Genre: Romance

Expected Release Date: October 27, 2006

Website: http://anime.softgarage.com/_summer/

This is an OVA series that is seem to be based on a game. The premesis of the show has been done to death, but that doesn't mean I'm tired of them. I'll simply watch anything that has a hint of romance, well, unless it is gundam (no offense to the gundam fans of course. :heh: ) Synopsis of the show is as taken from animenfo:

“Do you love any girl?”

This word asked by his friend casually during the school excursion changes something in Kaizu Takui.

"What will we be like, 10 or 20 years later?” When I have a lover, who stays next to me…?"

Usual breakfast with a childhood friend Konami, a little sister in law Sana, and her classmate Chiwa... At school, nothing special days with classmate Shino, and the senior student Wakana, etc... Gradually, images of the girls whom he has never had a special feelings with begin to change.

Then, at the night of Tanabata(*), Kaizus is going to open annual party. While others are writing their wishes on tanazaku, what is Konami’s secret wish…?

In Japan, is it still going to be summer in October? Also, the reason behind the hyphen ( _ ) attached in front of the title is a mystery. Looking forward to it!

Haha, well, AIR was aired during winter, after all.

Also, for those who didn't know, the title is read as Underbar Summer, abbreviated to Andaba among fans. Underbar has the same meaning as underscore.

The reason for the _, due to existing copyrights? Then again, the consumer version of the game is titled _summer## (Underbar Summer Double Sharp), so who knows.

Hmm, fall is definitely the season for bishoujo moe.

The girls look cute, so of course I'm watching this :P

I'm thinking about getting the game >.<

If you're going to, make sure you play before the anime airs. ^^

This is yet another show i really can't wait for (and of course.. i'm looking forward to Kanon more), Here's hoping they go with the games music~

Yeah, that way I'll see how much the anime will suck :heh:

And I'm pretty excited about Kanon anime :)

For those who are interested in this anime, I HIGHLY suggest playing the game first since the OVA is basically a compliment to the game. Fans will sincerely appreciate it, the rest will probably scratch their heads in confusion~

_Summer is one of my favorite games from 2005. While it does take on a few bishoujo stereotypes, everything just pulls together so well that it became something magical. I really can't stress how good a game this was~

The great cast of memorable characters,
the soft, relaxing acoustical music,
the laid back atmosphere,
just everyday life.

Simply put, it's a sweet and charming story of first love in summer.

kuuu~ s-a-n-a-chan!!! <3

[FYI, the protagonist name is Kaizu Takumi. (takui sounds wierd, no?)]

I have to agree with you.. the feelings you recive from the game are something that just won't come from the anime - and its not everyday you find a game that has all those amazing elements.

Still.. i'm wishing that the OAV shall use the games music. <3

*nod nod* I really hope they will, but it doesn't seem like it since the titles on the OAV CD are different from the tracks in-game.

Too bad it seems like they're using a different OP/ED and artist. I really loved Miyuki Hashimoto's voice, especially in the final insert song, it's absolutely heart moving~~~ ´ー`)

Shiroth 2006-08-13 08:22

Well that just stinks. ^^;;

Ah well, at least this way they'll both be two different stories.. so to speak~

*chokes*

Ummm..... wow. I can understand games like To Heart 2 or Kanon getting anime adaptations, but _Summer? What were the chances of that ever happening? :D

Well, great news anyway!

Its time for Shiro-tan to show some lovely goodies~

Might as well say they're perfect.. well, meaning just in-time for the OAV to air in just under a months time. ^_^

Seeing that Konami and Chiwa were the top two in the chara-popularity poll by a large margin, it's no suprise that they get their own figurine... still I wish there was a Sana one~ *shiku shiku*

¥6,090 for the standard DVD and ¥8,190 for the special version... For just 30 minutes of animation, that costs almosts as much as the game itself! ;´Д`)=3

Tohoho, looks like I'll grab the raw first to see if it's worth the purchase. I doubt that this one will be fansubbed~~~

Daniel E. 2006-09-10 02:39

Looks interesting, Guess I'll check it out just for the heck of it. :p

Yeah, or if a group does pick it up.. it'll be a bright long release or something.

Same here.

Now the question is, are there any groups interested in subbing it? Hopefully there would be one. (Also still hoping Tsuyokiss gets released even semi-regularly)

What's the long haired girl's name btw? The first figurine linked by Shiroth and the girl in the forefront of the picture of Monir?

Konami Hatano
波多野 小奈美
Konami is the childhood friend that lives next door. Very kindhearted and softspoken. She and Takumi have a very close relationship and are often mispercieved as a "newlywed couple". She loves cooking and cooks for Sana and Takumi, but has a critical weakness against octopus (a traumatical, but hilarous childhood experience ^^)

I can write more character profiles if you guys are interested~~

Osana-najimi? Otonari-san? Long hair? All of a sudden, I'm not very interested in other characters. XD

Konami FTW! ^_^

martino 2006-09-10 15:50

I'll surely have to watch this, to satisfy my romantic needs no matter how rubbish it will turn out to be.

The charcter designs don't look to appealing to me though... :(

monir 2006-09-30 16:13

The raw for the first episode is out to my pleasant surprise as I was expecting this to be released at a much later date. Character design is neat. The animation is crisp as expected from OVA series. Lot's of usage of the CG. The story is, well, nothing new. Nontheless, the appeal will be there for those who like these sort of genre, and so, I liked it very much! :)

Screencap for Episode 1

http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/summer1dfc.jpg

The raw I watched wasn't as good as I would like, plus the aspect ratio is all wrong, but the blame goes to whoever captured it. Don't be alarmed if the faces seem tall in the screencaps. I simply set the aspect ratio to 16:9 in my MPC (media player classic to correct the problem. Unfortunately, the setting doesn't affect the screecaps for it takes them as it is captured in the original aspect ratio. Sorry about the nuisance.
