Last Exile -Fam, The Silver Wing-

Source: ANN

Quote:

The exhibitor notes at the Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) 2011 website revealed on Tuesday that the anime studio Gonzo is working on Last Exile ~Ginyoku no Fam~ (Last Exile -Fam, The Silver Wing-), "a new series of Last Exile [with] new story, [main] characters, and mechanical designs" for 2011.

Gonzo had worked with character designer Range Murata (Blue Submarine No. 6, Solty Rei, Shangri-La) on the original Last Exile anime series in 2003. The studio told ANN during last March's TAF that it was developing a potential Spring 2011 project that would take advantage of the new stereoscopic 3D televisions now entering the marketplace. Gonzo also showcased a stereoscopic 3D version of a Last Exile vehicle and four character design sheets for a new project in the works at the fair, although it did not specify at the time whether these materials were from the same Spring 2011 project.
A new Last Exile anime with new story, main characters and Rang Murata working on it? Sign me up.

I've always had a soft spot for GONZO since the original Last Exile. Makes me tear a little seeing 'em continuing this series as part of their renewal. Excellent, wonderful news.

Reckoner 2011-02-01 18:18

I love Last Exile, but I can't help but feel that they just might ruin a good thing. :(

Guardian Enzo 2011-02-01 18:45

Love Last Exile too, though I would be happier if they revisited Claus and Lavie - I thought there was a lot more life in that story.

I agree, though in the other hand there's plenty of material for a new story with a new cast, and personally i'd be much more for that. Especially regarding how long it's been since the original series.

Same_Shark 2011-02-01 21:44

I'm seriously about to cry with excitement! This could go either way, but even so, it's a world I wanna go back to!

Master_Yoma 2011-02-01 22:20

I hope you dont have to watch the first one to get into this

Decagon 2011-02-01 22:25

I thought Last Exile was stunning and very original compared to what its cohorts were at the time, but... for the life of me I couldn't understand what was going on with intercharacter relations.

wandering-dreamer 2011-02-01 22:43

ANN posted this article a little while back and, while it's not confirmed that these are characters for the new series, the character designs look awfully LE to me,

ZODDGUTS 2011-02-01 23:49

Here's hoping the story doesn't fall apart towards the end this time.

Kaioshin Sama 2011-02-02 00:45

No freaking way! Last Exile was probably the best show I saw come out of my universities anime club and to this day one of the most visually stunning that I've seen. Loved the setting, loved the atmosphere, loved the story and characters, it was all great. Gotta channel that here of course to make me feel the same way, but wow, did not see this coming. Anyone else remember that haunting opening Cloud Age Symphony?

Still haven't heard anything else quite like this song anywhere else. Favourite part of the intro is when all the soldiers are aiming their guns preparing to fire broadside.......man haven't seen a steampunk show in ages.....this is such good news. :)

Errr...which show are we talking about again? What story fell apart in what show?

Patchy 2011-02-02 01:55

One of Gonzo's gem, I'm really eager to wait for this show...

@reckoner - no!! don't say some bad omen >_< :heh:

Haha, I'm sorry. I always expect the worst out of things. I'll try to be positive this time ;).

I'm sure Gonzo will try to deliver quality on this product since it is their revival anime I suppose?

I looks more like an experimental with 3d than a revival itself project itself, however I feel it is a bit too soon.

You should really check out the original if you have the time. It was IMO Gonzo's best work.

While I found the story great for the most part, personally I found the final part to be not as executed as well.

Close but that would be Gankutsuou and Kaleido Star. Yeah I know opinions opinions.

MeoTwister5 2011-02-02 04:23

Looks like it's time for that rewatch. It's still Chiwa Saito's best role IMO.

Used Can 2011-02-02 05:39

Hmm... I don't know. I loved Last Exile, but the story seemed properly concluded. So, I honestly don't see what they could do, unless they go for a prequel (and even then, we've got enough information to know what happened).

This is one of those situations in which I simply liked the show so much, and in which I believe the show was so well done and properly ended, that trying to do something else with it has high chances of ending up in disaster.

applejuice 2011-02-02 07:20

This and Gankutsuou is one of few animes by Gonzo that gets the most praises. Although, Last Exile's ending was badly executed, which is constant mistake Gonzo does all the time. At least this one's ending was a bit better than others Gonzo's works, though. (like NHK or Certain Urobuchi scripted animu)

Gonzo has already fallen once, but it was mostly due to their shit business management. (extremely poor DVD sales also contributed though.) The more important thing is, actual staffs involved with this.

Why? Just watch the first season. It's a must watch show, plus there's plenty of time before the second will start.

-Sho- 2011-02-02 08:06

Seems like i missed a great anime , will try it. I was sceptic when i saw Gonzo.

Kanon 2011-02-02 08:37

What? what? what? This is a completely unexpected news for me. Since I love Last Exile, I would usually be ecstatic about such news, but unfortunately, I've long since given up all faith I had in Gonzo. I'll watch it of course, but I'm not getting my hopes. I'd rather be cautious and end up pleasantly surprised than hopeful and eventually bitterly disappointed.

Gankutuou is definitely their finest work for me as well. It's like they gathered all the awesomeness and money that was to be allocated to every single show they would produce in the next 10 years and poured it all in this one series.

I agree with both titles, though I didn't see part 2 of Kaleido Star. I'd also add Getsumen to Heiki Mina above Last Exile.

Last Exile had a ending. I just wonder if they're using it as a springboard to showcase their 3D skills. It can't be due to the title's popularity in Japan as it's from 2003 and should of had a follow up by now or a blu-ray release in Japan.

Haha take it easy guys, i did say it was in my opinion :heh:.

All the works you mentioned were wonderful Gonzo works. The point being, it's one of their best ones and is a must see watch even if it isn't necessary to view to understand this one.

TrueKnight 2011-02-02 14:08

Oh my God.... I can't believe my eyes. At first I thought this was a joke but then after researching it seems like it's true and we're going to have another Last Exile. The first series for me was a complete masterpiece with superb animations if compared by today's standard, heck even better in most cases considering that the series was made when Gonzo's still at its prime.

I also hope they don't screw this. Last Exile had given me a memorable and pleasant impression on anime in general, that it's not about moetards but focused on quality, beautiful animations and epic settings.

Perfectly understandable, most of Gonzo series tend to be misses. Last Exile was one of the few hits.

Anyway I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Guardian Enzo 2011-02-02 20:27

For my money this was Gonzo's best work. And even largely exempt from their botched ending syndrome, though I know not all agree.

I've been living under a rock and out off the radar, because I want to know if GONZO has recovered from the financial struggles and issues that forced the studio to go to near bankruptcy last year?

Is this true, or just I'm wrong ?

On-Topic:

To me Last Exile was memorable, because it was one of the very first anime titles that I watched after graduating recently from college during that era.

There were no words for me to describe the visuals, the characters, the storyline, the animation, and the music.

Even all the tiniest details were engaging.

The settings and the atmosphere felt to me as taken from the following historical time frames:
1. The Napoleonic Era
2. The late Industrial Revolution period
3. The World War I era

The vanships to me were a delicacy and a treat to my eyes watching flying at full motion.

Mirrinus 2011-02-02 21:30

Last Exile was one of my favorites, so despite my wariness at this being Gonzo, I'm excited for it. This will be the first Gonzo show I'll watch since...well, Last Exile.

You can easily pick up the original boxset for quite cheap now. You have until January until this next season is set to air. Plenty of time.

ars89 2011-02-03 18:15

wow great news, i'm going to have to re-watch it

antigone 2011-02-03 18:18

Last Exile's setting was intriguing and teeming with potential. Then after sixteen episodes the potential was still unrealized. To think that it was done by a spectacular GONZO back then. Now a merely a shell of its former self, there's not really much rejoicing for this news.

They're profitable again, although that came after some severe downsizing. Half a dozen "ex-Gonzo" studios have since sprung up, so they're probably a very different company now (in terms of both management and personnel). The people who ran Gonzo before were ousted by the new ownership.

Most likely, someone looked at the shows/techniques that made Gonzo famous, and have decided to build on that.

germanturkey 2011-02-03 21:42

so happy. sooooo very happy. one of the best soundtracks ever.

I agree, so let's hope Dolce Triade and Hitomi Kuroishi return to work on the score.

+1

What are odds for this new season to be equally good?

-Sequels rarely are on par with the original
-Gonzo has no money
-Gonzo keeps messing its own stories after awhile
-And as a personal note, I wasn't thrilled with the show to begin with. The characters looked like dolls, the world was left undeveloped, the pacing was slow and fluxuating between good and bad moments, the ending was messy and rushed.

As for the funky airships and cool world, I think most of us switched to Bounen no Xamdou (an equally chaotic series with an equally messy ending with the only difference that it's made by Bones).

I am also not sure if the setting will even be interesting after other anime like Planet of the Beast King or Scrapped Princess had somewhat similar worlds (exaled, prisons).

So no, very low expectations from my part.

Shiroth 2011-02-04 07:34

Is there anything wrong with having our hopes up for this new series, really? I mean sure there's reason why it won't be good, though it's always a 50/50 chance.

MeoTwister5 2011-02-04 08:15

For all you know Gonzo may have gotten its act together and make an ending that's more of... say... Speed Grapher's last half (though I presume YMMV)..
