I find it much more upbeat than the early parts of Kimi ni Todoke where a similar situation was portrayed much more realistically, including the resultant psychological issues.

Remember one of the major differences between Japanese and American high schools -- in the US you might share classes with a hundred or more people in the course of a day, so even if you're the weirdest misfit, there's a good chance you can find a kindred spirit -- and that person will likely have other friends in other classes that he can introduce you to at lunch. But in Japan, you're pretty much stuck in one class with the same 30 students all day -- if you're a weirdo, you're probably going to be the only one in class. And if you don't join a club, you have little chance to socialize with anyone else in the school.
