Please ask first if you want to use anything here (do not need to do that for renders, although I don't think anyone will want to take them anyway)

Newbie GIMP user:

Vector Preview's hiding place

I actually wanted to have a flashier title but just so I happen to remain nab 4ever or slack off, I didn't.

Anyway, I'm just starting to learn GIMP (actually, for quite a while but never get around to it), and it's a no brainer that I'm very nab at it right now.

Well, I couldn't find anything to start with so I began with a render... It's actually my first render using path tool in GIMP and some manual erasing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...ud00147we7.png

I rendered it from this one:
http://img253.imageshack.us/my.php?i...ud00147we7.jpg

Criticism, and suggestion for improvement are welcome. I think I erased the part near the tail too much. (and some parts look jaggy)

I actually wanted to create sigs but didn't know where to start, lol :heh: But I created a thread any way in hope to stop the loop of: "Going to learn tommorow", "going to learn at the end of the weekend", etc. Well, you can guess ...

KasumiGirl 2007-10-08 02:10

Considering this is your first render.
It is not bad.
Not bad at all. :)
I see some of the lines are missing...maybe you could fix that up..oh, scratch that..I actually just noticed that the original was missing lines. :heh:
Anyways. I think you did a good job~

Sephi 2007-10-08 07:54

Quite good for a first render. Since some part are missing a line i think the best thing is to just delete the small line at the hair that has a line. And the hair shape isn't as natural as the original one, and slightly pixelrated edges. But other than that. It's very nice for your first one.

And you even fixed the white thing near her ear ^.^

teachopvutru 2007-10-08 16:11

Second attempt at render...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...ud00147iv9.png

Jagged edges again... didn't see those while doing it though. And man, those one pixel-thin (I think) hair. ;_;

Rendered from: http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?i...ud00147iv9.jpg

The picture looks nice so I wanted to make a good render out of it... too bad I couldn't do it.

EDIT:

And lol, forgot to erase the part near the hair on top left...

Miko Miko 2007-10-09 11:41

Keep up the good work :D

teachopvutru 2007-10-09 15:39

Thanks for the encouragement, KasumiGirl, Sephi, and Miko Miko ^^

She is not from any show. Check out this thread to learn more about her. ;)

Warning; If you check that thread, you will instantly become a fan of Miku. Proceed with caution. :heh:

Tia>> DO IT GO TO THE THREAD and Become a Miku Hugger *.* :heh:

cute renders u have done man, Could I use one? I might use one cuz I was looking for some shana ones to make. ^___^

and TODAY ONLY if u become a Miku hugger I will make a sig for u =P

:heh:

EDIT:

Oh and advice for next time u save ur render. if u don't want to get noticable hard edges then try doin KiNa's Tutorial in the Sig/Ava Tutorial thread. Its on the first page.

I remember seeing that thread before, lol... But there wasn't much during that time so I forgot about it.

:heh:

Sure, you can but one Term of Condition: You can't blame me if my horrible render ruins your pic. :heh:

And lol, I would love to have a Miku pic but I already made a firm resolve to have a Shana sig now that Shana II is airing. It would be nice to have a Miku avvy though :heh:

EDIT:
lol.... too many emoticon of ----> :heh:

teachopvutru 2007-10-10 03:16

And....

Double Post!! :heh:

Anyway, 3rd attempt at rendering:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5.../070225ko7.png

Rendered from:

http://img159.imageshack.us/my.php?image=070225ko7.jpg

I think I've done a pretty good job on this render. I'm actually quite proud of it =P. Just learned a new method and it's faster (and more efficient) than making path + manual erasing. This one took about 1 hour and 10 minutes as oppose to the 1st and 2nd renders, which each took me about 2 hours...

Anyway, I won't be able to stay awake in class, lol... 4:20 AM ...

Ice Climbers 2007-10-10 03:31

4:20 AM? East Coaster huh :heh:

Well, not a bad render by any means, especially since the source picture is so small. I would just say that some lines are too thick, so maybe you might want to erase a little more. Other than that, nice renders. =]

Did I give you a cookie for opening your thread? No i dont think so :heh:

p.s. another miku-hugger is here :heh: so another person with the green haired girl in your thread

Sephi 2007-10-10 04:37

The render looks nice, but as icy pointed out, some of the outlines are really thick. And i would suggest feathering the edges of the flames a bit to make it less hard and more flame like. Will be a bit tricky at the hair tough :p

konstargirl 2007-10-11 06:20

Thats a really nice render. I can't really rnder like that like all the parts for some reason. ^^;

teachopvutru 2007-10-13 13:58

Revision to Render #3:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...o7Revision.png

I thinned the lines and feathered the flame edges. Either my eyes suck or I do not know how to feather since I can't see the difference to the flame... ;_;

Making the line thinner through manual erasing (sort of) was a pain, but I don't know how to redraw stuff.

EDIT:

Someone please point out what I did wrong for the feathering, lol... I just simply select all the flame with lasso tool and did Feather Selection...

Those renders are interesting, specially the third one, I like them, the second one is a bit strange in some way, I'm not too fond to that style of Shana (that's a personal opinion, but still...), maybe you should revise it, dontcha? Change the brightness style and color buff stuff.

PS: I think you should copy them all to the first post and under spoiler marks ^^

Oh, thank you. :) Problem is most of the tutorials are for Photoshop. But most of the time when I follow Photoshop tutorial, I can find the equivalent in GIMP (although sometime it's quite time-consuming) so I'll try.

I don't know how to edit image... All I know about GIMP are ... some stuff about extracting image, VERY basic knowledge of making gif, and Untouchable (below the nab) in the background knowledge of image editting and GIMP. That's precisely why I haven't start making sig yet. I have also tried a few random other stuffs but overall nothing significant.

And I can't do anything about the style of Shana, lol :heh: ... All I did was simply extracting her from the background of an image I find somewhere else.

Thanks for the advice about copying them to first post, I may or may not do it, though.

Anyway, my first three attempts at making gif a couple of months ago (dunno why I stopped immediately afterward):

#1: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...pvutru/Mai.gif

#2: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...u/Hinagiku.gif

#3: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...pvutru/Ayu.gif

As above, criticism is welcome. The 1st I think I didn't zoom in enough. The 2nd one's color doesn't look very good (after the process of optimizing). The 3rd one is not even AS safe but the motions look strange.

I can't find an image to practice rendering, and I don't know how to do sig so that's it for now I guess. :heh: (dam, I'm starting to lack off in my learning already :( )

teachopvutru 2007-11-10 00:01

Meh... Shana + Clannad + schoolwork + Ubuntu + forums make a deadly combo ._.

Anyway... back to learning after... nearly 1 month lol <.<

bigdave 2007-11-10 17:28
