Mahou Shonen: How would it work?

I have a question, how would a mahou Shonen anime work? I know how a Mahou Shoujo anime works (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), but how would a magical boy anime work?

Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka? (how a zombie boy transforms into a frilly pink costume).

MeoTwister5 2012-05-09 20:54

For Mahou Shoujo you need to watch more than just Madoka.

For Mahou Shonen... uh... Dog Days?

nope, although that anime is for the shonen demographics but it doesn't exactly feature a manly character.

I know sailor moon, and other pre madoka mahou shoujo anime.

It would be Nanoha Force. Wait, that's not a good example. Actually, it's not even good. Scratch!

Mahou Shounen isn't exactly a manly profession either, it involves a whole lot of letting the girls do the heavy lifting while you sit in the corner... >.>

Anyway, for most Mahou Shoujo series, there's always that one guy; Syaoran from CCS, Ikuto from Shugo Chara, Chrono from Nanoha, that weird guy from Sailor Moon that-I-can't-remember-because-I-never-watched-it.

Just picture them in a leading role... Somehow...

Mahou Shonen: How would it work?

Bring on a bishounen with awesome staff battling cute (hot) evil girls tryning to take over the world, and you'll find the best Mahou Shonen anime that both men and women would love to see.

erneiz_hyde 2012-05-09 21:03

Saint Seiya Omega perhaps?

The only way this would work is with a Satire protagonist, because I can't see any guy having what it takes to do or say the things a regular mahou shoujo has to :heh:

Or inversely, you can have an evil protagonist dealing with cute (hot) good girls... Hmmm...

that weird guy from Sailor Moon
Tuxedo Mask? :heh: (Sailor Moon was part of the anime series broadcast here during my childhood, and is currently airing on the same channel in the present.)

I think the OP is talking about a serious, dark and gritty Mahou Shounen series, which is not a parody like Koreha Zombie Desuka.

The closest thing we have to that is KIBA.

The only thing I can think of is Naruto because of the seals, skills, spell and summon they release against their enemies.

ohmygodIknowright :hyper-^v^: ?

But too bad it doesn't sound like something we can market to the mahou shoujo crowd...

There's a number of shounen action series that are dark and gritty by default, all you'll be adding in is a transformation scene =_=

That's why a Mahou Shounen series have to be absolutely light hearted and Satire to throw the guy in a situation no man should find himself in :p

Marcus H. 2012-05-09 21:29

Koreha Zombie Desuka is still a parody, though.

I'd like to have something that is playing the Mahou Shounen card straight.
Pretty Cure GAR Extreme, anyone?

Marcus, you are correct. Of course I would love to reconstruct the mahou shoujo/shonen series in terms of emotions (madoka).

I would think if a pairing of a mahou shoujo and a mahou shonen would be interesting....
I could guess a major plot point of it would be the beast inside the boys heart showing itself to protect the thing which he loves, and to allow the thing he loves to protect him back or something like that. Perhaps a better term the beast inside his heart being forcefully pulled out and the beast being turned into the source of his/her power.

I could imagine that anime would be quite a tragic one especially in terms of the Romance. Fate saying "They must be together" and Reality saying "no, they can never be". But I guess Fate always wins.
