Hey there, I'm in need of some new anime. Unfortunately, I think I have exhausted the majority of the 'great' animes of the past 5 years or so. Regardless, maybe someone has a few that I've missed out on? I tend to like story driven, somewhat dark and violent animes. Here's what I have seen (or am watching) so far and that I liked:

Deep and dark ? Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is what you are looking for. Horror/mystery, and one of my favorite animes overall. Second season about to start in a few weeks.

Soukyuu no Fafner: Dead Aggressor is a mecha show with a noticeable resemblance to RahXephon. First few episodes might seem average, but it goes up after that; by ep6 i was hooked, and this has managed to claim the spot as my favorite mecha show. SciFi/Action/Drama

Zegapain - another great mecha show (My 2nd favorite, behind Fafner). The plot is interesting and has a very "Matrix" feeling to it. Very well worth the watch. SciFi/Action/romance

Code Geass is another show you might like i think.

I second Geass, Zegapain and Higurashi (I'm excited on the 2nd season :naughty: )

and adding

Black Lagoon ---> B.L. 2nd Barrage ~ very nice gun-action anime
Ergo Proxy ~ sci-fi action type anime and it's also good IMO.....
Fate Stay/Night ~ dark themed anime about masters and servants...
GITS SAC ---> GITS SAC 2nd Gig ~ sci-fi/action, IMO this one is so good....
