Anonymous and zero-presence fansubbing

Why is it so popular nowadays?

cyth 2007-08-03 12:08

Could be because of several things (some people don't feel the need for building big e-penis, fear of piracy, fear of being lulled at for shitty encoding and raw providing, oh and shitty translation), but it's probably just the continuation of the idea of Anonymous, you know, the Anonymous is strong, we do not forgive, we do not forget, we're not hackers on steroids, we're your neighbor, we go through your trash, we make your meals, we're someone close to you type of pan-versatility.

End of thread

Malintex_Terek 2007-08-03 13:23

You can't send a C&D to Anonymous.

WanderingKnight 2007-08-03 13:48

Perhaps it's related to this?

:p

BEWARE OF THE LULZ!

Cheezy 2007-08-03 14:08

Uhh, i downloaded School Days 5 from anynomous, and there was no fansub?

All theese files should really have a RAW or sub-group name on them..

fireshark 2007-08-04 01:27

That Fox segment on Anonymous was excellent.

Access 2007-08-04 10:32

'Anonymous' only seems unusual if you are used to the excesses of digisubbing past.

edogawaconan 2007-08-04 11:01

when we're on it, anyone know who [Rakuda] is?

Cythraul 2007-08-13 01:40

The only 'strange' part of anonymous fansubbers is the need (of some of them) to point out that they're different anonymous than some other subber...

Daiz 2007-08-13 09:44

It's not popular yet, but it needs to be. Subbing for the community is infinitely better than "we [the fansubbers] sub for ourselves". By subbing anonymously, people basically throw their pride (also known as e-peen wavering) in the corner for the sake of the community. And that's good.

As much as I like the idea of anonymous fansubbing, I don't think the "e-peen wavering" applies to the idea of subbing for oneself. I don't know of many fansubbers that would waver their egos around these days anyway. That era is long gone, to be honest. And even if you happen to run into such a fansubber, you were most likely speaking to them directly on IRC or some forum. ~95% of the community doesn't even deal with fansubbers directly on a regular basis, they just download what they fansub, so logically they don't care. That's why I'm having a hard time believing tossing your ego away suddenly improves the situation a million times over for your typical leecher. No, it just makes the fansubbing part of the community a nicer place.

edogawaconan 2007-08-13 11:49

warranty of quality?

Medalist 2007-08-13 13:30

It's not really popular unless your referring to download counts, but rather some don't want to bother with being in a group.

the non-anonymous Anonymous member

edogawaconan 2007-08-13 13:56

what I meant is, by doing a non-anonymous subbing, people (some people, at least) will know what to expect from each particular groups...
as for why anonymous, perhaps it's the reverse of that (ie doing things as one (they) like without need to worry about the quality)

Soluzar 2007-08-21 06:29

I like the idea of anonymous fan-translations. It would mean that the translator was safe from legal repercussions. Lets not forget that fansubbing and scanlation are illegal, and that anyone who does either could get in trouble. It also protects you from having to deal with leechers. They don't know who you are, where to find you, or anything other than what you released.

Sounds like a plan to me. Unless you want recognition, which means you have to make a trade in return for that.

Advantages:
  • complete anonymity
  • no need to worry about reputation
  • release freely at your own convenience

Disadvantages:
  • quality may be questionable
  • may be difficult to distribute
  • lacks proper team
  • different people may release anonymously, and thus there may be duplicate releases
  • more likely to be used by pirates for selling DVDs
  • lacks credibility if one decides to finally apply for a fansub group (in which case evidence should be provided, but then the fansub is no longer anonymous, is it?)

  • I thought all groups released at their own convenience.
  • Quality of fansubs will always be questionable. This also holds for non-anonymous fansubbers.
  • I don't see any difficulty in distributing on a public bittorrent tracker.
  • What is a proper team?
  • True, but you don't need the label "Anonymous" to be anonymous. Think Koi.
  • What fansub isn't subjected to bootleg distribution, hm?
  • lul

DryFire 2007-08-21 10:17

By tagging it it's no longer anonymous...

Sounds stereotypish, but then we all have our own opinion on things. Anonymous or not won't stop people from using the subs. Probability won't change.

Proper Team? Do tell more.

How is quality anymore questionable than the normal fansub. Groups known for quality can still have "suck" quality sometimes, no matter of previous releases. Everyone releases at their convenience....and as for reputation I won't say any names, No one actually cares about that unless they really are determined for e-penis(I won't say names :) )

Yeah a proper team is whatever gets job done. You don't necessarily have to have a karaoke timer or a public relations manager.

Not all people or groups care to or want to have a public presence and/or image. That's all there is too it, really. If you have been around to see the big picture, not just the last few years of digisubbing, what's happening now is by no means unusual, nor reason for any concern.

As for quality, even in 'real life', those who equate a 'brand' with quality are fooling themselves more often than not. In the end, whether it's people in a non-public group or people in a public group, it's the skills and abilities of those people, and the group management / cohesion that make the sub a quality one. It has nothing to do with public relations, or the lack thereof.
