Best kind of pen for outlining pictures?
 

I just wanted the opinion of other fanartists out there... what's the best kind of pen to use for outlining pictures? I usually use a plain old gel pen but it sucks! The lines are too thick and they smear when I'm coloring. :mad: Any tips?

ummmm... sometimes i use Staedtler pigment liner pens. These pens come in alot of differenttip sizes. I even have a .005. Ironically, i rarely use them.

i use ball points ussually i hav a skil at making them not smear...

also i have used a fine tipped sharpie a few times for very large or simple drawings at ink it dun bleed or smear on printer paper teh way i handle it^^

i am dying ta get a pro inking set but i dun got teh money or teh time ta get out and get one..

Mostly I use Sakura Microns. Cheap and can be found in any art store or some office supply stores. I used to use those expensive rapidiograph technical pens but they just got to be too much of a bother with the price and constant refilling. Microns come in lots of sizes and just toss 'em when theyr'e empty :heh:

Just an afterkick Faber Castell ink pens are good as well.

I have the Steadler pigment liners from 005 01 03 05 07 and Faber castell S M L and Brush, which is perfect for coloring large areas black. :)

I use the cheapest pen, it's called "bic" here. It's 0.5, but you can do 0.35 and less, depend on how you use it.

cuz that weird shiny bluish purple black sucks for inking...

also fine point sharpies work well if ya know how ta use them right...

lol Nah it's not the pure black ink ones , it's the non shiny; bluish purple black. The standard that come in a lot of 4 for 1€ lol. They rock. Actually, i only use them for my lineart. And that purple black is perfect for texturing. A full blue bic pic made is also nice :) I don't have ink color problem either after "bic"ing first lol.

Yeah, I use Sakura Microns. There great. I also have a couple of Pilot Hi-Tec pens. They're pretty good too. If you are on a really tight budget, ball points are always good to go.

my scanner is acting up...
so i would post this nice simple dragon i did a while ago and inked with a fine tip sharpie came out great...

anyways yea i like using pure black ink
i get teh big packs of like 20 for 5 buck at office depot they work fine^^

as for some sample pics srry all my hardcopies of inks are liek thrown away or badly done

the recenty ones though... umm teh scanner is fuking wit me...

I used to have ballpoints for inking, but I don't like ink that doesn't dry quickly, and ballpoints always require pressure.

But ofcourse, ink is ink. only ballpoint ink can feather easely and ofcourse smear.
And fineliners are better for coloringlarger objects.

pencil for sketch, then use dip ink for outline. dip pen is the best, but mis-handling could result in destory ur whole artwork. haha~

Yeah. I do the same thing. It's so frustrating when you smudge the ink or it comes out in a blob! :frustrated: You can also use a black fountain pen to do the inking. It's similar to the using a nib and a bottle, but you don't have to re-dip and no blobs. :) You can still smudge though...sigh...I curse being left-handed and not having the sense to work from right to left.

I am a fan of the Sakura Microns, as well. I am partial to a .005 tip and a .01 tip.

I've noticed that when working with these, you should let your work sit for at least 24 hours before erasing the pencil work you inked over. No matter how dry it looks after "an hour or two," it STILL manages to smudge. :heh:

Also, to keep the ink from fading a little when you erase, a kneaded eraser is the best bet!

But that is just from my own experience, someone might have a better technique.

I like using a ball point pen as well, but I hate how the ink spreads and makes the lines look pretty crappy. So instead I switched to Tachikawa's Drawing pen. Its around a .2 . Im good with that. It takes a little getting used to though.

but u can't do too much detial cuz its great for large pics as well as regular sized pics..

just have ta be kinda simplistic...

^^ ussually use it as a last resort when my scanne fights with me...

ball points work great i have a special preferance ta those office elite types they dry quikly and dun fade and such^^

Uh... I use anything from ballpoint pens and sharpies(:love: ) to imported from Japan drawing pens and actual ink for inking. ^^;;;; I say, ballpoint and sharpies are the best. :p
...But I'm weird, so I don't know if that'll work for you. :heh:

mp ur right ball points and sharpies are teh best and cheap way of ining in my opion also
