's way too much of a hassle.

I always figured that they would end up together, it just felt right to me. Not sure how much of that was hope and how much of it was prediction in retrospect, but it didn't surprise me when it happened. Asami Imai doesn't actually have that many anime roles... certainly few, if any, that are as high profile and noteworthy as Chihaya and Kurisu. She had a somewhat bizarre role in Kiss x Sis (yup, the series is exactly what it sounds like...) and delivered a superbly cute performance in Shufuku no Campanella, but that's about what I've seen from her on the anime front. Possibly my favorite role from her, and what initially endeared her to me as a voice actress was her portrayal of Tsubaki Yayoi from the game Blazblue: Continuum Shift. The game's anime through and through (sometimes for better or worse ), and she even gets a chance to show off her singing talent on a few occasions.

I'm fine with sitting. Lying down would also have been acceptable.

I suppose you're right, the romance wasn't build up to very consistently. It didn't really bother me, but it probably would have been an even better scene if they had been together for a while beforehand, now that I think about it. You're taking the extra-curricular stuff into account more than I would, since you're a bigger Idolmaster-music fan than I am. I can certainly understand how that makes you lean heavier in Chihaya's direction. They're both great characters anyhow. I heard there was going to be a Steins;Gate movie somewhere down the line as well... I wonder what that will concern. I'm getting the same feeling I got when I heard about the Madoka movie(s). I liked the way both of those shows wrapped up, and I'm not sure what a movie would add to the experience. Hopefully I'm proven entirely wrong on both counts.. that would be sweet.

Not quite sure I get what you mean about the halfway analogy being ironic for university students.

Honestly though, I'm not surprised your class didn"t come up with my explanation. It's not something that you're going to think of unless you know there's a "cute daughter" character type to begin with. You're not going to figure that out from Gunslinger Girl alone, and to be honest you don't see it much in anime these days because so many shows have teenage protagonists and hence you tend to have little sisters instead. But I'm familiar with a couple older VNs with adult protagonists where a non-romancable girl see the main character as a father figure. And because I've seen a couple older moe fans who have made comments to the effect about certain characters.

(alternately, you can demphasize the girl-handler relationship as part of the appeal entirely and just say that lolis with guns is a big part of the appeal, which is why I didn't disagree with that part of your analysis that much (though I do agree with Don that this is a seinen appeal and that the ambiguous morality/plot is also extremely important).

I will not stand for inequity! It and I cannot coexist. (Okay, just this once..)

So you don't have any sort of magic bullet, eh? I've been in many a tangled web trying not to get everything flying all over the place, so I imagine your meticulous approach would require quite a bit of patience. My only really noteworthy issue with Steins;Gate is Daru... I found his incessant perverted comments sort of annoying, and that made the scenes with him that were supposed to be taken seriously miss the mark with me. Surprisingly, I thought he was really funny in the OVA... I don't know if he grew on me or if that was just an anomaly. It'd be fun to rewatch the series and see if it irks me the same way. But yeah, other than that, it's a great series, both in terms of humor, characters and story. Kurisu probably edges out Chihaya due to the sheer difference in focus and screemtime. She simply got more development and time to shine. Though Chihaya did so much with what little she was given... the emotional climax during the concert was incredible... so yeah... it is actually not that simple. It's Kurisu for me, she'll probably end up on my list of favorite female characters one day, but Chihaya puts up an admirable fight given her limited resources, and is simply impossible to dislike.

First off, I don't think you should have to apologize for tardiness in your reply when it took me almost three weeks to get back online... that seems like an inequity. :P

I bet it took ages to write, man. Adding in a rewatch of a the series, that's a substantial workload. (Although this is as good a reason as any to revisit the series, which I too find to be absolutely wonderful.) I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts on Steins;Gate as well! Though I have some minor gripes with it, I found that to be an amazing series overall. (Asami Imai in a leading role and I like it? Whodathunkit.)

    Heya.

Sorry about never being online and whatnot. Not exactly been having the time of my life lately. But hey, at least the weather's been nice...

Hope you're doing alright. I caught your review of Toradora, unbelievably detailed as always. Can't believe you did an episode-by-episode commentary on a 25-episode series. Did you have to rewatch it for the review?

(I'll try to actually be around to see your answer to that, but my psyche is a bit of a powder keg, so lately I've been about as reliable as a Sylvia Browne psychic reading.)
