It's been a while since I started a manga thread...

It's a fantasy story set in a world where the only major source of light is a man-made sun above the central capital city. The story, for now at least, follows the path of a young boy whose dream, after a certain dramatic event in his youth, was to become a "Letter Bee," a sort of a glorified mailman in this dangerous world (and yes, they call their headquarter a "beehive"). Said dramatic event involved a certain Letter Bee by the name of Gauche, who saved his life and changed his way of thinking, technically because the boy was a "letter," and someone has had him sent to a new, caring home, a job waiting for a skilled Letter Bee to take on. At the end of their dangerous journey to the boy's destination, Gauche acknowledged their friendship, and the awed Lag decided from then on to follow the path of his savior and idol.
Oh, and there's a lot of talk about the "heart" in this series, and our boy Lag can literally shoot out a "heart bullet" to receive visions of the "heart" of people; that is, their true feelings and memories -- it can hit people, letters (obvious), a church bell, and a lot of other stuff and create a bunch of big screen TV's (:p) that allow Lag and everyone around the vicinity to witness these feelings.
Spoiler for Space saver: because not everybody wants to read me rant:
Doesn't sound too interesting? Just another confusing fantasy world with its stupid Engrish terminology? So, why should you care and read it along with me?
Well, first of all, the art. It's not...unique, in a highly distinguishable sense per se, but this is one very beautifully drawn manga. The art style is reminiscent of the anime Last Exile, which I confess I think is only good for its art and concept. The world is always drawn with deep and satisfying detail, combining European Medieval architecture with an occasional hint of steampunk; the characters are all pretty and pleasant to look at, although they're not averse to making funny faces for a while.
Second, the characters. None of them really broke new grounds in the manga Hall of Fame or anything like that. There's no Harima, or Morita-senpai, or someone as unique running around. But that doesn't mean they lack life. First, the lead boy is a good kid, smart enough in his head and good with his hands, though his really good point is the heart. Yes, yes, you've heard it all before, "shonen lead with a heart, what's new?" Well, this one isn't annoying in the least. He's not spouting stupid lines of friendship every other page, he's not jumping blindly into action because he's the shonen lead and can't ever die: he's learning about the world like a kid his age on an adventure would; oh, and he's a bit of a crybaby, which is kinda cute.
And there's a little girl tagging along with him, named "Niche," and called herself his "dingo," which stands for a Letter Bee's partner in the manga's terminology. She's like a younger shorter Yami from To-LOVE-Ru (super dangerous long hair, loli body structure, and a bit of an attitude, although of a different kind) with furry paws-for-hand. She's not quite human, very powerful in fact, and some characters treat her as a creature, but she certainly likes our boy. Not surprising, considering he was the first person in the world (probably) to treat her nicely and even risked his life to save hers.
To round out the cast, there's the little sister of Gauche the mysterious ace Letter Bee, who's a bit like him in that they both are crybabies and they like Gauche very much, one as a big brother/only family and another as the elusive idol. She's obviously something of a love interest here. There's also some fellow friendly Letter Bee's, who become Lag's friends; some older adults who work in the headquarters; and of course Gauche himself, a cool and talented guy, but his fate is so far a mysterious and very important plot point...
Finally there's the plot. I won't say much on this one, but let's just say that it's quite excellent. The pace develops quite nicely, never faltering but also never rushing ahead. The mysteries are big -- this isn't the nicest of worlds, the government is a bit oppressive, but the so far mysterious anti-government factions aren't very nice either. And the characters have yet to act outright stupidly on any occasion.
P.S. The scanlation effort on this series is quite wonderfully regular for a series that isn't the biggest latest thing coming out of Japan. It's a monthly series, started only in 2007...and as much as 19 chapters are scanlated! Good job, scanlators! And of course good job mangaka!
Short version: an excellent and very promising fantasy series with good art, good characters, and good plot. I heartily recommend this one! :)

I'm all for Lag X Niche, furry ftw. :heh: Guess it wouldn't be bad if he ends up with the other girl, but Niche deserves to be loved too! He could end up with both girls as well... ;)

Just finished reading all 28 chapters, and this one of the best mangas out in Jump SQ at the moment. Plot is surprising original, atleast compared much of the stuff I've read lately. I'm looking forward to how the anime adapation will handle much of atmostsphere.

Spoiler for I don't know:
Sylvette seems to have a higher chance at this point since Niche would out live him.

Do any of you know whether Hiroyuki Asada has been taking a break, the manga has been put on hold or interrupted by the editor? I'm asking because I can't find any new chapters after number 30 came out in June and this manga is one of my favorites. The story has that fairy tail touch into it that captures your attention and moves you from the very beginning.

One of JAC's staff stated that he is taking a break and plans resume by the end of this month.

Well the anime is coming out soon. The art style is very similar to Claymore, but I think the storyline is really beautiful. It has that kind of post-apocalyptic feel laced with dubious hope, and peppered with jokes once it becomes too emotional.
Though I wish the mutant boar had a more normal name. Or maybe pet boars in anime are supposed to have weird names (remember Botan, anyone?).

It's not a chapter from the manga, it's the one shot animated.

New Chapter is out!
Spoiler for Ch.33:
Well, Garrad continues to show how of an ass he is though it was amusing that Aria got demoted too.:heh: Hopefully Largo actually has plan and instead just goofing off.=/
Lag seems have gotten in quite a bit of trouble however.

Wow that was fast, yay for chapter 33!
Spoiler for Chapter 33:
Well it turns out that the cold letter department is the place where letters that have problems (can't be sent, won't be received, ect) go and both Aria and Lag have been demoted to work down there. So we might have a "letter of the month" arc now, this current one is a little odd, and I really hope it doesn't fall into letter of the month routine. Hopefully we'll get some juicy information with each chapter as well.
Non-spoilery comment: Was it just me or did the pacing feel a bit off/rough in this chapter? Almost felt as if the original idea for the chapter wasn't long enough so part of the next chapter got tagged on. Also I believe that the anime will stop just before this arc, anyone else have an opinion on that?

I expect next chapter slightly episodic, but no more than what we had before like with the "Lighthouse" and "Picture Letter" chapters. I don't think we have worry about "letter of month".

Eh, I'm not sure what you mean. Maybe you feel that way because the situation wasn't resolved in one chapter this time as it normal is? We did covered the aftermath of the last and start of a new mini arc.
I agree that Anime will probably end before this arc provided it doesn't go it's own route. Last arc is actually decent place to end the show since it takes care of one of the major plot threads.

I meant odd pacing as in we kinda cleared up that mini-arc involving the inspectors and then kinda launched into a new mini arc. They felt a little too disjointed, a little too separate to flow well in this chapter, all IMO of course.

Ah, I see. Well, I don't count the issue with investigators over with, it's more at this point Lag and co. are in a bind since they can't do anything about them atm. This doesn't mean they still don't have work to do and we don't know arc well play out. It end up like the "Lighthouse" chapter when Lag met Jiggy Pepper for first time.

This manga is absolute gem!! Loving every chapter and characters.
It is a really good read, but at the same time I sort of have this feeling that I should have waited till in ends (given it's pace maybe 2-3 years lol) because it is absolute torture that this is on monthly release and at the same time riddled with cliff hangers. Anyways, I'm hooked and can't till the next chapter.

Chapter 34 is out!
Spoiler for read the chapter first please!:
I do wonder if Lag is overstepping his boundaries as a letter bee at times with the way he gets really involved with the clients life (which I remember that Gauche said was what you weren't supposed to do) but honestly I like him better for it. Plus I can't see Aria getting annoyed at him now that they're in the cold letter division, if it takes that extra effort to get those letters delivered then go for it!
Also think that we won't see EVERY letter down there get delivered or even most of them (please no anyway, that looked like a lot) I think we'll have a few more chapters focusing on those letters and then will get back into the main swing of thing, heck, maybe by this time next year we'll see the inside of Akatsuki.
