You could look at the spoilers section, but basically...
Yukito just wished for Mizusu not to die(?) He only lessened it but it costed his life and he took the form of a crow. The scar he yelled in pain from was of his past life, since he is the reincarnated form of his ancestor. If you watched the other episode you'll see that the guy that looks like yukito received a wound in the back after obeying an order not to kill. The crow explodes into Yukito since it is yukito adn the doll symbolizes his love(?) for Misuzu and he shows her that he is always by her side :confused: . Meh that's what I thought it meant anyway >_> There aere more through analysis-es in other threads

Maybe it's just me, but gao sounds a lot like goal(at least the way Misuzi says those words). I was thinking "gao" was supposed to be representative of Misuzu trying to reach goals but falling short.
I guess the best way to explain it would be this:
Every time she screws up, she says "gao," which to me sounds a lot like goal, except sort of cut off or shortened. In the end, when she does finally achieve what she wanted, she is finally able to say "goal" instead of falling short and saying gao. Another aspect of this theory is that as the story progresses, she says gao less and less(even Haruko mentions this). This seems to fall in line with her getting ever closer to reaching her goals.
I was just wondering if gao was only supposed to be a cute little word to add entertainment value to the character, or if it actually had a deeper meaning like I explained above.
Sorry, if this seems stupid. I've been up since 1AM, so I'm really out of it, and I've only just finished the series a few days ago, so I've got a lot of dumb questions in my head.
btw, this is the only anime that ever made me seriously upset. At least 3 times I really cried, and there were plenty of misty-eyed moments. Suprisingly, it was the psuedo-happy moments that occured during/after the sad events that made me burst into tears. Maybe I'm becoming a woman, but damn this show really got the tears flowing, and I actually like the anime a lot because of that fact. :) It's a real testament to the quality of the story and execution of the show. Most forms of fiction, anything from books to movies, don't draw me in enough to make me truely care about the characters, but this show hit the mark.
Between Air and Shuffle, I'm beginning to think that H-game plots are better than big budget movies! :heh:

"gao" is actually a Japanese word that correspond to the sound made by intimidating creatures (ex. dinosaur, dragons, godzilla, monster, etc.). [is it?]
Like in english
rustle = leaves making noise
pitter patter = sound of the raindrop
etc.
gao = Grrraa... or growl (imagine a dragon or dinosaur growling)

ok thanks for clearing that up. I had never heard gao before, so I assumed it was a funny word that Misuzu had made up(hence why Haruko wanted her to stop saying it), and as such, kind of expected it to mean something important.

There is a relevance between her love for dinosaurs and her habit of saying "Gao". I remember Haruka saying to Yukito the reason behind Misuzu saying Gao was her affection for dinosaurs and she always thought they said Gao, so she imitates them in a sense.
Just another perspective shed upon this matter.

Hey Creep,
living in the U.S. is no excuse for not seeing Air TV. You are seriously missing out if you have not seen Air. The entire series (and the movie) have been fansubbed.
It is one of the best anime series around. Get it or regret it!
If you have emule or edonkey search for "[KOI] Air TV."
Better yet, use a bittorrent client.
There's only 12 episodes + a recap. Check it out or else....
There's also two "summer special" episodes if you enjoy the series.
Don't just leave it at an answer (Sora the crow) to a trivia question....

1. well obviously you can tell the artist for the movie was different. i can guess they were probably closer to the artists from the original game. Apparently they got different people to do it. hmm i dont know details but yea ;) i am sure someone else can answer this...
2. this is still hazy to me, i want to write something, but its going to be totally off. lets just say, he does change into a crow because he wants to help misuzu. ;) the reasons why, again i leave to someone else.
3. you do? you see an older one? where? i did not catch this at all..if you are talking near the end, at the fair maybe your eyes are mistaken and really they are the same age..then again its been a while since i saw the movie, i am probably wrong.
4. we presume Yes, they dont actually exchange DIRECT words like "I love you" but you can get the general idea of it. ;)

-Well... To tell you the truth, Air the Movie was an alternate story to Air since you can't squeeze all the stories into 90 minutes movie anyway. Air the movie was used as a big promotion to Air Series.
Other than that, Movie has differrent characters designer, and is a new interpretation to Air series by Ozaki Desamu. The director. What hurt me at most is he changed Kanna's part story and putting it to nothing but a soap opera. Ugh... I hate how he put it in that row. There are MANY plotholes there.
2) In the series, Why does Yukito turn into the crow?
-To save Misuzu's life and with these wings, he can fly to the girl in the sky and ACTUALLY help her. Not just kept trying to help one part of her like Misuzu, but Kanna herself.
3) In the movie Why do you see small Michiru and older Michiru?
-There are? I seen only Michiru and Minagi after watched it.
4) Does Yukito fall in love with the girl in the series?
-He already fell in love with Misuzu.

I just watched the movie again last night so it's still fresh in my head.
Fortunately it was after reading your question so I played "spot the cameos."
I saw Michiru three times. Once atop a playground jungle jim blowing bubbles. Shortly afterwards in a crowd of kids watching Yukito's puppet show. Then towards the end during the festival where Minagi and Kano also briefly appear. None of them had any speaking role however. Michiru might look younger in context early on in the movie but I think it's all in your head unless you spotted another Micheru that I didn't notice.
The other notable cameo was Poteto of course. He appeared on a television set that Misuzu was watching (the "Adventures of Poteto" anime, perhaps). An obvious reference to Air TV.
I found it kinda funny that before Poteto appears Yukito says "piko piko" during his puppet show.
And I watched for any Kanon cameos as well but to no avail. Ayu, Makoto and Nayuki appeared in Air TV for a blink of an eye. They looked a little older in Air than they did in Kanon, of course Kanon was a few years earlier!
I agree completely with Rugal's characterization of the Movie. Rugal, your many Air posts in this forum have been great and have deepened my appreciation for this wonderful series. I first stumbled across Air TV and the Air movie a few months ago on a WinAmp stream. Thanks to bittorrent and Koi I have my own fansubbed copy of Air. I love this show! If there was an official subtitled DVD (no dubs please) I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Same for the Key games. But it may never happen, huh?

Ok, At the jungle gym area, you see michiru and the girl by the swings and rounger michiru in the crowd of kids. This happens when Yukito is doing a puppet show for all the kids.
More quesitons:
1) I'm so confused with the Yukito-Sora thing. What happens in the series after Misuzu dies? Where does Sora go? This is a question towards both the series and the movie.
2) So either way Sora fails to do fulfill his purpose? I mean, she dies either way....
3) After Sora turns into a bird, does time go back?
4) I don't get the Old story they keep telling over and over again. In the movie, the old story is totally different from the story told from the summers special/series. I mean, in one story the winged girl confesses love, but in the other, she just kisses her gaurdian and tries to fly away.
5) Isn't Yukito kind of too old for Misuzu?
6) In the old story, wasn't that Uraha lady suppose to have a affair to bring back the winged girl? I don't get that.
7) You know the people in the town? Well, are their situations connected to Misuzu's? Like that girl in the purple hair with that posessing feather?

ok i'll try and answer what i can, but most of this is still open to interpretation.
1)Misuzu dies and her soul returns to the sky but this time with happy memories she got from having spent the time with her mother. There's a bit more to it though. There's debate as to whether or not the two kids seen in the ending were yukito and misuzu reincarnated.
2)Sora/Yukito's purpose was to find the girl and give her happy memories so he did that by letting her spend time with her mother. (Yukito becomes sora, misuzu gets more time to live.
3)got me there. This was confusing. I think they just do a recap because it didn't erase yukito from her life. She just thought he went away.
4)The movie is a bit different from the anime. Treat them as two different entities.
5)Yes he is. Yukito san wa hentai!!!
6)Uraha and Soldier boy married so that their offspring could continue on their quest to find and bring happiness to the winged girl. They didn't know where she was trapped, only that she was trapped in the sky. But since neither one was immortal they did what they could. Have kids and pass the tale down in hopes that someone from their line might find and rescue her.
7)They're connected to Misuzu in the sense that their troubles/situations were caused by Kanna's feathers which carried magic power. Since Misuzu was Kanna's reincarnation they were connected like that.
Hope that helped. If you search around the forum you'll find better explanations. The series is a mind bender though.

I rewatched the series over 4 times already, and tried to understand to the best of my abilities (which are very limited, mainly because I'm a sucker for understanding -_-) I interpreted and interpreted but still cannot find an answer.
So here is my question. As far as we see, everyone in the series thus far are there for a reason. Everyone has a reference, a meaning. And those of the present are someohow related to those in the past. Each of the girl that Yukito encountered has something to do with the past. Kano is the reincarnation of Shiraho, Misuzu of Kanna, etc... So what role did Minagi play in the "past" arc? And what reference of Uraha is made in the future???? It is possible that she portrays the image of Yukito's mother, but I am still not sure...

I'm not so sure that Kano is a reincarnation. But...
Kano: the freeplanetling.
When she touched the feather (Kanna's feathers possess [sad] memories) as a child, perhaps the sad memory was passed to her. Like the infant in the flashback, Kano had lost her mother as a child. So maybe she was sensitive to that memory -- the separation of a mother and daughter by death. Recall that Yukito felt nostalgic and sad when he encountered the feather that Kano had touched. The magic feather, Yukito's power and Kano's wish made it possible for her to meet and thank her mother as Yukito had suggested she do. This helped resolve her sorrow and guilt over the loss of her mother and I suppose the feather was returned to Kanna with the happy memory Kano experienced by meeting her mother.
Recall also that the bruise on Kano's wrist disappeared with the feather. The child had the bruise, yet Kano was reciting the words of the mother. So she had a connection to both mother and child from the memory.
As to Minagi, well, she's Minagi, not a reincarnation of someone else.
Minagi and Micheru (the buttshaking-ling).
I think Minagi was a bit of a plot device to get Yukito (and us) to realize that the "girl in the sky" was more than just a folk tale or legend. Michiru, Minagi's sister who died before birth, meets the Kanna, the girl in the sky and borrows one of her feathers which enables her to come to Earth as a "dream," in order to comfort Minagi and reconcile Minagi with her mother, emotionally broken by the loss of Michiru.
Michiru's companionship helps Minagi through the difficult time with her mother; Yukito steers Minagi back home where Minagi and her mother are reunited as a family. In the end the mother finally sees Minagi as herself rather than her dead child. Before she leaves (the dream comes to an end), Michiru gets to finally meet her own mother; another happy memory to bring to Kanna when she returns the feather.
So really neither Kano nor Minagi or Michiru played a role in the past (Summer Arc). Neither did Yukito, Misuzu or Haruko for that matter.
Misuzu dreams of Kanna, she is not Kanna herself. She is one of Kanna's dreams, she is part of Kanna, but not all of Kanna. A winged being's essence cannot fully fit into a human being. Like the water of the ocean, it cannot fit into a teacup without shattering it.
Likewise, Yukito is not Ryuuyu, but he does carry on his will. He is descended from Ryuuyu and Uraha, separated by 1000 years. He inherits Ryuuyu's will (to find and save Kanna) and Uraha's power (magic and the doll with generations of unfufilled wishes which will ultimately be used to help Misuzu save Kanna).
Why did I mention Haruko, Misuzu's substitute mother? There's a similar theme between the Summer and Air arcs. Kanna wished to be reunited with her mother, Misuzu has a similar wish: to experience happy memories with her mother. The goal which has taken 1000 summers to finally reach.
When Yukito has an attack in the hallway and is wounded, later to discover a scar just like Ryuuyu's suggests Yukito suggested to me that Yukito has passed the point of no return. He's experiencing the curse that his mother warned him about
: caring about the girl will cause both he and the girl to die. Misuzu's dreams are having a physical effect on both Yukito and Misuzu.
The common theme:
Memories and the mother-child relationship. Families stick together.
Each of the girls in the series, Kano, Minagi, Kanna and Misuzu were separated from their mothers either by death or by circumstance. The goal and wish for each of them is to reconcile that loss. Sad memories hold us back, happy memories give us hope and keep us going. But we cannot live on memories alone.
Each of these girls, even Michiru to some extent, resolve that mother-daughter separation and the guilt or sadness associated with it.
Kano meets and thanks her mother. Kano had felt guilty about her mother's death and accepted part of the blame as the reason for her mother's death. Until Yukito set her straight, Kano had wished to apologize (for having been born) rather than thank her mother. Good advice, Yukito!
Minagi is able to reach her mother and be recognized as herself rather than her dead sister. She had accepted her mother's condition the result of her sin: wishing for a younger sister who unfortunately died before birth. She then lived as a fragment of her mother's dream, taking on the role of Michiru, whose death devastated her mother. That dream had to end to bring Minagi and her mother together.
Misuzu lost her mother as a child and was taken in by her aunt Haruko. The two remained somewhat distant in part because Haruko feared losing Misuzu to her natural father, and Misuzu kept her distance because affection resulted in fits and pain. They overcame these obstacles and became close in the end. Haruko ultimately would have lost Misuzu no matter what she did anyway - the least they could do was to create some happy memories.
Yukito guided each of the girls to their respective goals, but ultimately each had to resolve the obstacles on their own to find happiness. Such is life.
All of these happy memories were returned to Kanna who was all alone in the sky.
Finally a word about Sora the crow.
As tragic as it is that Yukito seems to have run away and abandoned Misuzu when she really needed him and cared for him, he did the right thing. He'd gone as far as the two could go with the way things were. Had Yukito stayed as the freeloader at the Kamio house, Misuzu would have died without reaching her goal. Yukito may have lived on, or he may have died within a year anyway, like his ancestor Ryuuyu had 1000 years earlier. This would have solved nothing.
Instead, like his mother before him, he placed his heart, his wish, into the doll while he still had power, while he was still strong. His wish was to be by Misuzu's side forever and to help her reach her goal, and to save the girl in the sky, Kanna, fufilling Ryuuyu's 1000 year old wish. In the final three episodes Yukito, as Sora
rarely leaves Misuzu's side. He intervenes when Haruko tosses away Misuzu's birthday gift, the baby dinosaur, and alerts Haruko to its presence at the temple towards the end. Misuzu tries her best to reach the dinosaur and succeeds, a rehearsal perhaps for reaching her ultimate goal.
But why a crow? Haruko's (some say corny) speech at the end should give us a clue. Humans cannot fly in the sky, but birds can. After Misuzu reaches her goal, Sora flies away to find the girl in the sky who's still alone to bring her back for a new beginning.
What is the use of wings which cannot flap nor fly?
It's to remind us of those happy memories from when we could fly.
What is the use of friends or family who ultimately die or leave?
The happy memories they leave behind.
I think Uraha is like you said, the mother of misuzu. This again brings up a question about Yukito being Uraha's companion..... Uraha is not Misuzu's mother. They aren't even related.
Ryuuyu, not Yukito, was Uraha's companion. Their bond to Kanna was as a family. They would do anything, even give their own lives for Kanna's happiness.
Yukito turned into a crow but he never left Misuzu. He's in every scene from his transformation until the end.
Don't confuse the series with the movie. Similar themes but different story. The movie jettisoned a lot of the mystical elements that were in the series other than the legend (soap opera) of Kanna and Ryuuyu and...
the bit at the end where Yukito's doll leads him to Misuzu and then bounces into a feather and disapears. The connection between Kanna and Misuzu, Yukito and Ryuuyu is more thematic than literal in the movie. At least that's how I saw it.
I enjoyed both the series and the movie, but the series is far superior in my view.
I hope this was helpful to someone even though it was a bit long-winded.
