MangaGamer licenses Da Capo, Suika, other ero-games for English release

Mod Edit: This thread was extracted from the D.C.P.C. translation project thread where it originated. Direct link to the news for the impatient.

I heard DaCapo is being English localized/licenced (before the end of the year), I guess this project will have to be closed if that is the case... at least the current translator of this project will get an extended break.

You mean, like, officially localized? This late in the game? I would be really, really surprised and shocked if someone took the time to translate all that text for such a small market, especially since even the anime isn't licensed (much easier sell than the games). Of course, it'd be a pleasant surprise, but still... somehow, I really doubt it... (Here's to hoping I'm proved wrong!)

Hopefully, it'll come up at the Circus panel at Anime Expo this week. If it's true, can we expect it uncensored? lol

I hope someone will ask if there will be a da capo III (not symphony)

Well then, color me very surprised! But yeah, I'm with Asrialys -- let's see what Circus has to say at AX. And let's hope the English quality is better than what's on their site...

It's been asked before in magazine interviews, and the only answer they've given so far is that they weren't actively working on it or planning it yet -- that D.C. II still has life left in it and they were focusing on that. Some have said some of the hidden characters in D.C. II P.S. suggest that the next D.C. game may take a slightly different direction, but I guess we'll see.

Double the translation work, and they can't charge double the price? I'd guess that, if D.C. sells well, they'll eventually bring out D.C.P.C.

We downloaded the trial version of "Suck my **** or die!" (yes I know, terrible name) and it looks like it's uncensored. There's a few typos here and there, but without the original game to compare, we can't tell if the translation is accurate or not...

drmr 2008-07-01 01:29

Just finished both of mangagamer's trial games, the translations were borderline... but ahhh we'll finally tell if this is legit in a couple of days or not. Like most others here I've been wanting a reason to get this game - may(?) finally have it.

Edit: after some careful consideration, how could anyone have seven titles (I think it's seven?) translated without any income unless they have heavy corporate backing... makes you wonder?

A brave soul (obviously not me <_<) has purchased and downloaded a game.

EDIT: Main writeup updated with a link to screenshots.

PS: Should all this discussion be moved into a separate thread? I think we've pretty much derailed from talking about DCPC...

Agreed -- now moved to its own thread.

As I thought about this last night, I realized that this is probably "too realistic to be fake" -- the mediocre translation quality, quasi-shoddy website, timing of the announcement, two arguable big-names with a lot of arguably "C" titles, and so on. If this were happening for real, this is probably the way it'd happen. I only wish that we could do something to encourage them to improve the quality of the script, but in this tiny market this all we can hope for. I only hope that people really do purchase this time, and don't just drive this company out of business like Hirameki who went before it.

Wait I read the novelnews link and it had a list of games. Some with dates besides them some without. Does that mean that the one with date besides them will be released on mangagamer on that date and the one's that don't have dates have unknown TBA release dates.

Oops, I guess it wasn't clear enough. The ones without dates are already available for purchase. For example, we have images from a purchased version of HinataBokko (Which girl should I choose?) and Edelweiss.

From what I understand, these games will require online activation? If that's true, I might just pass on them... That's much too annoying. BTW what I'm refering to is the activation pics of their screenshots.

Yes, these games are digitally distributed, so some kind of authentication scheme is a given.

That said, I think it'll be tough for potential customers to trust a sketchy service that just appeared overnight.

heaven forbid that you would get a blister on your little pinky finger from typing in a few letters and numbers.

the real problems would be

#1 not having a physical copy of the game, unless its cheap this is a problem. charging full price for virtual media never sells well. (unless you work for apple)

#2 if the game license restricts you from activating the game a certain number of times. I can understand pirate protection but I myself have 3 computers and crashes with reformats are quite frequent. see problem #1.

sa547 2008-07-02 00:31

I decided to do a WHOIS check on the site...

(Edit: read encubed and someone already did that as well)

Yeah, and if this company goes under the way of Hirameki at some point and they take their verification server down with them that leaves anyone who's bought the game and is installing it after that time in a bit of a bad situation.
