The movie was pretty much the culmination of both seasons, and IMO shares the same strengths ans weaknesses as them.

The first part of the movie was really original and good, made me expect something really great. But the second part was... pretty much season 2 all over again, which isn't necessarily a bad thing per se (depending on whether you liked it or not), but definitely disappointing when I was expecting more.

Some spoilers :

When the heck did Klaus become the president of the ESF? He was only mentioned as the leader of the fleet that carries Innovators dedicated to exploring space.

Saji's role in the entire series is to show how one single person, with no ties to a war, can still be affected by it.

I agree, except they gave him too much screen time and development in season 2 that amounted to nothing at all. I was expecting him to innovate together with Setsuna so that they can both "understand" each other since they basically have completely different backgrounds, but nope. He gets his girl and he's gone.

They did really poor job of using Saji's character, if they wanted to make someone who has nothing to do with war and is still affected by it they need to do it justice like Al in 0080.

He learned that he has to do something to get Louise back to him; not just the wishy washy write in his diary like at the end of S1.

Also, I wouldn't even try to find out who's the better between the two (Al and Saji); Saji have been on the bad too throughout the season.

The movie opened up a gateway to more alien races in the 00 series. The ELS can't possibly be the only ones.

I can also guarantee that there will be those that do not wish to understand. Conflict between humans has ended, but there is no telling what will happen next with more encounters.

Good point.

ESF and ELS technology collaboration? I wonder what kind of MS would that produce?

Not a lot I think. Since the ELS are living things, I don't think they have any technology to share.
