I live in Berkeley. We've been getting tsunami warnings on the EAS encompassing bay area and surrounding counties, so I'm sure SF is as well.

At this point, all coastal counties of California, Oregon, and Washington are in *warning* status. That means anyone in a "tsunami warning zone" should prepare to evacuate.

Those areas have 'reverse 911' systems that call all telephone numbers in a region ... those are starting to fire off now. Also the sirens are starting in various coastal towns.

Keep in mind, we're not necessarily about to see a 'movie level disaster' (though the Japan video is quite, um, impressive)... but many areas will probably evacuate to be on the safe side.

Magnitude has been revised again to 8.8.
The biggest problem at the moment is people commuting to Tokyo not being able to go home since all trains are suspended till safety of tracks can be confirmed.
Fatality is now reported to 19 people.

yup. According to the Nico Nico live video feed, all train stations are closed and everyone is walking back home. And all streets are suffering from traffic jams.

I guess we'll see how community-minded and charitable Tokyo Japanese are these days :)

News radio in Seattle and LA call for tsunami watches while the papers call for warnings, go fig.

You should see the reporter doing live report during the earth quake in his own office.
You can hear people shouting evacuate under your desk while the reporter(and camera man) calmly doing live reporting every move.:twitch:

That man deserves a medal for having the balls to toughen out something as destructive as that and doing his job to the best of his ability all the way through. THAT's dedication right there.

If there is one thing about Japanese casters, they are always calm cool and collected, with all even tone and clinical style.

Watching Hawaii TV news, yup full on evacuations are being called for. Gonna shut down Honolulu international and all auxillary airports soon.

Just felt another minor aftershock while sitting here. This earthquake was seriously bad - worst one to hit Japan in 300 years. Lots of people dead, fires, flooding, etc. The tsunami did most of the damage.

Please keep those in the north of Japan in your thoughts. Japan is one of the most prepared countries in the world when it comes to earthquakes, but against one this size there isn't a whole lot you can do except hope for the best.

There has always been a philosophy amongst economy watchers (traders, economic analysts, financiers) that when political shit hits the fan, Mother Nature gets mad.

A few months ago was NZ. Now is Japan. Maybe we should start tying politicians to burning stakes when they get too uppity and start fighting like kids.

Now the quake affects Tokyo, I was wondering how people there are going to react : lets see if the social glue within Japan is still there as it was in the 1960s and 1970s.

How many people reported injured or killed by the disaster?

Injured are coming in by the hundreds I believe another hundred reported missing.
