Blu-Ray Freeware

My laptop came with a blu-ray burner, so it has the ability on the hardware end to read blu-ray discs (it shows up on my computer drives in D:\). However, in terms of reading it, I'm stuck (the original program that came installed was lost after many re-formats and changing hard drives). Does anyone know of any freeware that will actually play the new discs. Paid software is also acceptable, just so long as it's reliable.

PowerDVD plays BD discs, but it'll cost you 40 bucks.

Otherwise you can play BD movies with Media Player Classic, but seems a bit more complicated.

Your link includes a very important caveat:

Please note that you need to decrypt your files first using software like AnyDVD HD.
So that's not a free solution either. AnyDVD HD costs 79 euro for a two-year subscription.

OP: Bottom line: you're not going to find any free software to play Blu-rays.

Check if your OEM provides free download of the software on their website.

MakeMKV Beta is free. Crossplatform too if you are concerned about stuff like that.

btw, the original program you had might be available for you for free from the manufacturer website.

From http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1053:

As stated on a main page all features of MakeMKV are free while the program is in beta. You may purchase the full activation key if you like the program and want to show your support, but you also may use the temporary beta key [which is] valid until December 2010. [emphasis mine]
So no guarantees it will remain free. I guess the AACS and BD+ technologies are now hopelessly broken, though, if there are free solutions?

It has long been known how to decrypt AACS and BD+, but at least in the AACS case they can just switch MKB's (which they do every other month or so). Open sores coders are v lazy so most of the newer MKB's aren't publicly known yet. Buying AnyDVD HD is a good idea if you actually plan on ripping blurays since that's the only program that is actually updated within a new MKB being discovered.
