TBH, I haven't really listened to too many J-Jazz bands, but Soil and "PIMP" Sessions is my favorite J-Jazz band. I love a lot of the energy that they put in their songs.

I listen simply to jazz. I'm not sure that "j-jazz" has its own elements unique to itself that it becomes its own idiom the way latin jazz, smooth jazz, jazz fusion, and bebop jazz are. From what I see, Japanese jazz artists are doing jazz same as they do in Europe and in America. Much like the American concept of limited government yielding to the freedom of the individual, jazz might have its roots in America but isn't bound to a particular nation or region. Hence, "j-jazz" exists in as much as Canadian jazz does, which is to say not really.

The wonderful Hiromi Uehara

Kei Akagi (an American of Japanese ancestry)

Akira Jimbo

Tetsuo Sakurai

Just so happens that I have been listening to some Japanese nu-jazz this past week. A couple examples:

Soil & "Pimp" Sessions is very much worth looking into.
Dynamic tag cannot be rendered. (PrintableThread)
J.A.M is a side-project of some Soil & Pimp members. "Club jazz", one could say.

Indigo jam unit is another great one.

I'm currently getting into Jabberloop. They are amazing.

Sleep Walker is different from the above bands. It's more acid jazz.

Also, can't forget the oldies. Something from the mid-70's.

I'm not sure what is distinctively "Japanese" abou the aforementioned bands. I guess when it comes to Soil & "Pimp" Sessions, it's the high energy. They have dubbed their jazz "death jazz". As for the rest, well. Jabberloop, indigo jam unit and J.A.M are just so relaxed. I really like the term "club jazz". Sleep Walker is something else, entirely.

Oh boy, a conversation about J-Jazz but no Keiko Matsui!?

I love this one the most, it just has this .. epic feel to it. I discovered her music, oh, 7 or 8 years ago? It's just so atmospheric.

And this is probably her most well known piece.

Pe'z is another great jazz act from Japan. They call themselves "The Samurai Jazz Band", whatever that means :D Like Soil & "Pimp" Sessions, their music is quite energetic.

This is a "tame" track from them.

I very much recommend their "Funny Day & Hard Night" album.

Some really great finds here. :)

I just have to bump this thread since I found a track more indicative Pe'z's style.

Its real nice to see so much appreciation for J-Jazz XD. Well allow me to pitch in some of my suggestions.

Ootaku Kaoruko: He does the Bartender OST, which is definitely worth checking out, its Bar Jazz but its very good, has a very atmospheric property to it XD

(Cosmopolitan) One of the tracks

Mondo Grosso: Can't tell you guys too much about them since i have only heard a few songs of theirs but they are consistently good. They do have a more bossa nova style to them though.

(Song: Life ft Bird)

Quasimode: A friend told me about them, an i got to say they deliver such great vibes through their music, i was an instant fan.

(Song: Finger Tip)

Well that's all i can think of from the top of my head, but if anyone has any good suggestions feel free to vm me, id appreciate it
