Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture (TV)
Got news that GITS Arise will have a TV show in Japan this Spring. Not enough info to determine if it's a recut on the OVAs or what, but Production IG is going to be involved.
Ghost in the Shell Arise TV Anime Announced for Spring This info was released as part of the 25th anniversary of the franchise's establishment. |

http://kokaku-a.jp/tv/index.html So this is it, Ghost in the Shell ARISE ALTERNATIVE ARCHITECTURE. Best as I can tell, it's a re-edit of the ARISE movies with two new episodes to bridge the gap between Arise and the upcoming new movie later this year. Teaser video, for what it's worth: |

Lots of action in 1st episode. Standard issues with hacking. It just doesn't feel right without Kusanagi.. Don't get me wrong, it's good, but just feel like watching it anymore. Skipping it. |
I'm surprised they used the fourth OVA as a basis.
|
If they're starting from the fourth OVA then hopefully this means that most of the series will be new material. Which sounds better than what I'd originally expected. If they're starting from the fourth, it would seem a bit pointless to go back from there, so going forward seems more likely to me.
Ah well, couldn't have been more wrong, looks like they are doing the OVAs out of order after all.. |
I actually never got round to watching the fourth OVA (Watched the first three). Should I just start watching this instead of the fourth OVA then?

And I feel like I must warn anyone who has not watched the OVA's yet that they are horrible. I watched all of them because I love GITS but it was a huge waste of time. |
The OVA's were....okay. They just weren't up to the standard we've come to expect from the franchise. Comparing just Stand Alone to Arise, Arise is simply not on the same level of storytelling.
|
I liked the OVAS but is that all this is?
Otherwise, forget it. Make a series with new episodes GITS then I'll be interested. |

Sigh this just seems so lazy like Break Blade tv
|
Wow, this was like leaping back in time to 2002. Of all the franchises out there to get continual revivals, GITS always seems to be treated with integrity.
|
From the looks of thing, they're flipping it around and starting the next one with the 1st OVA...

Arise's issue is that the premise is good in theory but falls apart in practice. The beginnings of Section 9. The failing is that the way the characters are reimagined doesn't sit well with me. I don't feel they've really delved as deep as they possibly could both character and story-wise.
It could very well be that they were trying to do to GITS the same thing that Casino Royale did for the James Bond franchise: try to introduce decently skilled but not fully developed versions of the characters who eventually grow into the roles we've become familiar with. But frankly it's...not quite doing that. At least not very well. I appreciate this version of Motoko is less experienced than the one we're familiar with from the movies and GITS:SAC, she's getting most of the character focus but not the rest. And I'm also not too happy with how most of the characters got dragged into each other in the first two ARISE OVAs. With the exception of Pazu--he's the one who I think was written in believably in the first OVA--Adding Batou and Togusa felt tacked on. Same in the 2nd ova, Ishikawa and Boma also felt forced. Has anyone here watched or read Mardock Scramble? Same screenwriter: Tow Ubukata, who also wrote Heroic Age and Sokyuu No Fafner. I've always felt Ubukata was a hit or miss writer; To be honest I've only watched the Fafner TV series and thought there's bits of it that TV series that were good but also bits that were plain old awful, so it's more that his delivery is inconsistent. Is this a common thing with stuff he's worked on? |
