Dark mystery with psychological/philosophical undertones
 

I'm looking for anime with the above qualities. As for something to compare it to, I really enjoyed all the stories in Aoi Bungaku, and Paranoia Agent was okay as well (Save for the ending, ugh). Maybe something like Death Note or Higurashi, but focused less on the entertainment aspect.

It doesn't have to be mystery, but I'd like it to be "dark" if you know what I mean. Horror is good too.

And not Monster, one of the worst shows I've ever seen.

Akira or Ghost in the Shell, I guess.

I strongly, strongly recommend Ghost Hound. Very creepy, thoroughly psychological and generally superb.

Yeah. That anime is truly fascinating. The characters are also likable. =D

Anyway, I can only think of Ergo Proxy right now. Its slow paced but it gets better.

You should try Kara no Kyoukai. I think you can find all those characteristics in it and it's just an amazing anime overall.

How about the last arc of 'Ayakashi - Japanese Classic Horror Stories' and 'Mononoke'? No one beats the medicine seller! My usual rec btw... :-)

I would definitely have to recommend Kara no Kyoukai.

You should also try Kuroshitsuji, it's drama/fantasy/mystery and it was quite a good show.

Ghost in the Shell (the 1995 movie)

if you don't mind reading light novels, I would suggest Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria (thread at AS), which is currently translated at B-T. it fits quite well into the Dark Mystery + Psychological/Philosophical thing you are looking for. a pretty good and enjoyable read if I can say so myself.

Boogiepop Phantom and Paranoia Agent are well-known older shows that fit your request. More recently we have the excellent, though sometimes rather talky, Mouryou no Hako.

Monster is a great thriller too.
