Best English Dubs

Just watchin Vampire Hunter D,and ive always noticed that it has a good english dub, which is very rare in my mind.So what all do u think has the best dubs, alos list what u think are some of the worst dubs

Almost none, Dubs sucks. They're inaccurate, inappropriate and the wordings aren't right. I hate dubs, even if there are some good dubs out there, I would still say most dubs suck. But there are very very few dubs that are actually quite good though. Vampire Hunter D's dub is okay, but I still wouldn't say it's the best

Cowboy Bebop is easily the best dub ever in my opinion, I actually prefer it to the original Japanese. The dubs for Trigun, Inuyasha, Tenchi and some others are good also.

Read or Die is freaking GODLIKE</unrealtournament>. If Read or Dream comes out and the returning characters' VAs are clearly not the same, heads will roll.

Excel Saga is ALMOST a match for ROD. The VAs obviously poured their hearts and souls into that one, despite a few hiccups.

Ah My Goddess could have been great. Keiichi and Urd kicked copious amounts of ass especially. But stupid Belldandy and Tamiya drag it down to merely okay.

I really want to hear the (widely-acclaimed) Mahoromatic dub. Can anybody who's seen it tell me what they think?

And what about Noir? From the ADV demo disc I got at Comic Con '03, it sounded pretty sweet. What's the verdict on that?

Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away were extremly well done. Of course actually having famous American actors doing the voices might of had something to do with that.

Not only famous but better actors in general. The guy that did Haku in the Spirited Away english dub was great. He sounded almost like his Japanese counterpart. Billy Bob Thornton was good in Mononoke and I liked Phil Hartman's Jiji in Kiki.

On a related note:
I was surprised to find out that the guy who voiced the hand in Vampire Hunter D is also the voice of Bender in Futurama.

wow didnt know that, but then again i dont watch futurama.

Personally, i would much rather watch my anime in the orginal language it was made in.But like i said there are a few dubs that i dont mind watching. One anime i absoulety hate the dubs on is Hellsing. They butchered that anime to hell and the english VA should die because of such a horrible job they did.I mean Arucard english vocie was a pansy,no were near as much evil presence as the japanes VA was

Excel's American voice actress gave me a headache within 5 minutes of watching it so I switched to the Japanese audio track and never looked back.

Seifer_us 2004-02-05 01:55

As said before, Cowboy Bebop is most likely the best dub you'll ever see. They have good EXTRAS for crying out loud.

If you've never seen it, Shinesman has a great dub as well.

I like the Trigun dub as well, although it takes until about 10 or so episodes in before the actors really seemed settled into their roles. I love the Japanese audio a lot though. I mean, how can you not? It's got Onosaka Masaya!

Excel gives me a headache in ANY language... :heh:

The Golden Boy dub also deserves a nod, as it's the only anime that I would ALWAYS rather listen to in English than in Japanese. Go check it out and maybe you'll understand why...

Sepiraph 2004-02-05 02:10

Easily Cowboy Bebop, which is so far the only dub that I'd prefer over the sub. In my experiences, most dubs are terrible.

Now that I think about it, I liked the Escaflowne dub too, more so than the sub.

RichMan 2004-02-05 02:57

The only dubs that I can watch are GoldenBoy and Gundam Wing, otherwise watching dubs is a horrid experience.

Go-lytely 2004-02-05 03:03

In the Goldenboy dub he sounds too much like a dumb surfer but it is a better dub than the norm. I still like the Japanese better. I love how the guy says "boing" in japanese.

Keitaro 2004-02-05 05:04

Ah Golden boy... brings back such fond memories I loved that show. Though it was only 6 short OVA's it was awesome how everything tied in together in the final OVA almost a work of art. Anyways the dub was really good. The best I've ever seen. The voices actually match up with the characters really well but I still perfer the subbed version with japanese dub. The female japanese voices just sounds so sexy and natural, I like  :naughty: lol

Tabiree 2004-02-05 07:00

The Big O is pretty good. Actually, nearly every dubbed sunrise production is pretty darn neat. Hell I like the whole thing.

I'll just quote what some people wrote in a previous thread:

But I mean really, everybody knows it's going to be edited on TV, and everybody knows the dub won't be as good as the original audio.

Who cares? TV screenings are not for viewers like us, they're for the casual anime fans. I won't watch a second of SEED on TV, but I'll be buying the dvds the second it's possible.

Elitist symptom #1: A dub is always worse than the Japanese audio, no matter who does it, when it was made, or whether the person making the claim even knows Japanese at all.

chamelean75 2004-02-06 00:29

hmmm, good dubs. Yes, I agree that Princess Monoke and Spirited Away were well done. Also, Pokemon didn't seem too bad but I've never seen it in Japanese so I can't really say but it's not like Ash or Pikachu say that much important stuff anyways.

AnimeFangirl 2004-02-06 00:36

I would be surprised if they'd bothered to dub over Pikachu's voice. I mean, what does he/she/it ever say that would need to be translated? Pika!

haren 2004-02-06 01:52

Hrm Good dubs.

Good dubs:
Cowboy Bebop
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Neon Genisis Evangelion

Bad Dubs:
Nadesico
X TV
FLCL
Excel Saga
Lupin the 3rd (not about the voices but the american placements in the dialog)
Initial D ( Why i tell you WHY!!! )

sperry 2004-02-06 07:31

I actually thought that Nadesico had a great dub. I prefer it over the Japanese. Yurika and Ruri's VAs fit them a lot better in the dub to me.

Eva wasn't bad, but I really loved Asuka's dub voice. I think it suited her better than the Japanese VA did.

And that's about it really... not all english dubs are bad, but those are really the only ones I've found that I like better than the japanese.

squonjon 2004-02-06 10:31

the dub of urusei yatsura that BBC4 did was absolutely brilliant. it proved that anime and copious swearing in mockney accents don't have to be mutually exclusive.
