The pacing was extremely awkward in this episode. It felt very rushed. Kotomine's character development was also rushed. It was a critical time for Kirei, but I don't think they showed enough of it, which is a little bit disappointing. Parts of the animation was very well done, while others took a toll. Overall, I'm iffy about this episode.

I will have to reread this portion of the novel.

And so Tokiomi goes bye-bye from the game, but I didn't feel a damn thing about him like I did for poor Lancer or Kayneth, I didn't help I feel the episode rushed many things.

DakkerDB 2012-04-28 11:13

And there we have it, folks. The Kotomine Kirei that we all know and love is back! Or, should I say, reveals himself?

While, yes, it did seem ever so slightly rushed, I'm still quite giddy about what happened. I believe from this point onward, the Holy Grail War will be quite a bit more entertaining, with Kirei and Archer taking a more active role in the conflict. At least, that's the impression I was left with by this episode.

Still, by the look of all things, next episode is going to be something different. We even got an unusual preview. Looking forward to it.

Agreed, I hope that the blu-ray version of the ep has much more scenes/extensions that may fix the awkward pacing they had here...

Saber riding away on her V-Max gift. Was a nice scene..
Oh and Kirei's smile before he went in to kill Tokiomi, what a lovely smile.

Tokiomi's face when he got stabbed...definitely not the shocked face I saw coming, I guess the staff had fun with that part or something.

Next ep. the reactions people will have to it, oh man I can't wait to see it now...

This week's episode shall be summed up as "Trolling is a art."

Archer 2012-04-28 11:21

There are several parts in this episode that seemed to "jump around" with unusual scene transitions. The best example of this would be the conversation with Kirei and Gilgamesh after the meeting with the Einzberns where the Gilgamesh moving around felt extremely jarring, as if an entire scene was cut out in between.

A good time as any to preorder those blu-rays, eh?

Honestly when Gilgamesh keep going to spirit form and back, I was slightly amused by that. The staff must've been bored or something. :heh:

Horse 2012-04-28 11:26

Rushed? I don't think so. I don't know if I could take Gilgamesh and Kotomine talk about the same damn thing ("What is it that you seek?") any more.

Also that dialogue in the middle was pretty horrible.

Gil: "Come to think of it there is one master without a servant";
Kirei: "But is that man worthy in the eyes of the King of Heroes?"

Bleh. This is not witty dialogue.

Edit: And of course now that the show could pick up the pace with a new determined Master they are going for an Anime Original Intermission. Great show structure there, ufotable.

While I obviously won't talk about it, the next episode is not anime original. At all.

Argh, I thought Tokiomi would go out next episode.

Really, I agree with everyone, this episode had a lot of weird scene transitions. Hopefully it will get fixed on blu ray.

sento 2012-04-28 11:48

The only part that was really shortened and didn't transmitted the same mood as in the novel was Tokiomi and Rin scene, because the lack of his internal monologue and true feelings.

I not agree with the weird scene transitions talk and previous episode was more "rushed" than this one, is just that this episode was Ufotable Tokushima going experimental and playing around with stuff (like Gil jumping around in spirit form).

I found it better than the stuff we got on previous Kirei and Gilgamesh talks.

Well the next episode was merely a prelude in the fourth novel, not an actual chapter.

Really, I'm gonna say that Gen Urobuchi wrote Fate/Zero with almost zero consideration for an anime adaptation. He just wrote how he likes it at that time and the story works well for light novels but very problematic when it adapted to an anime. Like Nasu (IIRC) said, the three volumes are merely warm-up of Gen Urobuchi for the fourth novel, where we are currently at now.

That's why I don't fully blame ufotable for all the flaws and pacing issues in the show.

Well, for the episode I love the camera movement when Kirei stabbed Tokiomi. Clearly longer scenes will be in the blu-ray box.

Yeah, Tokiomi death was pretty well made.

Lots of Kara no Kyoukai vibes there.

That's about as experimental as walking in circles. ;)

But actually funny and fitting to Gilgamesh antics.

Walking in circles was just Aoki Ei wild idea.

The next episode looks interesting. Maybe it's because I'm a kiritsugu fanboy.

ookamigirl 2012-04-28 12:57

This was a pretty relaxing episode.
Irisviel it the grail?! That was a surprise.
Gilgamesh is the only servant who is always actively scheming something.
Kirei sure is a bastard like none other.

Go watch ep12 again, there were plenty of foreshadowing about it.
