What are the chances of them going to the same college? If they go to separate colleges I guess they could still meet up; it wouldn't be the same though. Even if they go to the same college we might lose out on Sawako and Kazuya.

Cause it won't make sense if they translate it to:

Yui: MOUNTAIN!
Mio: NO!
Mugi: RIVER!
Mio: NO!

they can live it as is....
Yui: YAMA!
Mio: YADA!
Mugi: KAWA!
Mio: YADA!

They can probably use something else that rhymes.
I don't know what context this is in, but something like
Yui: SUGAR!
Mio: NEVER!
Mugi: FLOUR!
Mio: NEVER!
Or.. something.

Read chapter 33 where we discover that Mugi was recommended by her father to go to Japan Women's University (it obviously matches her perference as well). You can thank Mio for the rest deciding to go there in ch.43. So the band wont break up, unless one of them fails the entrance exam. The only question is Azusa as she is a year behind them and still has a year to decide where she wants to go.

They already attend an all-girls' highschool, right?
Heh it seems we won't be getting any significant male cast members for a while then. (I thought we would at least see some of their fathers...) Not that it's such a bad thing though.

Kak Worm 2010-02-08 15:50

Meh, I was actually hoping that they would choose to enter a mixed gender college. Having significant male cast members enter the picture would be a nice change of pace.

Romance development FTW! :D

Ithekro 2010-02-08 15:54

MugiVision covers romantic development.

I assume you're joking. Her orientation is used more as a humor device than anything. She could be bi, too.

Ithekro 2010-02-08 18:41

It is enough to keep one amused. It is a comedy series, not a romance or harem series.

girl-crushes are a pretty common occurrence, especially in girl's schools. it may or may not translate to any life choices. Mugi is obviously personally struggling with the thoughts in her head but that's part of the entertainment of watching. :)

I'm pretty sure it's more slice of life than anything. That being said, even if it is comedy, it could still include romantic elements. I do not in any way want a harem situation.

Kak Worm 2010-02-12 08:55

Chapter 45 scans are out!

bhl88 2010-02-12 09:03

Mugi's resistance is over 9000... has she been with girls most of the time?

fict_ticious 2010-02-12 09:14

Kakifly has been using Mugi as a punchline a little more in the last couple chapters...

DJ Trouble 2010-02-12 13:47

Read through the manga recently, then rewatched the series to make sure I wasn't imagining my impressions of the manga.

The two have a very different feel. The manga wins out in the first round.

What do you think is going to happen after they graduate? End of K-on?

The main 4 will attend the same school, so the main core of the band will stay intact.

What happens to Azusa is the real question. She's a year behind the rest and unless they all flunk their finals and don't graduate, she will have to leave the band till she gets to college as well (and that's assuming she decides to go to the same one the others plan on going to).

A likely scenario is that she'll have to recruit 3 new members for the club for it to stay afloat, possibly forming her own band (and I'm not ruling out that she'll convince Ui to join if so, considering they're very good friends and Ui has even better perfect pitch than Yui), but that all depends on how much Azusa wants to stay in After-School Tea Time and if there aren't any other methods Azusa can utilize to stick with this band.

Where is it revealed that Ui has better perfect pitch (can they even be "better"?)? I know Ui is talented in music and that they're siblings, but perfect pitch isn't your typical genetic trait (if it's related to genetics at all).

Unless it was revealed in a future manga chapter that I have not read.

Volume 2, chapter 11. Ui takes Yui's place when she gets a cold and plays the guitar even better than Yui does. After she gets exposed, when Azusa asks her if she could play the guitar, Ui answers by saying she only practiced a few days (and there's no indication that she could already play it before that). So, whatever skill Yui has, Ui seems to have it too and better (or at least, is better at using it to her advantage).

Having a knack at guitar is not the same as having a good music sense or perfect pitch. Azusa is better at Yui at guitar, but she doesn't have perfect pitch. Ui has proven that she's skilled, but if that's where you're drawing your conclusions from it's not conclusively perfect pitch in any way.

Also, Ui has played "a little", but she could just be being modest. If she watches her sister play and learns the chords along with her sister, having dextrous fingers and a good tempo would be enough to play a song well.

Not saying that Ui isn't talented, but we aren't sure that Ui could completely replace Yui (music wise). Ui hasn't shown the perfect pitch or the knack at writing songs that Yui has yet.

I beg to differ, from what I recall Ui>Yui when it comes to writing song lyrics.
Seems to me overall Ui is the better musican but obviously she would never be a real replacement for Yui.

babohtea 2010-02-18 20:08

What, really? I thought for sure it was that Yui was a talented songwriter, and when she first presented her new song idea the club immediately assumed that it was Ui who did it for her because they were so good. In actuality, Yui was the one who wrote it. Am I missing something?

Have they actually explicitly compared the two's lyrics? I didn't know Ui contributed at all.

DJ Trouble 2010-02-20 14:56

Wasn't that Yui claiming she wrote the songs with a little help from Ui, when really Ui did most, if not all of, the writing? I think that was the gag the manga was using.

In the manga Yui feels like a regular lazy girl and in the anime she feels like she's always spacing out and has her head in the clouds. The manga is funnier, and all the characters have a playful, mischievous air to them. Yui, Eyebrows, and a basically everyone that isn't Ritsu loses that aspect of their personalities. The manga is obviously about the gags, while the anime has a more laid back approach to it.

Sparvid 2010-02-20 15:42

Yui wrote Boiled Rice is a Side Dish (presumably a follow up to Curry Before Rice). Ui read it and decided to help her. This resulted in three songs, which went over great with the other girls. Yui claimed that Ui only helped her a tiny bit, but the others didn't buy that explanation.

Then Ui caught a cold, and while she was bedridden Yui by herself wrote U & I about the situation, which got an even better response.
So even if Ui is good at writing lyrics, Yui can do it as well.

Good at maths a year above her, good at guitar after a couple of tries, great cooking skills and well-liked.

She's pretty much a Mary Sue.

Ui really baffles me as a character. She's more talented guitar-wise, smarter, more active, even has a larger bust as according to Sawa-chan...yet she's a little sister who seems to have a creepy attraction to her OLDER sister in a cute, moe way, not the "Oh, I really respect her" way.

So I'm confused there. It feels like if you factor in Ui's talents, Yui's only talent is her super metabolism. ^^;

tyranuus 2010-02-23 10:40

Perhaps thats why Ui is so good, she wants to impress Yui by being able to keep up with her even though she's younger...only problem is Yui's so lost in being lazy she never notices :p
If thats the case Ui should go spend some time with Sawako and learn to play solos etc :p

Note I've only watched the show and crept into the end of this thread. K-On might as well be called Music and Trope - The Anime.... tis all good fun.

Vexx 2010-02-23 13:43

Music and Trope - The Anime

Heh!! I ended up enjoying the series despite my lament of "needs more music" and I'll grant that's a great subtitle for it.

tyranuus 2010-02-23 15:07

I think that sums up my feeling towards the anime as well, good fun, just wish it had more of the music itself in it! I enjoyed the episodes where there was a performance more than the others pretty consistantly across the series. Just wish it was as easy to play as the show makes it seem!

I think the way I described it elsewhere kinda summed up my feelings (bar the needing more band stuff) on it:

"Hmmm, embarressingly enough I've watched the entirety of K-On! in the last few days, after having it recommended because of how much I enjoy music. I dont think I've even seen clips of an anime anything like it before. Parts of me were cringing inside, but as a huge music guy, I just couldn't quite bring myself to not enjoy an anime fundamentally about bands and making music, with an element of comedy thrown on top.

Would have been a lot better if it's persued more of the rock/metal element that the story hinted it could a few times (especially as the ending is more of a raw j-rock style piece, and the video reminded me of an Alice Cooper/Marilyn Manson video!), but I enjoyed it. The 'friendly, innocent' teacher being a hidden rock/metal girl with some guitar skills was probably just a cherry on the cake"

Overall I enjoyed the show and will most likely watch the second season when it appears, but it doesnt compare in any form to the likes of Spice and Wolf which just got me hooked on a much deeper level (which was the first and only anime I've bought rather than rented, and have a copy of volume one with a second from RS with the slip cover on it's way etc), K-on's much lighter fun and thats what I enjoyed it as :)

New chapter is out and 2 things I approve of

1. Mugi X Azunyan (b^.^)b
2. Yui/Ui X Nodoka (b^.^)b

butt pillow ftw!:D

ReddyRedWolf 2010-03-13 19:17

With all the girls in third year Azusa should really start recruiting or she'll be all alone next year.

On another note Mio should really go out and meet new people. Ritsu, Yui, Mugi and Nodoka can't be the only friends she has.

Oh yeah their school is co-ed, right? They are practically boring in the romance department.:heh:

Ithekro 2010-03-14 01:07

All girls school

bhl88 2010-03-14 01:10

So Yui and Ritsu finally got a C (and they were talking about different things like body fat percentages, probability of entering the school is 20% and TV view ratings of 40%).

Yui and Ui like snuggling people, no matter who (and Nodoka fell asleep).

Mio really misses them.

Mugi learns how to play guitar like Yui.

How can it be boring when Mio and Ritsu are blatantly flirting and making out with each other?

Is it just me, or are Yui and Ritsu sorta turning into Sketchbook's Fuu and Ryou (except with a slightly closer connection to reality)?

This is what happened afterwards between Mugi and Azusa.

Spoiler for What really happened after Page 4.:

Now damn you Kakifly, now I can't decide if I like YuixUixAzusa, MioxRitsuxNodoka or YuixUixNodoka better.

Indirect proof is proof by contradiction (if proposition p leads to a contradiction, not p must be true. If not p leads to a contradiction, p must be true).

Back on topic: A second anthology comic will be released on April 27, 2010 (ISBN 978-4-8322-7908-7, link).

Sparvid 2010-04-03 17:28

I'm trying to figure out what it is that makes me prefer the manga art style over the animation designs. I think the simplified eyebrows might have something to do with it, since it's most notable on Yui and Ritsu (and especially on their "serious" faces), but maybe there's some subtle difference in various proportions that I only notice subconsiously...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...d/Yuimanga.jpg

The manga artwork sort of reminds me of the Moomin comics (and that's a good thing :))

It seems that could possibly be the case: Yui & Ritsu Second-Hand!? Otaku Shock at K-ON! Bombshell.

Brace yourselves for another shitstorm (same as the Nagi controversy), but this time from the hardcore K-ON! fans. :heh:
