Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA [manga]

Genre: action, comedy, magical girls, ecchi.

Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA is a Fate/Stay night spin-off manga by Hiroyama Hiroshi featuring Illya von Einzbern as the main character. It is set in an alternate universe where Illya is living a peaceful and ordinary life in Japan with her father Kiritsugu, her mother Irisviel, her step-brother Shirou, and their two maids. However, one day, Illya is chosen by the magical stick Ruby as its new master and is forced by its previous owner, Rin Tohsaka, to become a magical girl and help her in her quest to collect Class Cards, magical artefacts containing the power of Heroic Spirits. To do so, she needs to defeat those powerful Heroic Spirits.

The first series concluded after two volumes and was then followed by an on-going sequel titled Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA 2wei! It takes place a few weeks after the end of the first manga. Rin and Luvia once again require Illya and Miyu's assistance, this time in order to normalize the unstable Earth pulse which had been disrupted by their previous battles. After the ceremony is completed, something goes horribly wrong and Illya finds herself sitting next to... a clone of herself.

There are about 4 of 2wei! volumes out in Japan so far.

Sadly, it seems to be on hiatus... at Mangfox at least.

Any idea if it's been translated further anywere?

P.S: FINALLY THIS GET IT'S OWN THREAD>

DragoZERO 2012-01-01 11:19

MangaFox is the worst possible place to go for manga. Go to MangaUpdates and go direct to the scanlator. No need to put money in MangaFox's pocket (yes, they make money) for something they don't make in any way.

Kanon 2012-01-01 15:11

The group scanlating it hasn't released any new chapters in a while but as far as I know they haven't dropped it, and I doubt they will since it's the second most popular manga they're translating going by the poll on their site. We just need to be patient.

I gave in and took a look at the raws, and I can say it will be worth the wait.

Spoiler for up to chapter 23:

The battle scenes are as awesome as ever. To be honest, I never expected them to be this good in the first place. I was very impressed. I almost creamed my pants when Illya used the archer card for the first time and turned into Archerko. That was also the moment I fell in love with this manga and realized it was much more than a simple affectionate parody.

The humor is great as well as. I never get tired of Rin and Luvia hijinks. Illya's classmates are a riot too, especially that girl whose name I forgot... I'm sure you know who I'm talking about.

Oh and I need to say I love Miyu and Kuro. Great additions to the Fate cast. I hope we'll learn more about Miyu and her past soon, I've been very intrigued ever since she mistook Shirou for her brother.

I wasn't expecting much with this one. I was mostly curious because of some crossover (that I still haven't found) between this and Nanoha. But this is quite funny and yet also has an interesting story.

Also just about any scene with Irisviel is pure gold, especially in the second part of the series after Kero is introduced. Make me want to see Irisviel interact in Carnival Phantasm because I figure her personality will be based more on her appearance in this manga than anything else (even though it probably isn't related in any way)

Though there is a little too much loli fanservice for my tastes. I bare it because it is funny, and the story has gotten to the point where I am curious what is the deal with Miyu in particular, but where it will lead.

Lisemer 2012-01-01 23:22

I'm really more interested in if Shiro or Kiritsugu will have some relevance in the story or not, because at least Shiro seems to have a link with Miyu.
Spoiler:

I want more scenes with him and the girls too. :heh:

though I guessed that this is the alter universe where Kiritsugu opted out of the 4th Holy Grail war, then
Spoiler for shirou:

Yeah, Irisviel is just amazing. All of her scenes are so funny. Seeing her interact with her daughter(s) and Shirou is like a dream come true. I hope Kiritsugu will show up soon too. As Shirou said, the female to male ratio needs to be balanced.

All we know is that he abandoned the grail before the war even started. He might have still taken part in the war in order to put an end to it forever. I think what's happening right now is a side-effect of whatever he did back then.

Just marathoned up till chapter 17. I'm undescribably amazed. I like the drawing style. The comedy moments are gold, the fights are I think not less cool than in F/Z or F/SN, maybe even cooler; and I don't mind the "fanservice" at all. Keep it coming, actually. :p

Ithekro 2012-01-02 18:03

I don't know anything past 2wei chapter 17 either.

Spoiler for Who is Miyu?:

One thing that is odd is that the story seems to take place about when Fate/Stay Night's story would have happened, but Illya seems too young in this manga based on how she looks in Fate/Zero. Yet everyone else seems the correct age. She has the age that she appears, rather than her actual age. At least from my understanding of things.

I think one of the things that became apparent early on (at least for me) was that the Holy Grail War as we know of it never happened. So no magi slaughtering each other generation after generation for a chance at a wish. Heck, the only hint we have of it was that the Einzberns had a massive ritual planned, but it never materialized, which explains why among the magi community Ilya's family is considered very obscure.

And since there's no Grail War, Ilya's fate as a grail holder never came to pass as well. It's one of those things that made Kuro angry at Ilya to begin with, as her 'destiny', as it were, never came to pass.

Ithekro 2012-01-02 20:06

True, but her age still seems off despite everything else being more or less "normal". Considering what happened with the Einzberns and thus reasons for Kero anger, the grail is still there, in some form. For some reason. Also the cards for the classes are still there for some reason...the mages are still present and such...just without the Wars taking place because the Einzberns decided to do something else.

However the rest of the pattern holds, Irisviel and Illya seem the same (aside from Illya's age seeming off by a few years relative to the standard time periods). Kiritsugu seems to be saving the world or something, perhaps from whatever it was the rest of the Einzbern family wanted to do. Shirou somehow gets adopted by the Einzberns, though there is likely no fire. (what about his family?) Rin is still the mage she was before...no word on her family that I recall, but Sakura seems to be a Matou and at least Rin doesn't see her as a sister (though a rival for Shirou, yes). Though, to be honest, Sakura, as far as I can tell, has only had a cameo in one of the Rin vs. Luvia sidestories.

But...there are things in the background that seem to have not been told yet. That is probably why the story is interesting so far. We know sort of what to expect, but then we have no idea what to expect...because it is familiar, but not.

hinode 2012-01-02 21:42

In chapter 16.5, Rin all but states that her mom is a foreigner... which would mean Tokiomi didn't marry Aoi in this particular timeline. The implications of this on Rin and Sakura's backgrounds should be quite significant; we'll see if there's any followup on it later.

Rin also confirms that her parents are still alive, which makes sense given the lighter and softer tone the rest of the manga has taken.

Also, Illya's clone is (nick)named Kuro. Her skin is dark-colored, but not particularly froglike. ;)

Conerning all the discussion...

I wouldn't mind if this got adopted in an anime.
The story and plot has charmed me, and I'm still dieing to see more from it. It's really diferent from F/SN and F/Z, yet I find it even more enjoyable at times.

Still, nothing beats my Lancelot!

But anyways, is there any hint on when they'll get a new chapter up? Tried to check on the scanlator's website and didn't see anything.

I totally support this. 26 episodes would be cool depending on how much material it will end up having. Plus some OVAs. One can dream.

I read chapter 10 of 2wei again and you're right, it doesn't seem like a Holy Grail War has ever taken place in this universe. Rin said the Einzbersn cut all ties with other magi family and that there were only rumors they had a large-scale ritual planned. However, seemingly nothing ever happened and nobody has heard from them in ten years. I think the main difference with the F/SN timeline is that the Einzberns never asked the Makiris and the Tohsakas for help, hence it took them 200 more years to complete the ritual. And right when they were finally ready to start it (or maybe a few moments after they started it)... Kiritsugu slaughtered them.

I don't think the ritual they came up with was all that different from the Holy Grail War we are familiar since Iris did use the word "war" to describe it.

I looked up the raws to 23 too. Definitely looking forward to the scanlators catching up.

An anime would be fun. The pacing would have to be tight because there's a lot of action and not much story. I bet it would be hard on the budget. The first Prisma Ilya could be done in 12 episodes easily.

ReddyRedWolf 2012-01-09 04:12

Wait a new Fate/Kaleid manga thread? Hurrah!

New chp out.

Poor Bazett Luvia did charge the bill. Considering this and Carnival Phantasm Bazett always ends up with odd jobs. Illya, Kuro and Miyu are intimidated to buy by this ice cream seller.

We also get the plausibility Shirou is Miyu's brother. How that works I'm not sure. For what little she revealed she was sent overseas after her father died.

Oh Issei appeared too.
