Anime with shapeshifting?

Are there any anime with people who can shapeshift? I'm leaning more towards people who can shapeshift into animals. Not people who can become vampires. Anyone have some recommendations?

Wolf's Rain count? Not sure, been at least 5 years since I last watched that on TV (hah).

Claymore maybe?

Hard to think of any anime with shapeshifting..

Fullmetal Alchemist of course.

Ranma 1/2 might count.

Soul Eater has shape-shifting into weapons. And I guess the witches shape shift into animals.

That's all I can think of that I've seen. I'm sure there are others.

Legend of Crystania feature lots of shapeshifters.

Spice and Wolf has Horo who shifts between wolf and human forms.

If you don't mind 'monsters' in place of animals, along with a heavy dose of dark-ish SciFi mumbo jumbo, Guyver (2005) would fit the bill perfectly.

@Cryonosis: While Spice & Wolf is a very fine piece of anime, it really shouldn't be recommended to anyone who is looking for a shapeshifting theme, considering you don't even need all the fingers from one hand to count all the times it happens in the series :)

Yeah i'd recommend that, along with the early 90s OVA series, which is such a classic.

To whoever says that Fullmetal Alchemist doesn't have shapeshifting. It does. Envy shapeshifts. Sometimes even into animals. He can take any form he wants. He's the most basic definition of a shapeshifter.

There are also other less powerful shapeshifters too.

I recall Outlaw Star having a few characters that could take on animal form. Ashia Clan Clan is one character from that series that had a cat/humanoid hybrid from but can change into a full on tiger.

I do not know about Betterman. It has characters that change into monsterous forms and one that changes from a bird into a humanoid form. But this is done by eating seeds made up of humans.

I second FMA

But...I still don't quite understand what gender Envy is.....holy crap

Xam'd lost memories.

Natsume Yuujinchou has a shape-shifting demon named Nyanko-sensei. His usual form is a "lucky cat," but his real form is an enormous wolf-like beast.

EDIT: I can't believe no one mentioned Fruits Basket.

male. -_-"

in Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha there's some who turns into animals.

Marcus H. 2010-05-20 09:15

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Ranma 1/2?

gloh79 2010-05-20 09:54

Guyver has people shape shifting into monsters...

Haladflire65 2010-05-20 19:22

What about Fruits Basket? There's a whole lot of shapeshifting going on there.

NoLongerSane 2010-05-20 19:58

I would say that Elemental Gelade has characters that change, but their changes are to being weapons. Also, second on Xam'd lost memories.

Odd recommendation of the day : Oh! Edo Rocket.

Medieval japanese firework artisan trying to send a rocket to the moon FTW

The female lead is a shapeshifting monster, but I am not sure it is what you are looking for. It's an excellent, but weird comedy.

coren 2010-05-20 21:23

Daa! Daa! Daa! has a shapeshifting 'babysitter pet' as one of the main characters.

and really cute in both forms! Her puzzled expressions in the non-human form are especially appealing. Her human form is sixth from the left in the gallery below.

Eisdrache 2010-05-21 05:38

Yes, FMA and Nanoha have shape shifters. In FMA it happens like 5 times in total over 63 episodes and in Nanoha it's about the same number over all 3 seasons. You don't watch those shows for shape shifting but for other reasons.

That said I recommend Wolf's Rain (Humans -> wolves), Erementar Gerard (People -> weapons) and Claymore (Humans -> monsters).
