Tetsuwan Birdy [2008 remake by Kazuki Akane, Hiroshi Ohnogi etc]
Airing in the summer of '08, an original storyline based off the Tetsuwan Birdy characters. It will be running for 13 episodes according to Moonphase
The site is apparently http://www.birdy-tv.com/ but it doesn't work for me (yet) It'll be directed by Kazuki Akane (Escaflowne, Heat Guy J, Noein) and the character designs are by Ryochimo (who is awesome, see dock battle in Noein #12 and much much much more). The chief storywriter is Hiroshi Ohnogi (Gundam Seed, Aquarion, Noein, what else...) and the creative producer is Yutaka Izubuchi (tons of design work, RahXephon director) With this staff you'd expect the production studio to be Satelight, but nope - it's A-1 Pictures, team behind Ookiku Furikabatte etc. There is one picture of the character designs here. Whee. You know, I probably won't feel inclined to watch this if it wasn't for the promise of good animators coming along (and me looking forward a bit to see what Akane's directing after Noein) but it also helps if it's short. I never watched the original, but I'm sure some folks here have. |
hunh.
Odd to see Akane directing something outside of Satelight... |
Hrm, so it isn't an adaptation of the manga but an original story. Kind of a disappointing in some regards but nice that'll be new material. I'm there on day one, I'm a huge Birdy the Mighty fan.

Finally! Birdie will have a remake!
Her old looks will be modified ala Dirty Pair to Dirty Pair Flash. |

Anyway I rented the first two eps on VHS way back when I was a naive little anime teen and liked it so I will definitely follow this.:) Never saw how it ended because the store only had the first tape.:( |

I just watched the first episode of the OVA. It's pretty good, can't wait to see the TV series.
BTW the art on the official site is beautiful. Can anyone translate who the artist is? This looks also pretty nice http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/3...sbirgc0.th.jpg Edit: just finished watching the original. Spoiler:
|
The art on the official site is by Ryochimo, the character designer. He did the colouring as well. I'd translate who did that magazine hanken except that it's too small for me to make it out.
|
I did not noticed the scan was this small... ^^
It's by Ryo chimo (no surprise here) http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/8...ythenk2.th.jpg |
The original OVA story was never completed because the original manga was never completed. The original manga only collected one tankouban then was put on the shelf while Masami Yuuki was working on Kyukoku Chojin R.
He restarted up the manga back in 2003 and has aimed the story to be a lot more ambitious this time around. I really enjoy it myself although it's a bit slow at times. It deals with a lot more stuff though. It's up to 17 Tankouban too. I was kind of disappointed that the TV series was only going to be 13 episodes and is an original story based off the current manga rather than an adaptation of it, but oh well. No birdy at all would be a lot worse. |
I'm glad it's at least more than just what the OVA showed. Is the manga scanlated or released in English? I'd like to read what happens after the OVA.
|
A bit of the new manga has been scanlated I think, I'm not quite sure. I own the tankoubans myself.
The new manga acts as a reboot for the series and changes a number of things, including a few designs. It also expands on a lot like Birdy's past. Gomez is a real badass in the manga. |
Seems like there's only 8 chapters scanlated. I found 17 raw volumes though. Might as well check that out.

Finnally a remake of something I like... Though let's see if it can live up to the great 4 episode ova :P
|
Oooh! I remember this! It aired here during the waning days of a nice channel for watching anime. I didn't find it particularly special, but it was a surprising blast from the past too see this picture. I don't recall ever finishing the four episodes, but I'm sure I watched at least two.
If I find the time, I'll probably download the OVAs to feel a bit nostalgic (about what, 5-6 years ago >_>). |
The source material is somewhat out of the left field, but seeing the perennial Izubuchi+Oonogi duo is not surprising.
After the immensely sattisfying revival of Skull Man and To Terra last year under the wise guidance of these two, I can only say that I will be watching this religiously. All I can add right now is that Chiaki J. Konaka better write an episode or two for this one as well. |
Whoohoo! Chiba Saeko confirmed to be playing Birdy! (see homepage) Now I'm definitely watching this.
|
Waaa? No Kotono Mitsuishi? It just won't be the same =(
|
She hasn't been playing many roles recently, so I guess it was just to be expected. I never watched the original Japanese version anyways, and I love Chiba Saeko, so I really don't mind (though I like Kotono Mitsuishi, too).
