In search of a great psychological thriller
As the title states, I'm looking for an engaging psychological thriller , one that really skirts the boundaries of moral ambiguity and leaves the watcher guessing. I was thinking of something along the lines of Naoki Urasawa's 'Monster' , or perhaps something more of a sci-fi Dystopia/Utopia such as 'Ergo Proxy' or my personal favorite 'Ghost In the Shell : Stand Alone Complex' . Any suggestions are very much appreciated. Thank you for your time ^^ .

'Perfect Blue' fits the thriller category, I enjoyed it quite a bit.
|
Serial Experiments Lain
and Madlax The ending of School Days. |
I can't help but recommend Death Note. :p
|
Haruhi Suzumiya. (Will she do it? Is she a goddess?)
|
Perfect blue, Paranoia Agent.
|
Second Paranoia Agent, and I would strong recommend Ghost Hound.
|
Higurashi no Naku Kara ni. I'm slowly watching it now. blows my mind.

you should definitely watch Bokurano. yes, it has the moral ambiguity + psychological thriller you are looking for.
if you don't mind reading manga, you might want to read Pluto by TEZUKA Osamu and URASAWA Naoki (who did Monster). by the way, does Liar Game count??? it has the "keeps you guessing" thing. |
Ah, thank you all for your recommendations ^_^ . I have seen both Death Note and Paranoia Agent, and enjoyed them immensely . I am currently reading 'Pluto' , on the second volume now. Never heard of 'Perfect Blue' , 'Ghost Hound', or 'Bokurano' , I'll be sure to take a look at 'em . As for Serial Experiments and the others listed, I've probably seen parts of them at some point, perhaps I'll give them another go.

I'd add Denpa Teki na Kanojo to that.
|
Liar Game would be a non-violent example.
Death Note, if you haven't seen it yet, that is. |
I detect low levels of Higurashi in this thread...the yanderes put me off but it's definitely your kind of thing.
|
Go with Ghost Hunt It's a bit childesh in the sences that the story line can be boring and repetive ounce in a while, but a few of the eps still scare me. especily the one called 'Blood Staind Labirynth'.
I hated the ending to the Anime though. It seemed like the wrighters ran out of ideas so they just threw in one big totaly random action scene. |
20th Century Boys, perhaps? It's a manga, but it's by Naoki Urasawa. Something like Monster meets science fiction. I think you'd love this.
|
Monster is a masterpiece of anime thriller, you should watch it!
I'm searching these kind of animes too, but everything I watched weren't as great as Monster... |
I'll add Boogiepop Phantom to the list.
|
+1 to Higurashi no Naku Kara ni also adding Higurashi no Naku Kara ni kai and Umineko no Naku Koro ni to the list (although i do think it was a let down compared to Higurashi)
