First of all I disliked the excessive beating on Shouma in this episode. Usually I don't mind when the girl beats up on the guy a little (because I know it's just meant for comedy) but this was definitely overboard. And Shouma just didn't deserve it.

But I guess I can let it slide because it was obvious Ringo was doing it because she is in denial over her feelings for Shouma. I just hope she realizes it sooner rather than later. Was Himari trying to get Shouma to say he liked Ringo too? I couldn't tell.

I couldn't believe the frog thing actually worked (at least I think it did) but it is telling that even though Ringo couldn't give up on Tabuki, she couldn't go through with it. Well at least it's something. And Tabuki going Kero Kero was :heh:


The part with Natsume/Kanba was too short and I really couldn't understand anything except I was amused by Esmerelda flirting/beating up on No. 1. Poor Penguin! :p


As for the ending and what Shouma said about it being their fault Ringo's sister died, I obviously don't think it really was their fault. But my guess is something bad happened to save Kanba and Shouma when they were babies. We'll see

She's already realised her feelings, Yuri made her realise them. That's why she's angry at Shoma at the end of the episode, because he came along and "ruined her destiny."

I like the line about Shouma ruining Ringo's destiny. Obviously that's a good thing, she just doesn't realize it yet.

Nono, she didn't openly admit it. She just knows it and its confusing the hell out of her because it's simply "not how it's meant to be" what with her being a firm believer in fate and that her fate was "supposed" to be that she would become Momoka.

pretty sure the tabuki potion thing was real, what with the warning that it only lasts a night. i also liked how it said to be used as a last resort only so i'm thinking that's the last of crazy ringo.

that said, i was more surprised by yuri's reaction to the whole thing than anything. she was very composed and sympathetic of ringo. did she know that the potion lasted a day? clearly she's aware of ringo's stalking/plan which leads me to believe she may have the other half of the diary. especially since natsume doesn't have it. but that doesn't explain how yuri was always two steps ahead of ringo when she planned those curry dates, etc.

i have to say though that all of the sho x ringo positivity was kind of reversed with sho's reveal. sho thwarting ringo's fate is a GOOD thing but now that she knows sho is supposedly to "blame" for her sister's death, she may include revenge as part of her plan :uhoh: either way, i'm confused how newborn babies can be at fault?

it's just cementing my suspicions that kanba's dad may have worked for kiga group, which possibly led to momoka's death, himari's isolation. i don't even think the parents are dead to be honest. it also explains kanba's involvement with them now.

finally, natsume is indeed a psycho stalker hopelessly in love with kanba--kinda a let down. but considering she's working for some penguin group, maybe kanba's her fated one? that's why she's being aggressive. :confused:

anyway good episode.

The Ringo beatdowns on Shouma were silly and beneath the dignity of what this show should be doing, but on the whole we at least saw some movement. The episode really benefited from a shared focus on several characters, which has actually been quite a rare thing.

I was torn about whether that frog-sweat thing actually worked - that's pretty out there even for Ikuhara - but it looks as if that wasn't a fantasy. I understand Ringo being pissed at Shouma for planting the seed of common sense that caused her to walk away before making a terrible mistake with Tabuki, though I'm not sure why Shouma says he and Kanba are to blame because they were born on the same day Ringo was, and that Momoko died. Is he being symbolic, or does he believe that strongly in fate? Clearly that date - March 20, 1995, the Sarin gas attacks - is a thread that's tying multiple fates together.

Still think Mario looks like a girl. Great week for the penguins, especially #2 with the butt-microwave and using his farts to achieve flight. And it's been a great week for batshit crazy girls in anime, too, with Masako really joining the party. They're preparing the field for the arrival of the true queen, Yuno Gasai....

Good, solid episode. Nice to see the characters drawn on-model this time.

As with Episode 10, Penguindrum did a good job in fully utilizing its main protagonist cast in Episode 11. In particular, I like the Plot A/Plot B approach, with Kanba leading one and Ringo the other. I find that the pacing of this show is much better when you have that Plot A/Plot B approach in play, as it makes it all feel more eventful and you don't get a chance to start to get tired of either major protagonist.

The "Survival Strategy!" part of this episode was very well-timed, and I liked how they skipped a big chunk of it.

This episode supports the view that Himari and the Penguin Queen are one and the same. Before the Penguin Queen showed up, it occurred to me that Himari must be pissed given how Ringo reacted to Sho and her cooking that curry and giving Ringo some. And lo and behold, just when I'd expect Himari to be pissed, the Penguin Queen persona comes flying out.

Interestingly, the Penguin Queen here seemed to operate in a way to force Ringo and Sho to make amends with one another. In other words, this wasn't a case of the Penguin Queen making demands of an obviously self-interested nature. I'm really starting to think that the Penguin Queen persona reflects a side of Himari that the girl has chosen to hide beneath her more saccharine surface-level persona. But perhaps the two personae will start to grow closer together...


The Ringo/Sho developments were pretty clear-cut in this episode, and framed it well.

Still not sure what to make out of the Kanba/Natsume section, but it was certainly quite entertaining. :heh:

9/10 overall.

I wish I could take credit for it, but an anonymous commenter on the blog points out that Penguin #2s "gas attack" on the subway is yet another reference to the Sarin attacks on the date of Ringo, Shou and Kanba's birth, and Momoko's death. I don't know how I missed that initially.

Pretty funny episode even with all the serious content in. That fart jetpack and the samurai outfit lol.

Natsume said she had only half the diary.

As such, the person on the motorcycle was not Natsume, or somebody working under her or in cahoots with her.

So who was the person on the motorcycle who ripped half of Ringo's diary out of her hands?

I think that it was... Kanba. ;) And I think he still has it, and has it hidden away somewhere for safe keeping.

Here's why I think this is:

1. Kanba was clearly getting impatient with his brother's methods of acquiring Ringo's diary. Kanba explicitly said that Sho should just steal it already. This was said not long before Mr. Motorcycle showed up.

2. Being the proactive guy he is, Kanba decided to take things into his own hands (no pun intended :p ) by trailing Ringo and Sho back in Episode 9, patiently waiting for the opportune moment to strike, and take Ringo's diary away from her.

3. Once that moment presented itself, Kanba floored that motorcycle and went for the diary. Kanba wanted this to be a neat and clean operation, doing the least amount of physical damage to Ringo as possible, given that Ringo is his sister's BFF. That's why he didn't just try to beat Ringo up, knock her unconscious, and take the diary that way.

4. Kanba was "white as a sheet" upon hearing about Sho's really dangerous accident, at least in part because his theft of half of Ringo's diary was the catalyst that lead to it.

5. Kanba told Ringo to hold on to her remaining half of the diary since he felt it was safer in her hands than his as he attempted to hunt down Sho's kidnapper in Episode 10. Basically, he didn't want Sho's kidnapper to have an opportunity to steal the remaining half of Ringo's diary from him.


If this is true, then it makes the conflict between Kanba and Natsume more interesting. They both have one half of the diary, which might also be one half of the Penguin Drum.

Actually, that woman who picked up the dropped half of the diary looked nothing like Masako (I was already suspecting "wtf what's Yuri doing there? Based of the silhouette"). Before everyone blamed Natsume for the bike steal scene though - and when I originally watched it - I did think it was Kanba. But I think Yuri picked up that half that Ringo dropped. Masako Stole the one she tore apart. Will rewatch to confirm sides.

Actually, I basically confirmed your speculation lol. I don't know if it was Kanba who was on the bike but it definitely wasn't Masako because the half she has is the half that was dropped - the front half - while the biker stole the last half. It could have been Kanba but I am not too sure as Masako clearly stalks him all the time and would presumably know he has the other half o_O. She does know about the stealing by the biker as she was the woman who picked up the front half of the diary and she already knows Ringo had only the half because she texts Kanba to handover "half of the diary".
