Best Albums of 2007.

So far it's been a pretty good year and it's not over yet!

Spoiler for My list of favs this year.:

stpehen 2007-07-25 16:17

It hasn't been totally great IMO so far: Modest Mouse and Arcade Fire albums were pretty weak, as far as the big names go... but I'm liking the upcoming Animal Collective album (Strawberry Jam) a whole lot.

Deerhoof, Battles, Menomena... those albums have been getting most of my play so far this year.

Tommy 2007-07-25 17:41

I would say that a lot of artists new albums this year failed to live up to some of their previous works, like MM, AF, The National, and The Figurines of the top of my head but I still found most of them to be enjoyable.

I still gotta give the new Battles and The New Pornographers a listen along with a list of stuff.

The new Shins album is excellent. I'm also a big fan of the new The New Pornographers, Interpol, Arcade Fire, and White Stripes albums.

I'm a huge Wilco fan! I'll have to look through my music to compile a list

I heard that Bright Eye's Cassadaga fell below expectations. Still thought it was a solid album though.

Thats actually good news to me since Cassadaga is the first album of theirs that I've heard and I thought it was great.

The albums I liked from them most were Fevers and Mirrors and Lifted.

Their best album to date seems to be I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning.

My favorite so far is most probably World's End Girlfriend - Hurtbreak Wonderland. Other than that I found almost none of the albums this year of artists I've listened to before especially great. e.g. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank wasn't anywhere close to Modest Mouse's earlier works imo. It's similiar for Wilco, Explosions in the Sky, Do Make Say Think, Björk, NIN, Dark Tranquillity, Bright Eyes etc. I'm not saying that they're bad either, it's just that all of those artists made at least one much better album before imo.
But there's still stuff I have yet to check out as well, I'm holding high hopes for the new 65daysofstatic. ^^

Ah, yeah, there were two more awesome albums this year so far. Crippled Black Phoenix - A Love of Shared Disasters and Tocotronic - Kapitulation. I also enjoyed the new Melt-Banana and Boris with Michio Kurihara - Rainbow.

Can't wait to listen to them. I also listened to The New Pornographers new album Challengers today and thought it was pretty damn good.

Mueti 2007-07-28 04:20

I concur with I'm Wide Awake It's Morning Being Bright Eyes' best album.

And now that I've listened to it I can say that I ain't disappointed with 65daysofstatic's newest work. The Destruction of Small Ideas is pretty great, comes close to The Fall of Math even.

edit: Oh damn, Tocotronic is just so awesome. Kapitulation may just be my favorite German album ever. Usually I'm the first to criticize German text, but those lyrics aren't just great....they're godly and beyond.

Tommy 2007-07-28 14:46

Well I guess you can chalk up another disappointment this year for Sunset Rubdown's new album Random Spirit Lover, I did enjoy it but it wasn't near as good as last years Shut Up am I Dreaming.

Morcheeba's Deep Diver more then made up for it though, It's amazing. Morcheeba + Thomas Dybdahl =:bow::bow::bow::bow::bow::bow:. It was also a nice surprise to hear Cool Calm Pete on a track.

Sharkey and C-Ray Waltz was also awesome, it's easily the best rap album I've heard since Lupe Fiasco.

Mueti 2007-07-28 15:57

Ah, I didn't even know Morcheeba were going to release a new album. Definitely getting it once it's out.

I didn't like the latest 65dos. They have yet to put together a really sharp and excellent recording that takes advantage of their sound - in fact this is easily the weakest-sounding of their albums - and the writing got more ponderous and boring.

I agree with that. While having made a few Songs that fully did that they have yet to create such an album. But I still like their newest one very much. It's no masterpiece but still a pretty good album imo.

Oh yeah, since no one else will have heard of this, I have to put in a shout out for the upcoming Pygmy Lush - Bitter River album... The CD is not yet out but I heard the cassette version. Sounds like Tom Waits and Jesus Lizard flailing around all over the place: noisy, acoustic, aggressive, lethargic, just everything wrapped in one with tons of personality.

Heh, my current most played is Susanna's Sonata Mix Dwarf Cosmos... but that's probably just the flavor of the week. Too be honest, most of the big name albums of the year were pretty average, specially Willco's.

Tommy 2007-08-04 01:37

Has anyone listened to Feist's new album "The Reminder"?

nanafan 2007-08-04 11:59

the cds i listen to most are bethany dillon imagination, barlow girl another journal entry, barlow girl how can we be silent, yui cant buy my love, crystal kay all yours.

Tommy 2007-08-05 15:39

I just listened to Switches - Heart turned to D.E.A.D. and It's pretty sweet.
