VLC media playback problems

I am currently using VLC media player 0.7.0 when watching my films that i download (xvid,avi etc) ,but when i try to watch most of these films i get jewrkiness & sticky playback & it is so annoying.I have tried the updated versions of Vlc media player but they seem to be worse.Is there anything i can do to solve this problem of jerkiness & sticky playback?

You mean jerkiness as in:
Not being able to effectively "rewind" with the "rewind" key
Only being able to change position is basically 0:30-1:00 intervals
When changing positions you get a screen that seems like you have corrupted video/bad codecs

I think it's the program. I have the same issue, hasn't changed even when I put it on a higher end PC.
