Higurashi licensed by Geneon (June 2011: license expired)

Spoiler for obsolete:

Update June 2011: Funimation has indicated it will not license further seasons of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and will let the existing license expire. This series is therefore no longer considered licensed by AnimeSuki.

Higurashi is one of the only two anime shows not yet out on R1 DVD that I can say without a doubt that I'm going to buy the day that it comes out. (the other one being Nanoha... Code Geass and HXH are also pretty likely, but I want to make sure that the former doesn't go downhill first, and I'd want to wait until the boxes are out or until its clear that they're not coming out for a 60+ episode long series, not to mention that I didn't care much for the pre-first exam episodes) Easily my favorite anime of 2006, and one of my favorites overall.

The first hint: Based off a PC game.

Higurashi is looking more and more likely.

Well
Now the chances of an official release of the sound novels and the PS2 port in english raised from 0,00000001% to 0,1% :heh: :heh: :heh:

If it comes with some kind of extras I'd buy it for sure...

Second hint: "Summer '83, it wasn't quite summer of '69, but for some, it was still the most memorable summer of their short lives." I think it is obvious that it is Higurashi now.

What happened in 1969? We landed on the moon, and the Vietnam War was still on going. I don't know of any mass murders in 1969. What does 1969 have to do with Higurashi?

Klashikari 2007-03-03 12:35

as for the 1969 mention, it is supposed to be a "memorable summer", not something around mass murder.
meh, let's see how they will take care of the licence...

I think ANN was trying to sneak in a crack at the old Bryan Adams song "Summer of '69" when mentioning the time period that the show was set.

Aya Reiko 2007-03-03 12:50

In any case, the "Summer of '69" reference is a red herring.

Higurashi takes place in June 1983.

Well, anime news network is running their "Guess the Geneon license" game. That's where the Summer of 83 clue and the based on a game clue are from.

I actually guessed Nanoha after the first clue (based on a game) because they've also recently registered the Nanoha domain.

FatPianoBoy 2007-03-03 12:51

'69 was also the first Woodstock ;)

Crap, if Higurashi does get licensed, my wallet's gonna be screaming bloody murder (lol) after buying a bunch of games, a guitar, and preordering Haruhi

Kaioshin Sama 2007-03-03 12:56

It's almost a 99.9% chance now with the 2nd clue its Higurashi. At least we won't have to worry about Casey and Friends every being a possibility.

SpaceDrake 2007-03-03 13:15

Man, isn't this going to be fairly major? It's like Tsukihime, it's gone from obscure doujin title to TV broadcast to American distribution. Between this and the really impressive performance of the PS2 release of Higurashi in its first week, Ryukishi07 has to be dancing on cloud nine right now, Higurashi's proving it has legs.

Of course, anyone who watched the fansubs needs to purchase the DVDs. This show, moreso than many others, deserves support.

Village Idiot 2007-03-03 13:21

Buy the DVDs! And we might in a long shot get the game translated as well.

tobiast88 2007-03-03 20:28

To hell with the savings! Must - buy - Higurashi!! If there is the slightest chance we can get the games here, I'll pay and make my friends buy too.

frad113 2007-03-03 21:26

Let's just hope that the second season doesn't get licensed [yet].

Yay!.......Higurahi getting licensed sort of seemed inevitable to me. I really hope that the series will garner a significanly confused group fo people after episode 4 (after watching episode 5 they'll be saying WTF! THEY DIED), that way I can say "HAHAHA...Don't mess with Oyashiro-sama".

FireChick 2007-03-04 18:29

HIGURASHI IS LICENSED!!!!! I know it! You know the 2nd Geneon license contest? Well they fixed the 4th clue link and look at what the clue is on ANN!!! It's DEFINITELY Higurashi! Why?! Hello?! Satsuki Yukino? She does the Sonozaki sisters Mion and Shion and they kill each other! That ring a bell? Huh?! I'm sooooooo gonna send Geneon my answer for this!!! But I don't remember my mailing address and I asked my mom for it but she won't let me have it. Guess I'll have to ask my dad for it then.
