Story
2061 AD. Fifty years have passed since mankind developed the Network society. It was anticipated that this new infrastructure would realize a utopia where people connected with each other at the level of consciousness. However, new social problems such as personal data leaks and proliferation of manipulated information began to surface. Nevertheless, people still relied on the Network to exchange information, and proved unable to opt to abandon it.

In due course, a new Network realm with more effective security measures was developed. This was called Meta Real Network, usually abbreviated as "the Metal."

The Metal accommodated personal memory data within protected virtual stand-alone organic cyber enclaves called bubble shells and eventually pervaded the everyday lives of people.

However, people gradually learned to release and explode their instincts within the secure environment of the Metal. The unleashed instincts pushed each individual's consciousness to drown in the sea of information and to be exposed to the pressures of desire. Meanwhile, norms and regulations continued to bind their real world lives. Thus, strange friction between the two worlds began to manifest themselves as aberrations beyond the bounds of the imaginable.
Experts who challenged the deep sea of the Metal to investigate and decipher such aberrations were called cyber divers.

This is a story of a cyber diver, Masamichi Haru, who investigates the incidents that lie between Reality and the Metal.

A cyberpunk anime with Shirow involved that interesting.

psycho bolt 2007-11-05 23:02

Hmmm, high expectations?

MrProphet 2007-11-06 15:56

Kazuhiro Furuhashi? HELL YEAH! He delivers on high expectations big time.

monir 2007-11-06 16:08

That synopsis is salivating. Oh man, I'm so in!

Shouta 2007-11-07 12:36

Oooh, this sounds interesting.

Westlo 2007-11-09 01:52

Looking forward to this and with high expectations.

7Th 2007-11-10 10:33

Shouldn't it be "incidents that lay..."? Whatever, at least the concept may be exploited fairly nicely by the actually good side of IG's visual studio.

Ungelic 2007-11-12 05:20

Somebody please tell me Haru can also be used as a male name ... =/
Reading through the story gives me huge deja-vus. Come on Shirow break that shell already. We know you can do something other than near-future-where-man-machine-reality-counciousness-tehinterweb clashes.

hobbes_fan 2007-11-12 06:41

Why change the formula for the sake of change? He does it well in a genre that's been unfashionable other than his stuff. His stuff fills a niche. There aren't a lot of strong female characters where they're unquestionably tough as nails bitches and there isn't a lot of cyberpunk out there.

Ungelic 2007-11-12 06:56

Not for the sake of change obviously. He has been using that formula for years now, he has touched every subject from cybersecks to death. He did create a rich world so I'm guessing he can do it again.

aardvark 2007-11-12 09:12

To be honest, I don't even think these are new stories that Shirow is making. He's just pulling out old crap from years ago for IG to animate.

He even said Ghost Hound dates back to something he created more than 10 years ago.

WanderingKnight 2007-11-12 10:34

Masamune Shirow + Production I.G. + Cyberpunk?

I'M SO FUCKING IN!

Well if Ghost Hound is any indication, then the old stuff is great too. :D

issei 2007-11-14 09:52

sounds very william gibson-esque. tentatively looking forward to this one.

Shinndou 2007-11-15 23:07

Well, it's hard for me to not to have some high expectation towards this... I mean, it's scripted/created by Shirow, it's directed by Furuhashi, and it's animated by Production I.G., and it's cyberpunk. And I wish that the promo image was bigger.

Do freakin' want.

Same here, along with I'd assume many Shirow or GITS fans, hopefully with at the very least the same care and writing quality that SAC got to help create the new setting and characters. With what they were able to pull off in SAC and other recent shows I can't wait to see what they can do A/V wise. And I'd definitely enjoy another amazingly strong female lead to compliment the awesome Major.

I know what you mean, it's hard to keep my expectations in check, but I hope I can since there's still the wait :)

Couldn't have said it better, and I'm also with you I certainly hope the lead is another rare female character like the Major. If that's what he wants he should really just watch Ghost Hound as it has the potential to be very good and is practically on the opposite end of the scale.

DangerMouse 2008-03-13 02:03

Thanks for the link!

The screens within the trailer with the animation are small, but the trailer confirmed that as expected with their big staffers, this show is going to be gorgeously animated.

Man, I can't wait till April and a bunch of these new shows.

WanderingKnight 2008-03-13 07:35

Oh man, oh man, oh man.

This show is going to rock so much. I can't wait...

SeijiSensei 2008-03-13 11:23

I'm glad I saw this thread; it's on my list now, too.

I'm amused that this show appears in exactly one posting in the "Spring, 2008, Anticipated Series" thread, and in one of the poster's signatures.

golthin 2008-03-13 16:17

Production I.G. really likes to make shows like this. Ghost hound and now this.

digiboy123 2008-03-14 01:43

Can't say that I fully understand it, but I'll be looking out for this show.

ZeusIrae 2008-03-16 08:52

If ghost hound is old stuff then bring moreof the old stuff.

This is very intresting, as others have said: cyberpunk+Shirow+IG=win!

But I hope it won't be too similar to GitS:SAC.

Jazzrat 2008-03-16 15:45

can never have enough good cyberpunk anime.

Westlo 2008-03-18 08:39

Finally got around to watching the PV and I'm looking forward to this even more now, don't know if I'll follow it weekly or just watch a few and save the rest to marathon through like I'm doing with Ghost Hound. Guess it depends on how much the first few episodes grab me and how often subs are released for it.

SneakerPimp 2008-03-28 03:20

New (proper) Trailer from the TAF 2008:
http://www.dannychoo.com/blog_entry/...Production+IG/

Westlo 2008-03-28 03:21

Oh I forgot to bump this thread with that, anyway the animation looks fucking awesome and I'm really digging the design of the older female main character.

MrProphet 2008-03-28 15:31

The trailer looks mighty professional. And it just reeks of Patlabor (and GITS of course, but mentioning that is redundant), especially in BG art style.

In fact, I'd venture to say that it looks very mid-90s-ish in every detail except the angry bishounen character, which is a new thing that anime got to have. 8)

Westlo 2008-03-29 07:52

First off isn't it unusual for a director to be directing two shows in the same season? Kazuhiro Furuhashi is doing this as well as Studio DEEN's Amatsuki.

Secondly anyone know the name of the older main female character? I just want to see who is voicing her, thanks in advance!

Main character = Masamichi Haru (VA Katsuji Mori)
Young girl = Minamo Aoi (VA Kanae Oki)
Guy with a split haircut = Eichiro Kushima (VA Keiji Fujiwara)
Angry bishounen = Sota Aoi (VA Hiroki Takahashi)
Older girl taking off helmet = Holon (VA Ayako Kawasumi)

Westlo 2008-03-29 08:11

Oh win I was hoping for Ayako Kawasumi, guess she will use something similar to her Kurau voice and I must've missed Keiji Fujiwara on the VA list when I was looking before, good to see him getting more roles, thanks again!

He's in a ton of stuff these days. Gundam and Baccano and new Birdy remake.

That blog said that
Spoiler:
Is it true?

Ryo.Massaki 2008-03-30 14:54

The trailer looks great. I have to say that i am a little bit dissapointed with Ghost Hound. Don't get me wrong, its a nice and solid series, but i was expecting something different from Shirow.
Real Drive looks and feels more like his other work, and i hope it has more Gits vibes than Ghost Hound.

The trailer says it :p

Yay, animation quality looks top-notch. And I also missed Fujiwara Keiji in that list before, it's nice to see here, considering he was my favorite male seiyuu last year.

Edgewalker 2008-03-30 23:31

Oh wow...this is a TV series right ? If this is the Animation quality were getting, it will be epic.

stormy001_M1A2 2008-03-31 00:20

No need to say more. IG and Shirow is winning formula for me. I will be waiting for it.

Jazzrat 2008-03-31 09:38

Looks very GitS (the first movie). They goin for the retro character design again? :)

RyougaElliot 2008-03-31 17:03

Oh my God. This looks absolutely gorgeous.

WOW.
