...Ok, I'm just gonna go ahead and put this all in spoilers, just in case.

Ok, just to start off, I've always hated it when people randomly come into a forum or place to talk about a specific anime and just say that they hate it, or list the reasons why it's inferior. You know, those kinds of things where you feel that if someone hates the show that much, why are they talking about it? Why are they in a place to discuss the show they proclaim hatred towards? I'd like to say I'm not one of those people, but I may come off as such in this, so.... Yeah. Just putting that out there.

I cannot speak Japanese, therefore, most of what's happened in the last 10 or so episodes has flown over my head, leaving me with only the basic plot points from the little (and I mean insanely little) bits of speech I can pick up, and of course, the pictures. So maybe this episode's dialogue would've won me over. Maybe these past ten episodes could have completely blown me out of the water. But quite frankly, I seriously, seriously doubt the dialogue could change my opinion of this show now. It's a twenty-six episode series that started off with about 6 episodes of action/comedy/romance that kicked arse. Then it moved almost exclusively to random comedy, with some brief (very brief) exceptions. Episodes 23 and 24, for instance. Those were good, especially 24's ending. To this, I pose one question:

Wtf happened?

This series had all the makings of an epic for me. A class full of hot chicks, a prodigy teacher with magical powers, a little evil vampire girl with a robot hench-person... It could have been amazing! And all this while, I held out hope. I kept on just hoping that they could bring that back for the past 20 or so weeks. That feeling where you go from laughing at the chupacabra club to cheering for the giant sword pactio to wondering who Negi's gonna smooch next. And around 23 and 24, I thought, "they might actually do it." But no. The last two episodes to an anime series that started off so phenomenally seemed to me to be primarily dedicated to minor characters and random, pointless humor.

Don't get me wrong. I love me some random pointless humor (FMP Fummoffu pwns all, just to put that out there.) But there's a time when you want random, pontless humor, and there's a time when you don't. There's a time when you want to see the head of the basket ball club put together a model kit space ship while a ninja mourns her future, and there's a time when you want to see some girls with immensely disproportionate weapons duke it out. Guess which one I wanted in the ending of this series.

I think after episode 25, I knew that all hope for a decently action-ish ending had died. A creeping sensation of inevitable disappointment, that I just shoved to the back of my head thinking "no, they can still pull it off. They can do this." And I was reassured, my confidence was bolstered, when I clicked on this episodes icon and saw that it's animation quality was, at first, almost as good as it had been in the first episodes. That pleased me. But as I watched, I felt the disappointment well up inside me... Where was the action? Where was the coolness? Where were the weapons as disporportionate to the girl's body size as the size of her breasts? I wanted to click to the end, but I kept telling myself, no, no, they can pull it off... They can still put in that one last fight scene... They still have time...

And then it happened! Negi started running, bursting through the foliage in a dramatic dash to find his long lost father... And then I looked at how much time was left in the episode. They couldn't make it. And then I knew, fully and consciously, that this series was doomed to me. I watched as all the pactios disperesed and Negi's father turned out to be some odd sort of illusion created by the frog and the... wtf is that white thing? Those things... Oh, when they came in, that's when everything started to go wrong... So I watched through the last credits, and I saw the ending where all the classmates are in Wales. What they're doing, I dunno, but I like Makie's gymnastics.... And the picture at the end taken almost directly from the first few pages of the Negima manga... And I just felt that I had to go and post my feelings on this.

This series was, at first, my favorite of the new series to come out this Fall. And it has ended as my least favorite. Seldom has an anime disappointed me this much... I feel very very sad right now.

Just for the record: By no means do I have a problem with anyone who liked this. They can probably understand the humor better than I can, or just have a better sense of it than I do, or maybe they just didn't tune into see an action series... Be that the case, then fanaticism about this episode is completely understandable. But for me, who came in looking for a fast paced fight scene with subtle, underlying humor, this episode, this ending, and what happened to this series, is all very, very painful.

P.S. Nice post Azure22! I believe those who have expected some form of plot will agree with your overall assessment of the series. Those that didn't expect much from the show, well, they extracted whatever was given which, in a nutshell, is nothing. :)

So, monir, in essence you're saying it was a Seinfeld ... a show about "nothing" :)

I think I can just let other people give their final two cents mostly.... but okay.. that Zazie eyecatch is just wierd..........

That adaptation is quite disturbing for me.
To put so much money (comparing to some ninja anime) for such a little result is difficult to understand for me ...

But as a Yue-Fan, I really enjoyed the two episodes which were dedicated to her.
They were also part of the few serious one, asking myself if the director isn't a Yue-fan himself for sparing her too much randomness... :heh:
With the Natsu OVA, I somehow feel she had received a special treatment comparing to "Shikoku" Makie (which is one of the most beloved characters in the manga polls).

Btw, I don't believe that the show has much production value. The entire series is comprised of loads of static images in 1 dimensional drawing and hardly any animated movements. The coloring/shadowing makes the drawing appears pretty stylistic, but even that particular aspect of the show wasn't consistent. There are several episodes where the drawing just looks atrocious. There are also not much lip synching as it is very noticeable when a character speak. The camera won't focus on the face. The face will be either sideways, or entirely off screen while you hear a character speaks. If I may exaggerate a bit, I think if 10 people buy 10 sets for the entire series, it probably would cover the cost of animating this series (barring the background music). :p

You aren't the only person to notice this, and, honestly, it's becoming somewhat of a theme in Shinbo's shows (make no mistake, I love Shinbo, but his emphasis on plot and the animation he ends up with are not the reasons why). I wonder if Negima!? is getting fixed in DVD releases as Moon Phase and Pani Poni Dash! were.

EDIT: Though I should point out that animation problems are hardly a problem for Shinbo alone (and I'm not trying to imply they are) - nor are they really something he can control. I actually somewhat like the solution he uses (to use a static screen of some kind) because it feels sort of artsy. But I find it irritating when episodes go by where I can't remember anything much moving.

oh yea the end was indeed WTF...can it even be called an end? :twitch: and the plot of the series was..."???" *sigh* if it boils down to this i have to say that i enjoyed the original series a lot more than this remake...while this does have some comical values overall i favor a good plot ~

As for the original series, more faithful to the manga up until the end...and that's where it failed too. :upset:

Not that either of the anime series were terribly bad interpretations of the original, but I still await the day that Akamatsu-sensei's manga gets the adaptation that it truly deserves. Until then I'll be elsewhere. :D

Negima last episode season 1 (ep.26)

I pretty much liked the last episode(26) I thought it was really great.even though the battle w/ the devil wasn't very long or exiting.but the chibi asuna was cute. And the World Tree at the end was beautiful:)

I'm beginning to think Shinbo is the guy they bring in when the show has no budget to speak of and he makes it look "arty".... even his delightfully done Hidamari Sketch might as well be a slide show in some episodes (ep 10.....)

I suppose we'll see if these were all band-aids or actually some artsy attempt in the DVDs.

Still waiting for a production team to actually DO Negima rather than rape the concept. :) However, the upcoming live-action implies more pillaging ahead .... though I'm sure Ken A. is all shiny and on the set as often as possible to be surrounded by 30+ girls.

This whole series was a joke. For me as a big Negima fan this was a big insult to the Negima franchisee. It should be burned to ashes and never shown again.

Unfortunately, it may not help.... a better chance would be if someone just edited a "best moments of fanservice" short of the whole series....

hmm, truth. i was high while seeing the first 15ish eps. didn't make too much of a difference.

it seems that this is shaft being shaft on the wrong sort of material. pomo treatment should be reserved to cynicism and social stuffs.

The last episode is kinda sweet and cute.

I'm a little bit confused, seeing as there are two Negima series out there, which one are you refering to? I'm assuming it's the second one "Negima!?" based on the replies I've seen so far but I can't be absolutely sure.

Well either way I enjoyed the last episodes of both series along with the entire series themselves, though the second one Negima!? was my favorite of the two.

hmm, Am I the only person who actually enjoyed this series? Yeah it wasnt the best, yeah it couldve been better, but it also couldve been worse, the first series wasnt exactly a perfecto either (and im a huge fan of the manga btw)

but for the most part, I thought it was an enjoyable watch, and with the negima!? Neo manga eventually going beyond this point, if they ever made a Second season of Negima!? Id watch it :D
