Creating Fansubs - Questions and Answers

iv started to use substation alpha and save a clear file and saved it into a ssa file format then used subtittle workshop and opened the ssa file and started to make the subtittles for the movie, afterwards when it was done, i saved the files still ass ssa on subtittle workshop then draged the files also with the movie avi into submux and it created another avi files with no subs!! what did i do wrong here? anyone point me out?

TheFluff 2006-09-16 11:56

What you did wrong:
1. You put softsubs into AVI
2. You tried to watch softsubs without a softsub renderer

The solution for #1 is to use a better container format, like MKV. (you could also hardsub, but that requires reencoding and isn't as nice)
As for 2, install VSFilter (or just get CCCP). Or you could watch it in MPlayer, which can render subs by itself.

i just wanted to enbed the subs into the avi file, what do i have to do?

DEvok 2006-09-16 12:44

No, you really don't want to do that. It's a bad idea, there's a reason noone uses it. Just because you CAN do it doesn't mean you SHOULD.

Er. Well. If you really HAVE to, the way to go is to use AviMuxGUI. But to view them, you STILL need vsfilter.

N-Bomb 2006-09-16 13:15

Hey guy, what you need is the vobsub package from http://www.afterdawn.com/software/vi...ols/vobsub.cfm

I dunno if vsfilter is the same thing or better or what, but after you install this, you just use the textsub filter to hardsub the SSA file into your AVI. You can also do hardsubbing from within avisynth, but that's neither here nor there.

HE WANTS HARDSUBBED AVI, PEOPLE. NOT SOFTSUBS OR MKVs. >.>

No, that's actually not what you want either, even if you wanted to hardsub.

VSfilter is basically the same thing but about 15 versions and 3-4 years newer. That VobSub version you linked to is an ancient bug-ridden evil that should NOT be used.

Cool, you're a telepath? Because that's certainly not what he makes it sound like.

i just want the same type of avi other ppl fansub.

Starks 2006-09-16 20:50

Use VirtualDub/VirtualDubMod and load the sub file using TextSub in the filter section...

TheFluff 2006-09-17 02:43

Ah. Well, what Starks said. To elaborate a bit:
1. Get VSFilter 2.37 from http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli
2. Rename the .dll to .vdf and put it in your Virtualdub plugins folder
3. Add TextSub as a video filter
4. Encode
5. ???
6. PROFIT!

thanx bro, u know at i had the program already thought it was crap so didnt touch it :eyespin: got it working ppl thanx! one last thing, can u adjust the size the format when saving the sub and avi on virtualdub?
also so what was submux used for anyways? iv downloaded soo many programs.

-edit, iv got the enbedded file, but theres a problem, why do i have a very slow framrate animation? movie runs very slow, what do i have to do in virtual dub?

DEvok 2006-09-18 11:43

Virtual Dub size and frame matter

i just encoded my avi file and subs together but the file is like 3-4gig after its done why? can you adjust the size when im encoding it?
also after my file is done the frame rate of the avi runs slow.... can it be fixed? plz reply in advance, thanx!

Medalist 2006-09-18 15:44

Decompressed encode? (Video->Compression)
2. Typically on 2-pass XVID on 2nd pass configure the calc accordingly
3. Avisynth( Fdecimate(23.976) ) though others like different decimators
4. I suggest using avisynth for all filtering if you don't already. via TextSub , Decimation, Smoothers, sharpen,( deen , edeen, convolution3d, FluxSmooth ) or something you like.

And yes it can be fixed. Read #1 and #2 and #3 - and should be helpful enough to guide you to where you want to be.
(Video->Compression->Scroll to XVID-> Configure->??? Do your stuff.

how to make the subs on top screen?

does anyonwe know how to make your words go on the top screen with substation apha and with virtual dub?? i did it with subtittle workshop and when opened it on virtual dub it was in the middle screen, played around still didnt work, any ideas?

Schneizel 2006-09-19 09:43

...you mean {\an8}...?

I'm confused on what you mean/are trying to do...

StarCreator 2006-09-19 10:16

In Advanced Sub Station files, it's alignment 8.

In Sub Station Alpha files, I believe it's alignment 6.

TheFluff 2006-09-19 12:30

VSFilter doesn't care either way, you can use both the SSA-style {\a6} as well as the ASS-style {\an8} in both ASS and SSA scripts. Take care with what type of styles you have, though.

oh I have a question

like there's a part when 2 people are talking at the same time and people do

-whatever this person said
-wahtever other person said

how do you do that...

Starks 2006-09-19 14:24

I love how Fluff is so quick to pounce on the newbies...

Medalist 2006-09-19 15:52

Hmm let me think = time what person 1 says first
Then like you know - time what person 2 says 2nd
