PC Monitor to watch animes.

I was thinking of maybe getting either the MultiSync or SpectraView from NEC, the ColorEdge or FlexScan from Eizo or the DreamColor from HP.

The size should be at most 24" or 25", the price should not be more than 2,500 dollars.

Which do you guys suggest I get?

According to the source Intel is planning for Higher Resolution Monitor for 2013 if you like it.

What anime source material would possibly benefit from a monitor like this?

Ravenblitz 2012-04-14 20:35

eyegasm... well if he has spare dough why not?

Anime is not worthy of a $2500 pro-grade IPS monitor. :heh: Being 100% AdobeRGB compliant won't really help fansubs, you know.

Dunno, just felt like replacing my 7 years old 17" 4:3 monitor with the latest widescreen and best top notch high-end IPS billion color LED monitor.

But there is so much choices available, I dunno what to pick!

The Dell U2312HM is a pretty good cheap IPS (currently 200$ CAD, I don't know for France).

Or an LG IPS236V, they are cheap.

A good LCD with a tn panel is still pretty good, I have no problem with my new LG W2442PA and my old lg 20.1inch.

Anime isn't color critical. Don't bother with a professional display. A good quality consumer model is more than enough.

Also, to take advantage of the 30bit color/10bit channel support of the monitor for your 30bit color animu, the rest of your setup needs to do 30bit color. Notably, a professional graphics card. FirePro or Quadro. These are expensive pieces of hardware.

Also, software support for 30 bit color is sketchy. For example, Aero hates anything over 24bit color.

Both NEC SpectraView II and HP DreamColor displays are 96% of Adobe RGB I believe. Eizo ColorEdge 98%. So I think that is the best. If you really really feel like spending money.

Both the SpectraView and PA of NEC reproduce 98%, while the DreamColor is 100% Adobe RGB Coverage and 97% DCI-P3, you are correct about the ColorEdge though.

all these monitors have IPS panels and have been generally positive from consumer feedback over on OCN and hardOCP

if you want a max 1080p resolution
-Dell UltraSharp U2312HM

if you want 1920x1200 (all 24")
-Dell UltraSharp U2412M
-Dell UltraSharp U2410
-Asus PA246Q

i have rarely seen any engaging topics (3+ pages of useful info) on NEC and eizo IPS monitors. there is a certain 27" HP IPS widely discussed but it is not the size you are looking for.

I can get the UlstraSharp U2410 for 425€ (555 dollars).

I see that Samsung are going to released a Series 9 IPS LED, would that be worth waiting for instead?

iceyfw 2012-04-14 22:32

only info available is samsung plans to release their series 9 PLS LED starting with a 27". i'm not entirely sure when or if they plan to do a 24" with the same technology the 9 Series uses. PLS panels from samsung seems to be on par with e-IPS but i am not really sure if it'll compete with the higher end IPS panels such as the Dell U2410.

so it's anyones guess if it's worth waiting for a samsung 23"-24" series 9 monitor. but previous product lines samsung previously had (such as their TRUE 120hz monitors) show they will but don't expect it anytime soon.

synaesthetic 2012-04-14 23:52

I have a U2412M and it's awesome. Got it for $330 on Amazon. :D

Dist 2012-04-15 02:27

If you a hardcore gamer, then go ahead, spend 2.5k to a monitor if you have enough money. Although I have to say even $500 cuts it for a good IPS monitor.

But for anime watching only? You won't see a difference between $200 Full HD monitor vs. $2500 3D IPS monitor with '' billion '' colors.

synaesthetic 2012-04-15 02:57

Hardcore gamers would never buy an expensive professional IPS or PVA panel, because the input lag and response time are too high. My U2412M has a response time of 8ms, which is a lot worse than the average TN panel's 2ms. I don't really notice it, but I've had people tell me that they'd never play games on this monitor.

Sides 2012-04-15 06:08

To be fair, no hardcore gamer would use a LCD in the first place, if they have the choice.

If someone is really anal about picture quality and what not, for $5000-6000 you could get the 25" sony picture series OLED, a bit less expensive if you buy a used one. But the real question is this, you can have the best screen in the world but if the source is rubbish it will just amplify the crappiness of the image.

If you just want an affordable IPS that works out of the box, the LGs are pretty good. Most of their IPS screens are supplied calibrated, so you don't need to get one of those spyker display calibration tool, or calibration tools from other manufacturers. Some of those pro IPS have build in sensors for calibration, useful or not that is a personal matter.

spikexp 2012-04-15 08:25

No gamer wouldn't use IPS, but a 120hz display with a good video card to go up to 120fps, now that's how you play.

For watching anime... go ips for the angle of view... that's all there is...

Lawfer 2012-04-15 09:45

Is it better in terms of quality when the contrast ratio is lower or higher? Because I notice the Eizo's all have very low contrast ratio.

If I were to be in the desktop publishing business, taking digital photoediting very seriously on a daily basis, I'll be buying such high-end models... but for watching anime alone? Using them could be overkill that for all-around purposes I'd rather get a good-sized LED monitor at 24" wide.

I think icey's Dell recommends are the best available, although I'm satisfied with my in-law's smaller Samsung monitor.

Anime, movies, tv shows, video gaming... I am using a computer screen like 15 hours a day.

Yes 24" seems the most fitted, the U2410 of Dell is nice, but it's not perfect:

From CNET review:

Quote:

Unfortunately, its RGB presets are marred by dithering when viewing dark gray images and the screen has a slight pink tint. Also, its viewing angles, while good, are not quite up to the standard we expect from IPS monitors. There were very high expectations for this monitor, so if you're looking for perfect performance, keep looking.
