Ero in Visual Novels: Aye or Nay?

A pretty straightforward poll/question. List your reasons here!

DragoonKain3 2009-09-27 02:13

Choose aye because if there's any medium that can do ero justice, it would be visual novels. But hey, what do I know? I only played english translated ones.

Mueti 2009-09-27 03:00

I don't mind it but don't really care for it either. Most VNs could do without it. There are a few exceptions though, where it actually does contribute to the story or the atmosphere, so I voted aye.

Jze0 2009-09-27 03:17

Is there a middle option cuz to be honest I don't mind if a game has ero or not. Well... maybe it depends on the game but if I had to choose I'd probably pick nay only because it feels awkward to play through some of those scenes.

Akeii 2009-09-27 04:09

Sorry about the middle option... yes or no only. ;)
Hey, if you play a visual novel it'll either have ero or it won't, right?

2H-Dragon 2009-09-27 04:24

Voted no, because most of the ero in the good VN it's just trown in the end, not really contributing to anything. But if it flows well with the story why not?

Jaden 2009-09-27 06:35

In a word: yes. It's one of the reasons why I wouldn't just read a book instead.

Still, it's only spice and the selling point is always the story.

Out of place ero on visual novels = nay.
Ero which is vital in the visual novel = aye.

But I would vote for aye, since it's boring to enter-spam if you're just like reading a book.

Tiberium Wolf 2009-09-27 08:33

I don't vote in any of the options because having or not having H content will depend of the VN story. Besides it's like having H content hurts the VN. What counts is the story. I suppose ppl read VN for the story right?

This .
Fundamentally i feel that playing a VN is rather close to reading a book . Its an e-book of sorts just interactive in a way (i guess ? click click click ? :heh:) and has pretty graphics to look at instead of just plain old text .

As for the ero content in VN's , some books while of course not in as much detail as in VN's have sex in them too . So as long as it actually fits into the story and isn't just tacked on to be a selling point of the game then i don't see whats wrong with it .

I'm guessing this result (of Aye 13, Nay 3) can serve as good evidence on people being naturally "ero".

Joking aside, the "ero" part would increase market sales and therefore would result into more anime productions---that is why it should be yes.

Morality-wise it won't harm(IMO)---people would always find ways of "entertainment".

So for the economy, starving children, and progress of anime, and, "honestly", not my own "indulgences", I vote yes.

Eater of All 2009-09-27 12:32

Since the current status quo is that there is ero in visual novels, I really doubt many people would vote nay since it'll technically involve alot of economy shift and whatnot. If you are asking this question with a "preference" sort of connotation though, which I'm going to assume that is the case, then I vote nay. I don't abhor the existence of ero or anything, and I sure am fine with others enjoying it if it's relevent to the story, but I reckon implied sex scenes (like in Ever17 or Clannad) can work just as well as visually showing it too. The meat of visual novels, like others have mentioned, is mainly its story, complemented by good music and crisp visuals. Ero is really just an extra to increase sells, and I can personally do without it.

Micchi 2009-09-27 13:24

As others have mentioned, many eroge would be just fine without the ero scenes. However, personally I view the scenes as a culmination of a growing relationship that you get to view from beginning to end. That being said, sometimes the scenes do feel like they're just 'thrown in' for the sake of adding ero content (most noticeably key's works and other naki-ge). There are many times when it fits very well with the story though.

Currently I'm playing Suzunone Seven and what happens in one of the ero scenes is used as a plot device. Not all ero scenes are just about the ero. In the end, I didn't vote for either because it really depends on the situation and how well they are incorporated into the game. I wouldn't mind it not being there, but if it's there and it doesn't seem too out of place, I won't be complaining.

chikorita157 2009-09-27 13:37

From the first sight of ero in Kanon, the story would do alot better without these scenes since they are really meant for a buying point of having it. Some may work with it, but most wouldn't since they don't make sense.

I vote nay.

I don't think so. We're not kids anymore.

u43368 2009-09-27 14:38

Not really, unless they actually fit in with the plot like Saya no Uta... or involve mollusks.

kyosak 2009-09-27 18:18

Sort of indifferent about the whole thing but I find most ero scenes ridiculously boring and pointless. If you wanna fap to something go download some porn???

I guess it depends on the VN. Some prioritize ero content over the story and vice versa... I'm not gonna criticize someone for wanting their "2D fix" but there are times when I really wish ero scenes would stay out of certain games. Everybody's always talking about Key games and their out of place ero scenes but I've been playing Fate/stay night recently and that game had me cracking up for 10 minutes when I got to the lame excuse that lead up to it's first ero scene, lol.

When did people start playing ero-games to prove that they're "not kids anymore"? Sure, in the context of a pure romance story, perhaps showing the scene would evoke a more powerful emotion, but I'd be pretty dismal if a game like Clannad suddenly busts out an H-scene and totally ruin the atmosphere.

Then again, that might be just my preference.

HayashiTakara 2009-09-28 00:42

Aye, porn is always good, its a shame to deny your baser instincts :heh:

Wrath88 2009-09-28 01:25

I think Micchi and the rest of the VN blogger group might go with the 'In the middle', except Hemi, probably. He'll jump at the chance to see ero scenes with any bishoujo he likes.

For the record, while I don't really see a need for H in some of the ones I play, I'd still want it anyway.
