Was it only my pc or did everyone have problems logging on to the forum for the past 2 days?

yeah they were upgrading the software i think

*cough* yeah...some big upgrade that went wrong ;)

It was just a server software update gone wrong... It's all fine now.

Mb81 can explain this in more detail if he wants to, but basically he was applying
some patches to the kernel (=core unix component) which went wrong. This meant
that the server wasn't booting anymore, and unfortunately Mb81 doesn't have direct
access to it. So he had to wait on the people in the datacenter to fix it.

FYI, this problem affected:

* animesuki.com (until it was redirected to a mirror on Saturday)
* forums.animesuki.com

And all of Mb81's sites, such as:
* animemanga.de
* dragonballz.de
* (insert-anime-name-here).de

Hehe... he should've used old config and do make oldconfig...oh well

And he could do this how, when the system wasn't booting, and he lacked physical access? Read the whole post. :rolleyes:

i suppose that the datacenter takes backups? or is the forum/site waiting to crash and be un-recoverable? if so, it might be a good idea to take tape backups or mirror HD's (i don't know how unless you have access to the hardware, over a vpn would take years...) my servers would be up and running within an hour if they decided to quit and not boot.

I ment when compiling kernel he could take old config as base...that way it would atleast boot and would have NIC drivers :heh:

I update my kernels remotely quite often. My guess would be that lilo may have been forgotten to be run. grub is much nicer in that it doesn't need to be run every time you install a new kernel.

Looks like animesuki has been busy late moving/updating according to netcraft.
