MisaoFan 2012-06-08 06:39

Before seeing this news, I thought the first season had poor sales that it didn't even get a second season. But when I saw this news, I am so surprised for some reasons !

It's likely due to the massive manga sales and decent rating(iirc) that it happened.

And this is great news :D.

ahelo 2012-06-08 07:44

There were already rumors of a second season but I was really shocked when I saw this announced. Anyway it had decent TV ratings (for a series airing midnight) and a massive increase on manga sales + an increase in interest in karuta in Japan (I remember seeing this news somewhere).

I'm just really REALLY happy right now!

Kanon 2012-06-08 07:47

YEEEESSSSS!! Brilliant news! Can't wait for the return of this amazing show.

articuzwolf 2012-06-08 07:54

well as long as they don't end it with crappy original anime ending...

Westlo 2012-06-08 08:03

Isn't this airing in the "Kaiji" timeslot? Sales really didn't matter much... lol @ people who wanted this on noitaminA.... 25 episodes + a second season >>>>>>> 11 episodes.

Katapan 2012-06-08 08:17

I made this really weird face when I saw the thread's title pop up as I refreshed the General Anime subforum out of complete disbelief... :D

I'm surprised the announcement isn't coming along with a TV drama or anything of the sort, though. It seemed like the only way to get more Chihayafuru, just like what NTV did for Kaiji (the second season most likely only happened because there was a second live-action movie coming). AFAIK, the bump in manga sales wasn't even that sizable either (I haven't compared the latest volumes though, will get around to that later today)... but eh, the production committee has to be making some money somewhere after all! And I'm so damn glad they did because I was 100% sure we'd never get to see the rest of the manga animated.

Kirarakim 2012-06-08 08:18

I had to suppress a scream of joy since I am at work.

But basically I am super thrilled :D

The latest volumes were pretty high. Chihayafuru Vol. 15 sold 360,000 copies

Pocari_Sweat 2012-06-08 09:42

Oh wow....
Looks like I should finish the first season :D

Haha same here. Fantastic news. It's always great when good shows get a continuation.

Oh, don't get me wrong, the manga is pretty damn popular - but it already was before the anime. I'm looking at the figures again, we can compare the first week sales for random volumes:

Vol. 10: 161,373
(...)
Vol. 14: 171,785
Vol. 15: 192,448
Vol. 16: 212,169

Volume 10 was released in September 2010, well before the anime. Volume 15 was the first one to reflect the anime bump, and vol. 16 was the latest released, right by the end of the anime. Of course it'll be interesting to see the increase on vol. 17 as well, because plenty of other people might've also thought that it'd be the end of animated Chihayafuru so they'd need to read the original to know who ends up winning the war between Arata and Taichi. :D

Guardian Enzo 2012-06-08 10:02

Sometimes the good guys win after all.

GoldenLand 2012-06-08 10:07

Yessss. This series deserved to be continued so much.

Utsuro no Hako 2012-06-08 10:26

Now if only Kodansha would release more of the bilingual editions so Americans can show our support.

Kaioshin Sama 2012-06-08 10:26

Okay so I guess the situation with anime and the future isn't as dire as I had figured. There's still plenty of room for shows like Chihayafuru. :)

That's two unlikely things to happen this week when I was absolutely certain they wouldn't.

Haak 2012-06-08 10:32

I thought this was gonna get merged with the other thread...

Well anyway this is awesome news. Frankly if there wasn't a second season then that would've simply been tragic, given where the first season left off. I can't wait.

-Sho- 2012-06-08 10:54

Best news today <3

I hope so but they translated all the 100 poems in the first two volumes so I am thinking that might be it.

Btw speaking of the Chihayafuru manga, vertical had a poll on their FB about what series we want them to license, & Chihayafuru was a choice on the poll. I don't think its getting enough votes though so go over & vote.

Well it's in fifth place now, even if it only has half the votes of Princess Jellyfish. But I have to wonder if the people voting have ever looked at Vertical's catalogue? Because I just don't see them putting out Baka & Test or Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere.

Reckoner 2012-06-08 12:55

Amazing news. A nice victory for quality anime.

Flower 2012-06-08 12:57

Mm hmm. Good news indeed! Hope they can keep up the standards of Season One. :)

deflate 2012-06-08 13:18

This is probably one of the best news I've heard this week ;____;

The question is, how much episodes this season will have? And when will it air?

Blaat 2012-06-08 16:25

I can't wait for the new Taichi Tuesday. :)

Master_Yoma 2012-06-08 21:15

Haaaazaaaaa this is just sweet hope its another 25eps

Unfortunately, only found this a little while ago, but Vertical said no to a few 12 volume series (think it was Kaji?) saying they were "too long" so at 16 volumes Chihayafuru probably counts as too long for them. Guess we should keep hoping for more bilingual volumes then? (or that Viz's Sig Ikki line picks it up, the only other close thing I can think of for a josei series)

LKK 2012-06-09 08:51

^^ I don't get Vertical & that poll. If they don't want long series like they've said & Chihayafuru is over the 12 volume limit that they mentioned on Twitter, then why did they put Chihayayfuru on their Facebook poll in the first place? That's just toying with us. :(

Hm, this discussion about Vertical and the possible licensing of the Chihayafuru really ought to be in the manga thread, shouldn't it? :uhoh:

Users can add their own suggestions, so Vertical may not've included it as an option. On the bright side, they're owned by Kodansha, so they can always pass the results on to their corporate masters and hope the American branch picks it up.

Making this on-topic: Even assuming the new season is another 25 episodes, that'll only get us caught up to where the manga is now. From what I've read the series is only about 2/3 of the way through, so if the manga doesn't get picked up in the US we better hope for an eventual third season.

Users added in all the suggestions, I was the second person to the page so I was the one who added in Princess Jellyfish. ^^

In any case I've forgotten, how many chapters/volumes did the first season cover? I think I've heard the manga is up to about 90 chapters now so I think there's enough for another 25 episodes at least.

Well now.
I didn't know vistors could add suggestions. That's disappointing to learn. :(

Kirarakim 2012-06-09 11:42

I think the US Kodansha branch might be the best bet to pick up the manga.

It would be great if those Bilingual editions were going to continue but it doesn't look like it. Don't these people want my money?

ars89 2012-06-11 22:15

Best news ever!

Kaioshin Sama 2012-06-12 13:02

All that's left to confirm is that the second season has the same writing staff and they didn't suddenly swap out the writer for Okada or something crazy like that.:uhoh:

Proto 2012-06-12 13:14

No cookies for you!

On other news, I'm pretty ecstatic about this. Yay.

Best news I've heard today!

But winter? Does that mean its only 1 cour? 2 cour series are are rare in Summer and winter..

Kirarakim 2012-09-12 09:39

YAY, I hate winter but at least I'll have my Chihayafuru to get me through the winter blues.

Guardian Enzo 2012-09-12 11:33

Mainichi says 2 cour, though I don't believe it's officially confirmed.
